  1. "And in other news, people are still getting slaughtered in Syria, Iraq, Afgsnistsn, DRC ...." Cop-out. Why wasn't that your FIRST post on this thread ? Because you hadn't had robust challenges to your belligerent views by then.

I really hope that locals near Southall and Wembley are not also hoping to culturally-cleanse those areas. For me, Rye Lane is an example of the benefit of a cross-cultural city. If you don't see it, because its not "the way WE do things around here", then you're missing out - but don't spoil it for those who use it as part of their day-to-day life !
  3. jacks09 - The American lady who took over the stall has perhaps been avoiding the windy weather ? Dogfather has 2x tents (one for cooking/serving, one for sitting/eating) and Coops was always in fear of them taking off - even on what seemed like mild days. So maybe (hopefully) just the weather.
  4. I also like their "bar boo por" version of that dish.

yeah but forgetting the magic numbers for a minute, people ARE managing to survive after shopping on Rye Lane - agreed ? If so, how DO they manage it, what with all the smells n stuff ? Maybe because of their backgrounds they're, you know, sort of immune to meat and fish which is going off ? ....and (the old favourite) that's probably why they put curry powder in their food, to hide the taste of the rotting meat ? Does that about cover it ?!

so... sweet sweet smelling LORDship lane is, in reality, a stinking fetid rancid cesspit !! See, you can't go by smells alone.

    Rye Lane

yeah but that's irrelevant to Rye Lane now - as in, the discussion about the shops and retail premises on Rye Lane isn't going to change on account of demographic movements that happened 50+ years ago. The shops serve who's there/shopping there, now.
  8. also check if there's a preservation order on the tree, if so you're buggered - though sure if this happens in London (I've experienced it outside London only).

"I'd prefer to buy when I know it's been caught a few hours previous too (Billingsgate)" In an ideal world I'm sure everyone would John.

It's up to environmental health to address hygiene concerns (which is the point of the comments about smells, right ?). If EH are happy with those shops, they stay open. A lot of these comments come across as very us / them, just because you don't like another culture's habits don't try and squash them into how you want it to be. Maybe if you bought the produce and cooked it and ate it you'd be more accepting ? Thousands of shoppers daily are managing for the two decades I've known about it ! No, stop. Someone says it's smelly.

The open shutter nature you speak of may appear lazy but it's more efficient from the shopkeeper's perspective and is often a part of the culture, whether it be Afghanistan, Indian subcontinent, SE Asia or Africa. It's common in these places for the shopkeeper and family to live / sleep in the shop space when the shutters are down and also move their car in there at night (too cold in UK). It will all change, sadly, so you'll get your wish in the next 5 - 10 years for sure. A sterile honky-focused high st selling the same crap as every other high st.

I'd guess that with the discount / pound shops selling stationery, stalls selling blank digital media etc. the shoppers couldn't see the point of paying WHSmith prices.

I get my goat and fish there. Also in the summer you can get HUGE African live snails to boil-up, mmmmmmm good. I'm not comfortable with the inferences equating smells with disarray - I think that's your own boundaries being threatened there, it's been there years and works fine but the reason to change it shouldn't be because you don't like it. Go to Moxons if you wanna pay 3x ! Or just don't buy there if you think it's sooooo dodgy.
  14. My mate had a Renault Scenic for 12 yes or so, got him through 3 kids, festivals, trips to Europe and it never failed him. He just got it serviced every year as suggested in the guide book.

You SAID on your post that no one listens to you !! I'm not presuming anything !!!!

    Rye Lane

So basically I like Rye Lane as it is - regardless of how it got there - and you want it to be how it was 40 years ago because you liked it then. And you're wondering why no-one listens !

Whatever the background it's great as it is.
  18. I was there a couple of weeks ago and didn't really notice any difference, yeah the decor was a bit upgraded and i didn't get hassle, but i had no impression of anything having changed drastically. It's the same, reallly.

wow people really think that music shouldn't occur in streets, the place where all public mix and pass each other - no music ? Rye Lane exceeds optimal for me by so many fold - and one reason (which I hadn't realised until someone said to stop all music) is the sounds - I asked one guy what language he was speaking he said Pashtu i said do you like the music over there that Ragga, he said he was getting well into it and so were his peers. It's plain more fun on Rye Lane.

'inertia' - why ? because it's not going where YOU want it to ?! Everything has to constantly 'progress' ? BTW - I actually DO get (very) exited about Rye Lane as it is when I am heading there on a Saturday morning, but if I didn't like it I'm not sure that's a reason for changing the way it's set-up.
  21. If aircraft noise, at the level we hear it in ED, is too much for people then either they have super-sensitive hearing or they're not going to bed tired enough - in which case stay up later.

  23. Volvo v40 is a good smal estate. If you need more stowage you can fit a roof box.
  24. Milo's gallery up by the Olympic site is great, there's an early Picasso museum, the park Gaudi designed and all his buildings, watch your belongings on Las Ramblas.
  25. The morning after what was arguably the windiest night in London for years, there's hardly any stalls at the market - obvious proof that the market is dying. Doh.
