  1. Never feel comfortable having drinks brought to my table. Maybe I'm too traditional. If drinks aren't served immediately - it's rather demeaning to the customer I feel.
  2. But a Club is still not a Tavern IMHO.
  3. The law has to be respected IMHO If the law said 'take him to Peckham Square and thrash him', then I'm OK with that, otherwise we'll end up living in a second Iraq.
  4. KalamityKel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Bon3yard ever tried doing the job yaself? It's > not as easy as it looks ;-) Seem to have improved when trying to get rebates on being charged a ?4 Oystercard fare. First time I tried the lady in Canary Wharf just shouted 'You must touch in and out' ad nauseum - seemed not to realise that some of the equipment might be dodgy. Recently in Canada Water the guy just refunded the ?4 - no questions asked. I'm sure some machines struggle when you have ?2 or less on the card (They take off ?4 then refund the difference on touching out it seems).
  5. Article in the Telegraph about this today http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2008/08/17/sv_photographers.xml&page=1 Seems nobody (including the police) know the law. Relevent part seems to be "The Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) is unequivocal on the matter: 'Police officers may not prevent someone from taking a photograph in public unless they suspect criminal or terrorist intent," I'd think that most of these people are not terrorists or paedophiles.
  6. This debate was going on about a year ago - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1545149/Angry-response-follows-bid-to-ban-photos-in-the-park.html Seems to have gone quiet now except that the law depends on local councils - what does Southwark say ? I think an all or nothing might be appropriate (banning ALL photos in public parks that are not licenced), otherwise nobody knows where they stand (because I have know idea what the law is at the moment).
  7. FHT - not really an appropriate name anymore. They don't want local customers and seem to be a club not a pub. Bouncer outside last night seemed to be operating a dress code too. Depressing.
  8. Words and especially placenames mutate over the years (which deprives us of the original meanings) The street I grew up in was Regit then Regate then Reigate. Regit means stream, some of the older residents use the old term - the council prefers a the latter and encouraged the change if anything.
  9. Can't hear the planes for the traffic living at the top of Peckham Rye. Just get used to it then disappear on business for a while and have to acclimatise again on my return.
  10. Oh thats why the barman stuck a stamp on my hand when I left last time - seemed a band was arriving too - but must have been much too early for the crowds. I thought he was having a party alone at the time :)

    Mortified!

Would one of those large mousetraps they sell on Rye Lane work on a rat. At least you know where the body is.
  12. Please can you be careful if you do cocktails that it doesn't create huge queues at the bar as the bar staff try and make complicated cocktails by following 'recipe' lists (seems to happen a lot now). Gap between The Plough and the rest of LL after the Mag closing.

I just don't see this in London - I saw it in Swansea when I grew up but not here (except where it is part of a belief system - if you know what I mean - and I can't see what can be done about that)
  16. KalamityKel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If he had to ask you how old you were if you were > born in 1982 who really looked a fool? ;-) He couldn't count - thought you were 16. Barmen :)

  18. Don't think theres that huge a difference between the Rye and say the George and Dragon in Shoreditch which is supposed 'official' gay friendly. Don't think anyone would bat an eyelid on LL if two boys or two girls kiss either. Don't think most people would want something like the fort (bermondsey) in ED (that place looks scary to me - but maybe just me :)).
  19. Don't really understand why they have to do this - as the DVLA database issues a fine automatically - doesn't it ? Just increase the automatic fines (if they want to punish more) and make the vans redundant. 20. I've watched them - they pick their stuff up and go home about midnight :) If a real recession hits I will have sympathy (as I do remember the early eighties) Sue Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I know this sounds mean, but it seems odd to me > that they only seem to appear on Friday and > Saturday nights when people are coming out of the > ED pubs, and sit outside Budgens (or sometimes > Somerfield) - where are they the rest of the > time? > > Afraid I tend to agree that it's better to give > money to charities helping the homeless rather > than to individuals - I've been stung too many > times with bad luck stories that in retrospect > were obviously false :-$
  21. Whats that Nick Davies on about - and why is he quoted anyway ? ?Our message is buy now before prices go up again. Property is always the best investment ? you can?t go wrong with it.? macroban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > She's another person who has bought Bulgarian > property.
  22. Pretty sure the banks are investigating all this on the quiet (with the police) but don't feel its much to do with the customer as long as nothing is ever deducted from the account or its re-embursed quickly. Seems that its been going on for a while now without any conclusion. hoolley Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I feel there is some scam going on somewhere. 23. Swansea girl - my home town. The Times seems to like her http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/celebrity/article4223909.ece
  24. Does that mean it might become a boutique !! EDOldie Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > rumour roamer, just overheard, in a pub no less, > Grace & Favour from NCR have bought the Mag. Can > this be true or am I being gullible again? > Probably the latter.

African American is the term in America - but we're not america - but I thought Black was seen as more acceptable today than my parents term of 'coloured' which is very uncorrect now. discussed here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060712105003AAno3vp
