  1. Nice website Dean, quite an extraordinary fellow. Nice pic also John, thats a lovely looking window, less 'cheap' than I thought perhaps. I wonder how/why they didn't follow a symmeterical theme with the building though? Did they want to and run out of money? Or is this a Victorian habit of spending all the oney on the faceade - in this case the LL-face of the library. Or did Eynella road not exist when it was built?
  2. I was sitting in The Plough earlier looking at the library. I was thinking that the wing of the building on Eynella Road was a poor post-ww2 reconstruction following its destruction in the war, but then found this pic http://www.passmoreedwards.org.uk/pages/Libraries/Dulwich.htm that suggests it was a 'cheap' wing originally. Anyway, love the place inside and out, but think it would look amazing with symmetrical wings.
  3. Actually, I'm all for people living in ED who can express opinions calmly, even if I don't agree with them. I'd rather not live around those who are quick to judge and can't challenge an opinion without resorting to swearing and personal abuse.
  4. I'm presuming it was a car of value or higher performance? My b-in-law was was on the end of a nasty car-jack elsewhere in the country for his BMW which was then used soon after in a ramraid.
  5. Never answer the door after 8pm, if it's a friend you'll know they're coming round, otherwise it's someone trying to get money off you. Nobody randomly knocks after 8pm that you want to speak to. Doesn't cover all eventualities but knocks out quite a few unwanted callers.
  6. What helew said. But, Miss P's suggestion that pedestrians stop at zebra crossings is very valid. I get it all the time as a cyclist; people mistake laws with rights and march straight on.
  7. That's a decent manifesto there cs (be sure to completely ignore it when elected like the current westminster shower). Although I asked for mayoral candidates it looks like people want a cabinet. Who wants the transport brief then?
  8. Without wanting to impose too much reality on this, 'local character' can mean someone not on the forum. I was chatting to the Greetings card man earlier and his traffic rant inspired me to think of a Borisesque mouthpiece for the community.
  9. Imagine our glorious leaders decide that local London areas needs Mayors - which local character would you choose to lead us?
  10. From the bbc website Motorist fined Who is it that's being threatening and abusive here? I can't quite see what the motorist did apart from say 'yeah'. And I'm a cyclist.
  11. Don't get scammed. Some useful advice here. http://www.met.police.uk/fraudalert/mass_market_fraud.htm
  12. Aren't the five inch handlebars for getting bikes in and out of city dwellings? I could certainly do with less bars when bringing the bike through my terraced house hallway. What has suprised me a bit about this counting law-breakers thing is there aren't many. By far the majority of cyclists are law abiding.
  13. Well, results are in and the score on the ride home tonight was 11-3. That's 11 geared bikes and 3 single speeds breaking the law. But that was 3/5 single speeds that I saw. I'll repeat this in the morning when all the meeja types are out and about on their singles.
  14. I ride gears, I thought about joining the cool kids once and tried sticking in one gear to see what it was like. Obviously, it was totally unsuited to stop/start riding. I'll do a fair poll tonight on my ride home and count who busts lights/crossings. I'll include my one transgression (i'm not a saint)
  15. I think they should be banned on London streets. My experience of watching other cyclists daily suggests they are responsible for the majority of law-breaking behaviour. The riders are not motivated to stop at lights or zebra crossings as they lose momentum. In doing that they give us all a bad reputation and make other road users more aggressive towards cyclists. Single speed bikes are designed for tracks and should not be allowed on public streets.
  16. I was woken in Landells Road at 5am by what sounded like an air-raid siren, a loud electrical buzzing sound outside that lasted about 20 seconds, I looked out and saw the street lights had gone out and we'd had a brief power cut. It was a bit weird.
  17. An iron age structure would be more likely than a roman one atop a hill. I can't see the point of a roman fort this close to the main settlement north of the river either. I'm unsure if there's ever been a serious excavation though.
  18. 'Est' isn't East though?
  19. 25 minutes by bike, regardless of whether it's 'kick-ass' or not expensive bikes no faster
  20. I went past just before 7 and no workmen but lots of nice water in the road if you want some.
  21. Hey, we got 2 goals and a penalty at old trafford - can't remember the last time that happened.
  22. Just cycled from central via elephant, walworth road, camberwell and ed and the only thing of note was 3 riot vans on whateley road outside the ed police station. No youths, no-one milling around, just shops boarded up.
  23. Sainsburys shut up at the plough, local shops open 10 mins ago but looking understandably edgy.
  24. Just came back through bottom of lyndhurst way with two lines of riot police at the junction with peckham road. Saw lots of hooded yoot around the burgess park area - thought they were heading for walworth road, but maybe heading away from peckham.
