Waterhouse was just a fabulous writer...novels, plays, journalism, television...I loved him in the (then) "Daily Mirror" and also in Punch. Although "Billy Liar" was his most famous creation I think "There Is A Happy Land" made a much deeper impression on me when I first read it. For the ignorant kids of today I suppose some of them might have heard of Wurzel Gummidge? :))
Chelsea got fined as well. They can still sell players but not buy them. I am wondering if there's scope for a loophole here involving loans?? And how exactly is "tapping up" defined? Does it count for instance if a player's agent is chatted to by another club's director? Or does there have to be real contact between the actual parties?
The Eduardo thing is a total fiasco. Even if he did deliberately cheat - and really there can be no certainty this is the case - UEFA have confirmed that it would only have been a booking if the referee had spotted it. How then can a two match ban be justified? I hope Arsenal appeal.
Didn't Mike Dean even get a mention in "The Street" for allegedly being a bit too much of a homer at Old Trafford? I see Wenger has now receieved an apology from Boss Ref for that piece of high farce near the end. 9 cards was ludicrous
>>Injury is not in question here Simon. He fell over without being touched to gain a penalty.<< Wenger contends, and having seen the replay a few times I think he may well be right, that there was contact between the goalkeeper and Eduardo. That being so I think overruling the referee in this instance would set an appalling precedent.

If that were the case then that is even more reason not to return him to the USA, as presumably if he is in possession of this sort of knowledge then the yanks would either want to lobotomise him or lock him up for decades. I think it is appalling he is being deported for something that is not an offence in the UK. We have no legal or moral obligation to abide by US criminal law.
They can allege he was a "cheat" but it is surely impossible to be certain? It's not like the guy who clutched his head when the ball had clearly hit his body, or Eduardo performed lots of melodramatic rolling and writhing after going down. I am all for systematically trying to eradicate the diving culture, but I don't this is a good example with which to launch such a campaign.
Despite Atila's typically umm....robust tone I agree with him about this Eduardo business. Diving for penalties has a long and ignoble history, and we can all name the usual suspects. Picking on Eduardo is just absurd. In addition I think Wenger's take on the whole business - that it was a penalty but not a dive, that Eduardo in particular is bound to be somewhat sensitive to the chances of incurring a serious injury and consequently there's going to be a fine line between diving and simply avoiding serious physical collisions. But where scarves etc are concerned he's on his own, and cheap shots at Liverpool - both the city and the club - just remind us why it is so easy not to love Arsenal. :))
"Free Range" was next door (I think) to where Franklins is - it later became the Noodle place. It was a bit classier han a greasy spoon, especially in its early days, but the standard soon dropped pretty alarmingly.
The "Now meet your customers" page in the media pack is especially entertaining. I see now why we no longer receive it here: wrong age, wrong gender and don't find the thing either credible or, uh, inspirational... :)
I checked out their website. I did not realise they were now owned by the Archant Group - who own loads of magazines, in particular all the "county" magazines. (We get "Yorkshire Life" here). I clicked on "contact us", hoping to find an email address where I could enquire about current distribution, and found instead an invitation to buy a subscribtion. Yeah right.
