  1. I quite like the proposed roof extension... yes of course out of keeping with the original architecture but that doesn't automatically turn me off. The issue of access - maybe the security shouldn't be where it is, with people queueing in the street? Perhaps the queue should be contained within Copeland park.
  2. Hmmm... #1 and #2 for Peckham aren't actually in Peckham...

Would be nice to see something done with it - even if it's just a lick of paint.
  4. I think Jerninham Rd is unrestricted, so I'd imagine most of the other roads are too. Could also be worth checking out the Sainsburys car park over the road.
  5. How dare they get up before everyone else, and clear up the leaves to make sure everyone can get around safely. Is there no end to this selfishness?
  6. "Lazy Irish c***" was, I believe, the phrase. While it's not exactly nice, it's not really any worse than stuff that was directed at others on Top Gear on a regular basis. Surely this makes him a bit of a hypocrite?
  7. Yep... flats above high street shops is the norm in London, I thought?
  8. It used to be the case. Not sure it still is.
  9. "The elderly victim was left with a black eye" I, personally, am fed up with the word "black" being used in such a negative context.
  10. Yeah... think the Polish builders started doing well back in the 2000s because of the work ethic, not the price.

Well yes... I'm reading between the lines and trying to cut through the gumf, but this is probably the crux of it. It wouldn't be the first time.. similar problem potentially facing Canavans too.
  12. There is a precedent for blocking attempts to build flats next to clubs - e.g. Camden Koko and Ministry. So the petition presumably has a decent chance of changing the outcome. I wonder if the application contains any proposals for soundproofing, etc? Also wonder if the noise issue can be circumvented with certain measures, i.e. using the roof as the smoking area, exit via copeland road only after midnight, etc.
  13. TBH it kind of makes sense that immigrants, who have presumably come to the UK for a better life, would push their children and grandchildren to take full advantages of the opporunities available here.
  14. Is that actually true? I admit it's hard to see how it could work, seeing as people queue for the club through that gateway. But I think we need the facts here, rather than assumptions. The word "luxury" is not helpful, as pretty much every new apartment building in London is advertised as "luxury". Unsurprisingly the Southwark planning website is not working so can't see the application.
  15. the description is a little unclear. Will there still be access to the bussey building and copeland park from Rye Lane, through the gateway?
  16. In-work benefits are means tested. Why not pensions and freedom passes?
  17. LondonMix - for me it's about balance... debt/deficit needs to be reduced, but the burden should be shared. Cuts to government spending (certainly not just benefits), modest tax increases, and going after tax loopholes/evasion more aggressively should all be part of the equation.
  18. I'd take it a step further BB.. and argue that cabinet member and local MP should be separate jobs.

  20. nxjen Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The Brixton and Eltham M&S stores are probably > survivors from the times when M&S sold only > clothes and were not seen as particularly middle > class. Yep. Although these days Brixton is full of affluent professionals, and a house on a nice road is probably more expensive than ED. It's moved with the times.
  21. It certainly happened 20 yrs ago... "can I see that cigarette please"... not surprised it still happens now. It's no big deal. After the cops have driven off you mutter "f-ck the pigs", and tell your mates about how the filth are always on your back. It's tough being a teenager.
  22. Well... M&S IS more expensive than most other supermarkets, and their advertising obviously attempts to project an upmarket-ish image, so that could explain the "middle class destiation" tag, rather than simply our own perceptions. Can people afford it? If you can afford a ?1M house then a ?5 curry is hardly going to break the bank.
  23. Iceland's image problem has nothing to do with the prices.
  24. I broadly agree that people should do what they want with their own property. But letting it fall into complete disrepair shows lack of respect for the neighbours.
