While I agree that knives are probably often pulled out as a threat with no real intent to use, at the same time I'm not convinced that stabbing someone requires skill. We are not talking about ritualistic "kinfe fights" here.

  3. I went to school in the suburbs - although not really a "nice" area. Plenty of vicious fights (including a few hospitalisations) but stabbing was unheard of. It would have sent shockwaves through the whole town.
  4. If it's a McD's, I'm going to be sent out every Saturday morning for a McSausage Muffin + hash brown run. Let's hope it doesn't happen.
  5. I think ratty's post is a classic case of "moves out of London and tries to convince everyone how much better it is". tiddles - I don't think you sound naive at all. We all realise that big cities have social problems, it's a factor that all of us with kids have already weighed up. Exaggeration is not helpful.
  6. malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > His dad was a better actor, his half brother too? Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen are actually brothers (i.e. not half brothers). I think C.S. chose to take his Dad's stage surname, while E.E kept it real.
  7. OK OK, I get it. I retract the "not open during the day" accusation.
  8. Blah Blah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Tell that to the millions of expats in Spain who > don't speak any Spanish. Yep I feel exactly the same about English expats. They should speak the language. In fact English expats, for instance in Spain, are even worse because they can't blame poverty or lack of opportunity. LondonMix Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I can believe that some husbands from certain > cultures wouldn't allow or want their wives to > learn English for a multitude of reasons. What are the reasons? Surely we do not encourage opression of women, regardless of culture. So it's a moot point.
  9. Lunch? Did it even have a kitchen? My memory is obviously betraying me...
  10. Learning Enlgish within a certain time period would also be perfectly OK with me. But it needs to be a prerequisite for indefinite leave to remain.
  11. I'm not going to lose any sleep over this. If you want to live in a country, you should be able to speak the language - or have the desire and means to learn. The spouse should have thought of that before coming over. I have friends who grew up here, and whos parents barely speak English. It's inexcusable IMO.
  12. Are you sure you're not mistaking 6pm for daytime?
  13. Otta Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I stayed in a Travel Lodge the other night and > went to a Harvester next door for breakfast. > Cracking fry up for a fiver. It is (IMO) a pretty shit fry-up, but as you say it only costs a fiver which is pretty hard to argue with. And that includes unlimited "continental" buffet too (i.e. jam and toast, and tinned mandarins).
  14. Don't really like many of his films. Looking through the list on wikipedia... the bit parts in Ferris Bueller and Being John Malkovich look like the pick of the crop.
  15. The Jones fight in particular was purely business (even though Jones almost ruined the party!)
  16. Did the Harvester shut down before the fire, or did the fire force it to close? I don't remember. The reason I ask is that plenty of other Harvesters seem to work (i.e. lots of people like them and go to them). So if it's a good location, why didn't this one work?
  17. No surprise there. He clearly had little love for the sport by the time he fought Hopkins and Jones.
  18. I agree with the OP. More working days a year should equate to more days holidays a year. Although if I was being forced to work a six day week... that's the bit I'd really take issue with...
  19. No, none of the public's business. He's obviously had some issues dealing with this over the last few years - as you would. Terrible that he's been left no choice.
  20. It will take a bloody long time though. With 40 numbers, that is one trillion combinations to test...
  21. You can do it using Excel "Solver" Example here - very similar to what you need to do http://www.k2e.com/tech-update/tips/147-using-excel-to-identify-entries-that-add-to-a-specific-value
  22. Grok Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Maybe because this person looks like you rather than not? Sanctimonious bullshit.
  23. I don't see the problem. Surely no reputable landlord would want the residents of Peckham frequenting their establishment.
  24. It's just 2^n, isn't it? Soon becomes intractable with a large set.
  25. Are you talking about methodically assigning +ve/-ve signs to each number until you reach a solution? Easy to code in VBA.. but if your data set is large, you might find it surpisingly slow to compute.
