  1. The closure of part of Barry Road has been detailed in the Southwark News for the last 3/4 week although not in last Thursdays. The impression I got was that only one side of the carriage way would be open, temp traffic lights? No indication re bus routes etc. We saw the diversion signs going up yesterday for 12 and 197 - via lordship lane but no other indications.
  2. Once again the EDCCA welcome you to our annual Open Day. This year it will be on Friday 13th September 11 - 2.30 pm. Vauxhall City Farm will again be bringing a selection of their animals. Further details see attachment.
  3. The only problem with Chichester is the parking - I know this area quite well as parents used to live near there. Last time we visited we went by train as hotel did not have parking and there was no street parking. Will have a look again.
  4. Some people make their own bikes from an assortment of 'pieces'
  5. We have a number of special birthdays coming up in early 2020 - ranging from 4,16,21,34,47 and 70 years - all between 17th January and 2nd February. and I suggested a family weekend away. Suggestion of Worthing as everyone can get there by either car or train. Will be either 8 or 9 adults and 2 children under 6. If only 8 adults - we would need 3 double/twin rooms plus a family room for 4. Would like a hotel or good B & B with breakfast as we plan to eat out in the evening. If we are 9 would need a single room as well. Tried several hotels and B & B s for Sat 1st/Sun 2nd Feb but most places booked up or have limited rooms. Family rooms seem to cater for only one child (we will have a 4 year old and his almost 6 year old sister) Do not want to go for a Premier Inn or such as special occasion. Have even tried Butlins at Bognor but they do not appear to be open. Any suggestions/recommendations welcome. Needs to be within 2 hours car drive south of London, near a railway station (in case of bad weather also non drivers)Also within an hour or so drive from Goring on Sea, and rail/coach distance from Portsmouth. have also looked at a couple of hotels in Arundel- again lack of availability in either dates or rooms. Alternative suggestions? Due to work/school/university commitments we cannot do Friday - Monday so Self catering in currently not an option.
  6. I had LPA for my Dad for around 10 years. LPAs superseded Enduring Powers of Attorney which needed to be registered with the Courts of Protection - but once registered can be used even though LPAs were now the alternative. Dad did his through his solicitor with me present - this was because Dad was going through a separation with my step mother and he wanted to change his will at the same time. Once the certified copies came through I took them to Nat West Bank along with ID for myself also proof of address etc. Nat West did not know what to do with them so I had to explain that they needed to photocopy them as well as my ID details and signature and arrange that all statements went to my address. The bank manager I met later on apologised for her staff's lack of knowledge - it was a small village branch and they rarely had to deal with such requests. I was also issued with cheque books with my name on plus Dad's name, and a debit card. Barclays bank also had copies of the certificated documents and my ID and Dad agreed to use the money in this account to purchase a Funeral Plan - he signed the cheque at this stage and I later closed the account as he used Nat West for his pensions/bills etc. Years later - I discovered annual bank statements in his drawer at the care home (he was registered blind at this stage). Went along to Barclays to sort out this account which they had forgotten to tell me about and found that because all their records had been sent to a larger branch, could not find original documentation. What was worse since he had not drawn on the account for many years, and money a couple of thousand of pounds had been put into a 'general account'. Took nearly a year to sort out. Lesson - once certified copies are received - take them to banks/building society. perhaps with parents, and make sure that all accounts are covered and where bank statements are to be sent. Ideally get a letter confirming that they are in receipt of documentation and confirmation as to who received statements. Keep accurate accounts as Courts of Protection can ask for annual accounts. Also if anyone challenges the attorneys 'honesty' COP can call in the accounts/statements at any time. I am in the process of doing an LPA for finance/property for myself and hubby. I think the special instructions relating to Health and Welfare may relate to End of Life Care and funeral wishes. From professional experience it is very hard for families to discuss death with their loved ones and it may be easier to have this discussion when completing LPA forms. My mother had stated that she did not want to die alone or in hospital and had requested that if possible she die in St. Christopher's Hospice. When it was realised she would only have days to live, we were able to get her into the hospice where she passed away 10 days later. St Christopher's have booklets on End of Life care and wishes which may be helpful to you. LPAs are less costly to undertake and need to be taken out when the donor has full mental capacity and is able to understand and consent to the procedure. If someone lacks mental capacity - the application to the Courts of Protection is expensive and arduous and requires considerable documentation - also confirmation from a professional i.e. GP, OT. Social Worker, Nurse, solicitor - that person does not have the mental capacity to understand and manage their finances. It used to take COP upto 26 weeks from receiving forms to officially appointing Attorney etc, but there was talk of this being reduced to around 20 weeks. From my experience LPAs tend to take around 12 weeks.
  7. There are a number of them in ED - my aunt used to live in one in Pellatt Road. Only 2 bedrooms - lived there well after her girls married and only left when husband died. She loved the house. As long as the front door has good locks should not be a problem
  8. We used to get our eggs from a local butcher until he closed down and always returned the polystyrene egg boxes to him which he forwarded to the producer. Our current butcher will not take back egg boxes so we give to a friend who has chickens and sometimes has an excess of eggs to give away.
  9. Wallpaper pasting tables are good.
  10. Most GPs have a catchment area - The Gardens changed theirs some time ago going more towards Nunhead.Rye/Peckham area rather than Barry Road area
  11. Following a death - hubby inherited a property which was divided into 3 flats - one flat was leased out but the remaining 2 flats needed extensive work on them. We were quoted ?60.000 (15 years ago) just for external repairs. i.e. guttering, damp course, replacement windows, repointing etc. That was without updating electrics and remodelling rooms i.e. grotty kitchen and bathroom, and all decorations. Hubby not practical and project was to big for me also we did not gave the cash to fork out for builders. In the end the sitting tenant got a mortgage and purchased the 2 flats from us (in 2 stages) and took a couple of years to modernise the place. We sold it cheaply to get rid of the property- but in hindsight if we could have raised the repair money and had professionals in to do the work- we could have got over ?1 million for it as a large detached property in its own grounds
  12. When I lived in Holland - chips with either curry sauce or mayonnaise were the favourites. I preferred the roll mop bap as not a big chip fan. family thought I had odd tastes!
  13. I have always found Southwark News keen to report on local stories/concerns.
  14. If you attend your local police SNT meetings you will find that all reported crimes/concerns are mentioned and usually a spate of scams/attempted crimes/concerns occur in specific areas/ certain times. The police then have enough/sufficient intelligence to monitor the situation. It may be that a certain person was just released from prison and are back to their old tricks and operating in the local area. We are aware that theft of 4 x 4 vehicles are occurring in areas of ED but neighbouring areas of Nunhead and Peckham are also being targeted which police feel is the work of a particular gang/persons. Awareness of these different crimes/scams etc can lead to increased police patrols.
  15. Check with the allotment management committee or other allotment owners if they have had similar experiences.
  16. I gather from our local police officer that the photo of the men was sent to them and passed around officers from adjoining wards and someone Identified one of them. They are urging more people to report crimes as the 'criminals' are crossing ward borders and patterns are emerging of particular crimes.
  17. This is a dodgy corner, especially if you are driving up from CPR into LL - difficult to see the traffic coming up from Townley. I tend to use Landells road.
  18. Do you mean the junction of Friern Road (where 12 buses stand) with Lordship Lane? Did you try and cross using the island? This can be dicey as cars coming round the bend from The Grove do tend to speed. Best bet to walk down to lights outside Dulwich Library.
  19. Emily's North Cross Road - run by Ahmed and his wife.
  20. The only family firm I can recommend is F.A. Albin in Bermondsey. They did a couple of old friends of ours. Having had to arrange 6 family funerals over the years - do not be afraid to get comparative quotes as we found costs differ by up to a ?900. Check whether deceased had a pre paid funeral plan. Both my Mum and Dad had one - there was a considerable difference in their plan and the 'market price'. We saved around a ?1000 or more because the plans had been taken out many years previously.
  21. Next Door has been promoted by the Met and what I gathered at a police meeting that you need to register your address etc but this is to clarify that you are a genuine resident. Your details should not be publicised. I wonder if this is a scam website ? Check with your ward SNT officer - details from Met Police website.
  22. A friend of mine had a small tree in a large ceramic pot in her front garden -that got nicked- would have taken 2 people to lift it.
  23. We had rats in our dining room a couple of years ago. Got Pest control company who pointed out that 2 doors down were doing building work and had obviously disturbed a nest whilst dinging the foundations for an extension. Laid down poison under a loose floorboard, came back twice to check situation - not had rats since. Touch wood.
  24. There are bylaws relating to times of work and I have a feeling that noisy work/building is prohibited on a Sunday. Check with Environmental Services at Southwark.
  25. If I am correct - St. Aidans Road come under the Dulwich Hill SNT. There are 2 new officers PC. Lewis and PC Brewer Their priorities for the next 3 months are vehicle crimes, and school liaison You can contact them via the Met police website under Dulwich Hill. They also hold 'surgeries' at Christ Church (Weds lunch time?) and at St. Clements Church Friern Road - not sure of days for this. Please report this - Dulwich Hill ward is thought to be low crime area compared with the 2 other Dulwich SNT - however it has been discovered that residents are not reporting crimes to the SNT as they feel that Police will not be able to do anything. With the other SNTs it was discovered that more residents were reporting crimes and this has lead to a more visible police presence in specific streets/more car patrols also an arrest which resulted in less crime in those areas.
