  1. No, I realise that being a charity doesn't mean people can't object to it. Or that it is in any way perfect! :-$ I'm not trying to pick a fight with you either, by the way - I was just trying to correct what I saw as a mistake in your post about the school making a profit - that was all.
  2. No, Huguenot, the school is a CHARITY. That means it can't "make a profit", as you put it. The coaches will be run as a self-financing operation.
  3. Presumably Huguenot you are referring to the coach companies rather than the school in your comment?
  4. With regard to jim the chin's comment: I believe that this strip of land is classed as Metropolitan Open Land and can't be built on or used as a car park etc. Planning laws don't allow.
  5. Well, rahrahrah the line goes through Clock House (near Beckenham), Lower Sydenham, Catford and Ladywell then fast to Lon Bridge (actually it doesn't always stop there) Waterloo East & Charing Cross. So if you fancy a run to one of those, you're in business!!
  6. St Francis Xavier 6th form college between Clapham South and Balham is what I presume sian is talking about!
  7. Wonderful stuff, chick, I remember their first broadcast back in 64. Broke the mould of UK pop radio forever. I'll be listening for sure.
  8. What about trying those very good grammar schools down in Orpington (Bromley borough) - St Olave's (boys, takes girls in 6th form) and Newstead Wood - girls only? Harriet Harman got her son into St O's and she was living in Dulwich at the time.
  9. Yes, I've signed up for this...thanks for making me aware, BigDad!!
  10. IMHO Goodliz you might be better off buying a folding bike - Bromptons are fantastic, but there are other cheaper makes too - which can be kept in your house/flat and by your desk at work, so you won't have this problem. Just a thought.
  11. Sorry e-dealer! I clearly need new reading glasses. EDmummy, as a parent of a boy and 2 girls I/we wanted them to go to a mixed school. Personally, I just don't get single sex schools, but I can see others like them. It was just not right for our brood. We didn't want them to be separated in terms of schools.
  12. ????? Have another look at your post! I merely copied and pasted the first sentence of your final paragraph.
  13. The e-dealer said: "There are too many private schools in the area, and not enough decent state schools." I can agree with your first point, but as to the second, surely having fewer private schools would mean that it would be even harder to get a place at a state secondary like Charter? I don't see the relevance of the number of private schools! Of course, if private schools were abolished altogether (?) then that would mean that richer people would have to send their kids to state schools, which might lead to a rapid improvement in them as a consequence. But that's a different argument!!
  14. I'd like to mention "Summer in the city" Lovin' Spoonful from 1966
  15. Well said Steve, totally agree. These kids should have been taught what is right and wrong by their parents.
  16. Thanks for a great post, shortedcomputer!
  17. No, kford, those cars are too valuable whole to break them up for spares.
  18. Are we nearer to Norwood, than Camberwell? Your nearest s'market must be Sainsbury's at Crystal Palace (this area is ruled by Sainsbury unless you fancy the trek to Waitrose in Beckenham.
  19. W**f, you are right - Bara Brith is just lovely. I made some myself a year or two ago, having enjoyed them over many years on visits to the Principality. A cup of tea is the correct accompaniment.
  20. Sorry, Jenny, I just don't understand your post. Could you clarify, or am I just thick? I would place cakes 1 Eccles, 2 Welsh 3 Chorley
  21. Hi Gavin, Thank you for the unpleasant tone of your comment addressed at me. Shows me I was right to vote for the Lib Dems as opposed to hectoring b*stards like you. Maybe you could take up Gimme's point and post on here like James Barber has done so effectively? Only it might be an idea to adjust your tone, if you do!!:)
  22. I am delighted that you and your three LibDem colleagues were re-elected. I am sure the main reason you lost control of the council was the higher turnout because the election was at the same time as the General Election. I.e., people just voting the same way on both meant the Labour vote went up in several wards.
  23. Get yourselves a folding bike. Then you can easily keep them indoors, both at home or at work. Problem solved. I thought they were crap until I bought a Brompton through the Ride2work scheme which also saves you around 50% of the cost. They may have small wheels, but they are great bikes.
  24. It seems that the recount in the Chaucer ward has produced two libdem and one labour councillors. If dc's figures are right (see above) then that means Labour has a majority of 4 in the council. Bad news.
