  1. Following the BARA Committee Meeting with Cllr James McAsh - we agreed on the following. Southwark wish to have public consultation over their proposals for reducing speed and improving safety in Barry Road and this is likely to take place in September. James will liaise with the appropriate department and obtain possible dates to enable the meeting to take place at the East Dulwich Community Centre in Darrell Road. BARA will assist with publicity for the event. In the interim period, having been in discussion with the Police Road Watch Team, it is suggested that further speed checks be made to clarify whether speeding has become more prominent since the last speed checks were carried out. For this to happen we need to have volunteers to work with the Road Watch Team, one volunteer to aim the speed gun and the other to jot down the speeds. It is suggested that 1 -2 hours will be required. The Road Watch Team have advised that if you are a Barry Road resident, you should not 'zap' near your home i.e. if you live at the Lordship Lane end, it is suggested you operate near Goodrich (this is in case you zap an immediate neighbour!) If you are interested in being part of the Road Watch Team - please pm me with possible times/dates/days you are available so that we can co ordinate with police officers concerned. BARA are aware that usually 'serious' car crashes get reported to the council and police and are interested in hearing as to whether people have experienced 'near misses' and minor bumps in Barry Road. If so, whereabouts in the road and time of day. It was mentioned that with the increased use of Barry Road by school children attending, St. Anthony's, Heber, Goodrich, the new Harris school in Whatley Road, and Harris Boys Forest Hill/Friern Roads, that this could be a factor of increased car usage in the area and speeding. Please remember that the Dulwich Community Council Meeting will be held at Dulwich Library on Tuesday 17th July 7pm
  2. This is the BARA Committee Meeting and the aim is to discuss with Cllrs as to next actions etc and to arrange an open/public meeting to alert/advise/etc local residents. Once we have a plan - we will advertise in EDF.
  3. Does not sound like my guy,. I also know that he is not a drinker he prefers his coffee to alcohol - never seen him with booze. He does talk loudly, but never seen him reel about. If he got off at the stop before Horniman, he would need to walk back towards Underhill to his flat. Last time I heard about him was that he was singing in the St. Christopher's' Hospice Choir.
  4. He used to meet up with friends in Forest Hill so I am wondering whether they have moved or died. He has asked me to marry him frequently over the last 10 years, even suggesting that I divorce my husband!. Of course this is done in a jokey manner. I have the impression that he may be autistic as he does lack social skills at times and can act or speak inappropriately. He can be a generous man and has a fantastic memory especially if you engage him in discussion about films and TV programmes
  5. Which junction is this - looks at though could be Underhill? The Barry Area Residents' Association is hopefully meeting some of the local councillors on Tuesday evening to discuss this matter with a view to having a public meeting.
  6. Yes he is well known in the Dulwich area and lives in Lordship Lane. During the warmer months he swims daily at Brockwell Lido. He is known to have inappropriate behaviour with females and you have to be very strict with him about invading your personal space. Those of us who have known him for years, do not encourage him to be familiar with us. He is well known to local councillors as he has been fighting for years to get a pelican crossing at the Grove Tavern end of Lordship Lane especially as there is a sheltered housing complex there for visually impaired residents. I have not seen or talked with him for several months although I heard that his dog (Adam) died. He lives alone and often strikes up conversations with strangers. I have never known him to behave as you describe with total strangers.
  7. Unfortunately fly tipping on the pavement outside the clothes collection bin at the Plough. A double divan base which blocks most of the pavement. Will try and get hold of the council tomorrow.
  8. There should be but not sure who is running it or the date for their first meeting. If you substitute dulwichhill with goosegreen- the above email should get you through to the police officer for that area
  9. With the ward changes, the East Dulwich Police SNT no longer exists, the Dulwich Hill SNT will hold it's first meeting On Monday 23rd July 18.00 - 19.30 in the back room in Christ Church, 263 Barry Road. It will be a general introduction of police officers and a general over view of policing in the ward. As space is limited, if you are representing your road, can you nominate one or two people as representative. Please email [email protected] if you wish to attend.
  10. When we purchased our house (large to accommodate 6 people) in the 1970s, we had an oil fired boiler. We then replaced this with a Potterton which lasted many years. The boiler is based in a seperate brick 'house' adjacent to our downstairs bathroom. At the time we had to have a floor based boiler due to the number of rooms in the house. We renewed our central heating system a couple of years ago to a Worcester boiler which is fixed onto the wall of the 'boiler house' we had to raise the height of the house by around 2 feet to allow for the flue. However, we do not have the hot water run off the boiler (it meant re plumbing the whole house and too much agro having 3 elderly relatives with mobility problems plus young children) instead we have 2 multi points- one downstairs which covers kitchen, shower and wash basin, and one upstairs which covers 2 sinks, and bath. If you have the tank in the cellar will you need a pressure 'booster'> Also planning permission?
  11. I am a trustee of 2 charities, both of which have accounts with Barclays. One charity has tried to do on line banking in order to pay wages but have been refused as 2 signatories are needed on cheques, and on line will only authorise 1 person to access the account. Since the charity receives grants- the requirement is that all financial transactions must have 2 signatories to prevent fraud. This week I had to meet with a financial advisor at my bank, since my local branch has closed, had to go elsewhere, the earliest appointment I could be given was 2 weeks time at the Surrey Quays Branch as my nearest branch was booked up. They managed to find me a slot yesterday-but I had to cut short a previous appointment elsewhere in order to make the time. This was not something I could deal with on line as I had to produce IDs and also sign documents. On line banking does not suit every one. Lloyds informed my husband when he went there that until they had written confirmation that their branch was not being closed they were not permitted to install disabled access.
  12. Please report this to your local Police and give a description of car(s) and driver (if seen) I gather that there have been other complaints re reckless driving in this area but Police require more details.
  13. My friend ( a woman in her 70s) was followed by a middle aged man from East Dulwich Grove to Worlingham Road a few weeks ago. He followed her into 2 shops and she thought she had shaken off, but he reappeared by the Goose Green Roundabout and followed her again. She eventually turned to face him and asked him if he needed help or directions, he then ran off. We told her to notify the police as this was off behaviour.
  14. Area around East Dulwich Grove - difficult for parking. Rodwell and Silvester good for parking and generally Pellatt. Fellbrigg and Hansler get full up during the day and early evening
  15. Many decades ago, the people of ED requested a loo in Lordship Lane as various pubs were not sympathetic to those with weak bladders or had children in tow. The ideal site was identified - North Cross Road by the electricity sub station but it was not to be. Many cafes have toilets at the very back of the premises and staff will question non customers. Other premises have toilets down steep flights of stairs - not ideal if you have mobility problems or have young children. I would find it difficult to go into a caf? and ask for the loo - and would feel obliged to purchase something on the way back from toilet. A caf? in Peckham has it's toilets locked up and you have to ask staff to give you the keys and this can take some time if they are busy. I can understand why they do this as by a railway station which does not have a loo.
  16. If you can hang on until October the Give and Take Day at East Dulwich Community Centre will take small electrical goods and they have a PAT tester on site.
  17. Just to advise that the Dulwich Community Council are now meeting 17th July 7 pm at Dulwich Library. ( I had previously posted that it was Monday 25th at Christ Church but this was later cancelled) BARA members will be raising the issue re speeding with the councillors in both Goose Green and Dulwich Hill wards which cover the whole of Barry Road.
  18. The Barry Area Resident's Association which covers the majority of Barry Road are also involved in seeking discussion and possible consultation with local residents, councillors and SNT. Please PM me for more details.
  19. The Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams are in the process of setting dates for their regular meetings with the local community. It looks likely that the Dulwich Hill SNT will be meeting at Christ Church Barry Road in July (date not fixed yet). The Goose Green SNT has yet to be set up I believe.
  20. I try and keep to the 20mph speed but am constantly hooted and shouted at by other motorists as they overtake me at around 40 mph. I try not to come out of side roads to cross or enter into Barry Road as the road visibility is poor and you have to inch out in the road to get a clear view. Barry Road is covered by 2 wards Goose Green and Dulwich Hill - so these new councillors need to sort out their surgeries, and also take part in traffic speed exercises. Cllr Charlie Smith (Goose Green) is quite clued up on the speed issues.
  21. I have noticed recently driving down Barry Road from Church end that tree branches are obscuring the lights at the Upland/Barry junction. If you are unfamiliar with this road, it is not until you are almost at the junction that you notice the lights.
  22. Did you purchase it privately or from a car dealer? Is there a connection with the car dealer and thief? Many years ago I heard of a GP who ordered a very expensive new car to be delivered to his surgery. It came in a covered trailer lorry. Was stolen within a few days and the view of the police at that time, was that the thieves had been tipped off somewhere down the line as to make of car, delivery time and venue. Local residents had reported to police that they had seen men hanging around the surgery for several hours. Car was found shipped abroad
  23. I can remember Angel Delight - that was a treat. Pilchards or Sardines on toast. Soft roes on toast. Vesta Curry - in a packet - we were daring in those days! Our house ( or rather flat) in Spurling Road was not wired for power only light, so we could not have a fridge. Mum used to stand bottle in pail of cold water in the hallway (coldest place) or get bottle of sterilised milk, which was great in custards. Cremola - it was a yellow coloured semolina - which you made in saucepan with milk. My Nan in Landells Road had a fridge but I cannot recall having much processed food there. I stayed at my Nan's from Friday to Sunday each week as Mum was a single working parent and money did not run to food for the 2 of us 7 days a week. Mum came up for Sunday dinner - always a roast as Nan and my 2 aunts all worked so good money going into the house.
  24. If you have evidence that this is a grooming situation, the social worker and all those involved may not be aware of all the facts. However, you will need to provide evidence and not hearsay. Mental Capacity Assessment may have indicated that the young person has the capacity to understand, retain and weigh up the situation and possible risks involved, so very little can be done.
  25. We find bacon, eggs and chicken thighs reasonable at WR
