  1. I'm a former sub-editor - it's in my blood to edit. Can't help myself! http://www.cool-smileys.com/images/284.gif There, see! I've done it again...
  2. She'll never become mayor of London. She's married to a man who's been convicted twice of accepting a bribe to commit perjury in an Italian court. It was finally overturned because his third appeal proceedings ran out of time. As the Daily Mail reported on 18 Sept last year: "She was dragged into her husband?s controversial financial affairs in 2006 when it emerged that she had signed papers for a loan secured on their London home ? which was subsequently paid off with the help of the alleged bribe."
  3. Anyone reading this thread through (if they can bear it) will be hard pressed to find any nastiness or abusiveness from me, Huguenot.
  4. 'Summary for page 3: Some young people decided to hold, or join, an event on a local roundabout with the intention of stopping local traffic. There is an issue about whether this was done with due regard for public safety. John K' http://www.cool-smileys.com/images/10.gif
  5. Look, stop behaving like a troll, go and do a bit of reading, get your facts right, then put on your best dancing gear, get out there - and shake your booty for the sisters!
  6. Now you're just being plain old silly, Hugeunot. Whoever said women are refusing to have sex with anyone until the 'end of the rape culture'!!!!?????! Now that's the biggest defensive reaction I've ever heard on this subject, and no mistake. There's no reasoning with some people.
  7. I'm sure you're right, Gingerbeer, but Huguenot's remark probably comes nearer to what's going on here: "Furthermore, if we set targets based on OTHER people's behaviour or activities, the outputs are resentment, disengagement and poor cooperation." It's the same-old same-old. Just the mention of tackling rape brings a few highly defensive chaps out of the woodwork bleating that 'oh, you think all men are rapists blah blah.' Well, actually, the wonderful thing about this VDay lark is that many men (who are not defensive and so sensitive, and who realise there is a problem) are joining in the protest, and don't feel 'resentment, disengagement and poor co-operation'. They are able to look outside themselves to the actual victims of this crime and want to support them. The more men the merrier, in my view. I found it very moving and heartening to see the large numbers of men who also came out in protest against the unbelievably hideous incident in India recently. In fact, and it may be non-PC of me to say this, without the support of men who also believe the current situation is an outrage, this movement will be stymied. But you win some you lose some. Hey ho.
  8. Great stuff Gingerbeer. You get it. But don't waste your time on him. It's the cause he has a problem with, not the words.
  9. I think I'll just leave you to dig your own grave... ta ta.
  10. What is your problem, exactly? I don't think you're being very honest with us here. It's not just a problem you have with the slightly dubious grammar of the organisation's statement is it?
  11. The status quo is the situation world-wide in which rape is so prevalent and in many cultures accepted as normal. VDay is where women - and men - by coming together in this way express their wish for this to stop, and will do so until this ends. Just doing this can be effective. It's like any protest, whether it's against the Vietnam war or anything else. But why am I wasting my time with a pedant?
  12. Stop trying to be a clever dick...
  13. It's not rocket science brandnewguy...

  15. Hi Sabrina, as the e-dealer said, there's absolutely no way Britain will leave the EU. It would be economic suicide. The Tory party are just desperate to win a few more supporters among "little Englanders" and the more right-wing business classes who want the workers' rights forced on them by the EU removed. Anyway, the process would take years, so they don't have enough time to do it anyway as they'll be out of government in the next election in two years' time. By the way, I'd give anything to be able to live in Italy! (although I know the political situation there is as bad as it is here!)
  16. Ooops! Meant to reply to thread from someone asking whether they should buy a southwark freehold flat, not this one! Sorry...
  17. Hi Coman. Thanks for your interest. I'll keep you all informed of first date via PM in early January!
  18. Thanks Bayamesa. Well, I seem to have at least five people interested, so I'm going to set a provisional date for after all the festivities, maybe in second week Jan. I can accommodate six people, and if any more interested would do a second evening in week too. Many thanks for the interest. It really is for beginners who want to take their enjoyment to another level - the lives of the composers are fascinating, as is the development of music through the ages. And the more you learn about the music and the styles can really enhance your listening. I'm looking forward to it! Do post or PM me if you're interested.
  19. Hi Annabel, it is on street level - no steps. And thanks Tillie!
  20. They're beautiful! Love especially the one with the motorbike and the way it's illuminated by the wonderful soft light coming out of the shop!
  21. Hello. I'm just testing the water here. What with the rise and rise of the lovely Classic FM, bringing classical music to the unwashed masses, and the way it has caught on, I'm thinking of hosting an hour of an Introduction to Classical Music. It would begin with an entertaining (I hope!) talk about a particular composer, starting maybe with Vivaldi or even right back to early music, going through to Bach and ending up with Britten or even Schoenberg, followed by musical exerpts on my audiophile stereo system (with B&W speakers and Meridian power and pre-amps and CD player). I have played violin in amateur orchestras, also play the piano and have recently started learning the cello with a lovely East Dulwich cellist at the grand age of 53! So I know my stuff. It would be ?5 per person up to five for the hour, tea, coffee, biscuits or wine included. Would anyone be interested?
  22. Well, there you are. And why not, eh? There are plenty of women's groups, but hardly any men's. Why is that? Men have feelings too, even if they don't always show them. This would be a nice, safe place to say whatever's on your mind. Why not, actually?
