  1. A recipe for misery if ever I heard one.
  2. Programming books tend to become obsolete fairly quickly (even C and C++ have evolved in recent years). But if you're got any which are still quite current, you might be able to give them away, or put them on ebay for a small price.
  3. Eating in restaurants and cafes. Sounds really terrible. What sort of a sad loser would spend their weekends and evenings doing such things?
  4. I think it's a generation thing. Chatting with our neighbours parents the other day... they thought it was hilarious that we were going out for breakfast. "Don't you have a toaster at home?", etc.

It is not used. jlee said - "any public or private space which is used and adore by the community should not come under the developers wrecking ball". I don't I misinterpreted anything! The car park is not used (in fact it is semi-derelict), so it will be nice to see it put to good use. But while studios and workshops are all well and good.. nashoi's idea is even better.

Not sure about Brockley, but 15-20 years ago, Herne Hill was definitely more expensive/desirable than ED. From my memory... around 96-97, ED was a bit unloved and scruffy (but not 'crap'). By 2001 it was on the up and was quite an appealing place to move to - but still pretty cheap. EDT, Franklins, Blue Mountain, etc had sowed the seeds of what was to come. As well as a couple of gems that sadly didn't make it... Jerk Rock, Magdala, and the enigmatic International Cocktail Bar.
  7. Have you ever even read Time Out? AJ Farmers... FFS..
  8. I remember coming to ED 20 years ago - a mate lived in a student house round here. It was fine, and had the basic ameneties you'd need, but honestly... it was basically the cheapest place within striking distance of central London, that wasn't a complete crap-hole.
  9. Cut four large squares out of a sturdy cardboard box (slightly larger than the record). Sandwich the LP with two cardboard squares either side and stick together with parcel tape. Write "fragile" / "do not bend" / etc in large letters. And hope for the best.
  10. Whoever wrote that has probably never been to ED, they've just working from instagram pics.
  11. Yep. Thought I'd get the overground and pick up the Hammersmith & City at Whitechapel... and there was a 20 minute wait! (it's not only us SE Londoners who have to put up with an infrequent service).
  12. Not really the WBA title though, is it?
  13. In the following order: Alka Seltzer 2 x paracetamol and 2 x ibuprofen, washed down with a pint of water Bacon sandwich (condiments optional), washed down with full-fat coke or coffee with sugar Shower Long walk/plenty of fresh air Watch something mindless on Netflix

  15. I really don't think the OKR bakerloo line will help ED much. Sitting on a bus for half an hour to get to Old Kent Rd? No thanks! If/when the every-10-minute service to London Bridge is reinstated - along with the Charing Cross interchange - I'll be happy. Ideally with some increased reliability and less weekend closures. More carriages on the Thameslink trains would be my next priority after that. I like the suggestion of removing some of the seats in the trains - making the carriages more like the overground ones. And we need more things to hold onto. You could always have a couple of fully seated carriages at the rear for passengers with longer journeys.
  16. Kel, building something different to the approved plans would indeed be a serious matter, I agree. Still don't agree with the "overdevelopment" argument though...

  18. first mate, you seem to be talking about two different issues. 1) Deliveries, manouvering space for delivery trucks, opening hours, noise - and 2) number of residential units. I don't see how 1 and 2 are related. The first point seems legitimate enough, but I don't understand 2 - I don't see how it is a case of overdevelopment. You say it needs to be "proportionate"... but proportionate to what? It's a small development compared with many others locally. Is the density any higher than say the new buildings going up on the Dog Kennel Hill estate, or the former Warehouse site on Crystal Palace Road? Is the main conern about parking space for immediate neighbours on Chesterfield Grove?
  19. Wasn't the police station over the road also four storeys? And there are other four storey buildings around too (e.g. on East Dulwich Rd, and many blocks of flats in the area). There is a precedent for buildings of this size, or larger. A couple of extra flats is barely even a drop in the ocean.

    Sorry Bromley

TBF I thought that your Whitgift line was relatively amusing.
  21. Only time I remember going in there (2004ish?) I don't think it was gay OR west indian. In fact don't rememebr many people of any persuasion drinking in there. Quite a nice place though. It's tough to make a backstreet pub work, I guess.

  23. Highly unlikely to be under permitted development if they're building along the whole length of the kitchen. It will be going under full planning, and as such you'll have the opportunity to question/appeal the plans.
  24. "Blame" is probably part of it (especially with the anti-immigration right). But more broadly I think it's mainly about disillusionment with the status quo and convincing the electorate that you're a viable alternative to the establishment.
