  1. Are you a member of Which? You can join their Legal Helpline for a year for a basic fee and they will give you advice via email etc. Some end stage dementia can result in physical changes i.e. difficulty in eating/swallowing - needing pureed food. Medication needed to be provided anally/via syringe - which requires a nurse rather than a carer to assist. Poor swallowing requiring regular suctioning? Check up on the Continuing Care Guidelines - as possible in some cases to get NHS funding. Under the Care Act your parents are eligible for an Independent Advocate - check with Glos. Advice centre.
  2. I think that this is the Abbeyfield House- I did have some dealings with the residents some years ago, but since I have retired have not been involved. Was not sure whether the property still exsisted.
  3. Anchor Housing or Abbeyfield may have something - try internet for more details. Extra Care Sheltered Housing with private developer (McCarthy and Stone) can be quite expensive. Consider a live in carer - a friend in Ilford did this for his mother for many years as family did not want her to go into care. Age UK or Independent Age can give more details.
  4. Not a Barclays customer but with HSBC closing - went in there some weeks ago to use ATM and card was rejected as not recognised. Before they changed over to new system - had no problem withdrawing money out of that branch.
  5. I had mine at Kings - with the first I had a choice of Kings or Dulwich - was not keen on the ward at Dulwich- felt it was 'primitive' compared with Kings. (This was way back in the early 70s)
  6. Having worked for many years in Dulwich Hospital - when the wards were there and afterwards when wards transferred to Kings, some of the facilities were basic. Toilets which needed to be updated, windows which were difficult to open. Temperamental heating, lifts which were not operational at times. Not all water taps were for drinking and water tasted metallic.
  7. Our large food waste caddy delivered today - with a smaller caddy inside it. We do not generate sufficient garden waste to warrant brown bin which we still have!
  8. Does the same apply to engineered wood flooring?
  9. We requested a large food caddy a few weeks ago - still not received it. Decided to get rid of brown garden waste bin and decided that the small amount we produce ( we have compost bin) it was easier to pay for sacks.
  10. Most NHS admin jobs include computer work - are you up on Excel/ emails/other programmes. You may wish to find out what systems you would need to use i.e Patient Records etc. Would you have access to training courses to increase your knowledge. Times of work - many NHS workers now cover weekends or evenings would you be required to do this.
  11. We are fairly well served with bus routes in ED - knowing that I can get 185/176/40 to Camberwell etc is great and also the choice of 185/176/197 to Forest Hill and beyond. Having relatives living in West Sussex where there are no late night buses and you are forced to use cabs (if you can find a company) you appreciate our bus service. Where my daughter lives there are no buses after 10 pm and also no buses to take you to the nearest supermarket a couple of miles away. Where my parents lived - initially there was an hourly bus which over 20 years changed to every 15 minutes and now runs to about 10.30 pm. We were caught out one year as the train we were on was running 30 minutes late, we missed the last bus, and it cost us almost ?30 for 6 miles for a cab.
  12. Hubby in his 60s - weekly phone call to one mate who he has known since his 20s, they meet up roughly every 2 weeks either in Redbridge, or London for a lunch time meal and coffee. Monthly phone call with another mate known since 20s, every 2/3 months meet up in town for a pizza. 2 ex work colleagues - irregular phone calls but meet up every few months in Dulwich for lunch time meal. Another friend and the only one married with child regular phone calls and odd meal up town or in Croydon. He goes out more than me for meals as my friends are usually popping in for cuppas type of people. Having been married for 37 years we have his friends, my friends and our friends. Very rarely does he go out to pub for a drink. With the Redbridge friend - the 3 of us frequently go out for a meal together. Even when our kids were younger, hubby kept in touch with friends and although since he has retired has more time and money to enjoy lunch time meals.
  13. As one of the few people who do not have a mobile phone I object to being pressurised by the council/Sainsburys/ and any other corporate body to own one in order to pay for goods or services. Many elderly (and younger) people do not have mobiles for various reasons including disability, nor do they pay by card.
  14. Being nosey - blue lights for past couple of hours, looks as though road has been closed due to an incident.
  15. It was for a non urgent appointment so was not worried - however when seen was asked to get an x ray to rule out a certain condition.
  16. Road is split between Dulwich Hill ward and Goose Green Ward
  17. Sorry, Pizzas and burgers are not my thing, I would rather have a decent Thai or Chinese restaurant. Have eaten in both ED Thai establishments - average and below average food.
  18. My GP surgery appears to always have GPs who work a variety of hours - many of them part time. Some times a 2 week wait to appointments. I went to make an appointment in person one day and was offered one for an hour later! Could not take it as had prior engagement so made another appointment which was around 10 days time.
  19. Southwark over the past few years has had a bed bug infestation. I had to deal with this many times during my working career. Sometimes due to some of the rented accommodation not providing new mattresses to subsequent tenants. However, once they are in a property (Beds, furniture, carpets etc) they are very difficult to get rid of professionally and sometimes requiring more than one treatment. There was a instant several years ago where someone moved into sheltered accommodation with furniture which had infestation and the whole sheltered housing unit had to be closed and fumigated over a number of months.
  20. Gumboots once again will be holding their 4 week holiday play scheme. Details below. 29th July ? 23rd August 2019 8am ? 6pm ?35.00 per child per day to include trips and afternoon snack For Primary School aged children Contact ? [email protected]
  21. I remember the mini golf by the lake in Dulwich Park.
  22. We have been trying to get brown bags from library for the best part of 6 weeks, we have a brown bin but knew from experience that our once a year full garden maintenance produces much more. The gardeners solved it by bringing several large bags (used for sand etc) and did several trips to the tip.
  23. I have been involved with the Community Traffic Watch - local residents who feel that their road/area attracts drivers who go at excessive speeds can request a traffic watch. Speed guns are provided by the Police and Police have to be present during the watch. Hi Vis waistcoats have to be worn. Anyone caught going over 25mph has their registration recorded and these numbers are collated. If the same registration number appears several times re speeding, then further letter/action is taken.
  24. The police are understaffed and very stretched and are leaving in their drones due to the pay and conditions they are expected to work in. If you have to work 7 days a week as your rest days were cancelled, you would feel miffed. When you think of 2/3 police officers per ward on foot or bicycle they cannot cover every street. Hopefully the crime was reported to the Police (Village SNT).
  25. A colleague saw Idris Elba in Lordship Lane a couple of weeks ago and spoke to him.
