  1. Walked past it tonight...had a look in and decided to try, nice simple pasta/pizza place, there is a really nice terrace at the back, perfect for this weather that has been there through all the restaurants that have been there over the past few years that I didn't know existed ! Upshot is it was very pleasant, staff were lovely & got chatting to owner who is from sicily who was charming and explained all the chefs were from italy and they make the pasta and breads in house. We decided it was a nice place to pop into for a glass of wine with pizza or pasta, menu was devoid of the usual lasagna, spaghetti, and over sauced concoctions you get in the usual bulk standard italians in london, and was mainly fish and vegetable dishes. It's called Sorsi & Morsi (think I got that the right way around) & nice addition to the lane I feel & I like the way it just opened without any fuss or social media fanfare :)
  2. We've got a bumble bee nest under a few rocks at the back of our house, they do not nest in large numbers and you don't see many at a time, they just lazily come and go, I sit at the garden table with a mug of tea and watch them for a little while land like planes on an aircraft carrier in exactly the same place all the time following the same flight path..before they scurry under the rocks, quite relaxing when I get home form work..who needs 3D TV :)
  3. Ps I second the recommendation for garlic chives, I have grown them for the past couple of years in a window box in the back garden and it has a wonderful flavour, and as an added bonus produces beautiful flowers in the late summer :)
  4. I have seen a lot of people in the mornings picking Elderflowers along surrey canal walk, peckham, as I cycle through early in the morning. It seems the new craze. It's gone from not seeing anyone to seeing large groups snapping and branches and breaking of the flowers willy nilly. When a fad like this catches on and people do it in large numbers it can cause a lot of ecological damage to local wildlife, as well as damaging the plants themselves, those flowers are food for pollinating insects ( remember the bee and butterfly population is in sharp decline ) and also the berries are an important source of food for birds and other wild life in the winter. Us humans have a lot of food at hand here in the uk, and do not need to pillage the countryside as well. I can understand people wanting to try their hand at foraging after all the press it has been getting and getting a feel of being connected with nature, but when it becomes a national fad it can do more harm then good.
  5. Sad to see them go..but wish Eric & Margaret all the best for the future...I remember a few years ago we had an horrendous day, heavy rain caused our guttering to overflow and water cascaded through the flat upstairs & through our bedroom ceiling, which partially collapsed, we had already been to the restaurant a couple of times, and after an evening of surveying the damage to our home we thought "sod it ! lets get out of here for a bit" & headed there, we had a lovely bottle of red & nice dinner, while Eric & Margaret listened to our woes and made us feel generally looked after & we went home a lot happier and ready to get on with sorting the damage out :)
  6. I wish I had read this yesterday, had no idea until we sailed passed rye lane and was eventually dropped off near Morrisons...if you spotted someone panting and in near need of CPR at the station this morning, it was me after running/stumbling, still half a sleep, so I didn't miss my train ( which I didn't as this was the only time I have ever been pleased it was late) *sets alarm a lot earlier for the morning*
  7. To be fair the leaving of locks by cyclists at a place they go to all the time is a pretty common practice, having cycled for over 15 years I notice it a lot, usually where I have worked. I don't leave mine as I use it a lot..for example if I stop off to get some shopping on way home. Sometimes, in rare cases people use it to "reserve a space" I know this as when I have used a rack with a lock attached when there are no other empty ones I have been challenged, once by a cyclist who arrived while I was there saying "it's his space" & one time I had a note stuck to my saddle...mostly though people just leave them for convenience. In this case wether the leaving of locks is criminal damage or not ...and as even some of the staff seem to leave locks too, the management should have put up a notice before removing in the name of good customer relations & if they do not want people to leave locks should have a permanent notice saying so & that locks will be removed if they do. Ps This thread getting mental like most threads do on here in the end *waits to get trolled* :)
  8. More then 10 minutes this lunch time, was stuck on East Dulwich road for ages right up by the junction with crystal palace road, then more traffic queing right past barry road coming down forest hill road, seems the road going down towards rye lane is closed today. there seemed to be a guy manually operating the lights form a box on a trailer by the time I eventually got to them, at one point he missed letting the traffic I was in going through, most frustrating. Very rammed round that part of the rye so would avoid today.
  9. I live right by where the works are being carried out There were notices on the front gates last year and on the gates on Langton rise/woodvale with the names of the graves which were to be covered & asking anyone who was related or knows of the families involved to contact the council. I am assuming (hoping) this is because they had tried all other channels and were making sure the graves still didn't have any visitors still. I walked passed the Area a lot as i walk through sometimes to get to forest hill road, I didn't notice many graves in that area, and the few I did see looked very old and neglected. I thought it was sad they had to destroy some of the trees though, clearing something living for the dead ;/ I think this is common practice though, My grandparents graves in hertfordshire from the 1990's have a 50 yr "Expiry date" I think a clause in the contract says that if no relatives come forward at that time to renew them they will be reused.
  10. How Horrible, only a couple of weeks ago one of Our neighbours averted another neighbours house being broken into by tackling two youths behaving suspiciously and calling police, police caught the look out, but let him off as he "hadn't committed an offense" even though their was a witness. doesn't sound like the same people though as theses guys didn't try and smash anything were & being tentative. this lot sound right aggressive :/ We Live on the same end of Underhill near Melford road.
  11. I had a look at the sign and noticed t said it reopens at 5am...well someone should tell the drivers as the 63 went passed a load of other people after 7am again yesterday morning, really frustrating for them.
  12. I got on the 63 by the forest hill Tavern yesterday morning at 7.20 am, And it sailed past a lot of people with their hands out at the Dunstans stop, felt really bad for them, have they got a sign up to let people know when its shut and when it opens ?
  13. I've had mine knocked off twice on Underhill rd, once by the P13 trying to squeeze past a car that had stopped the other side of the road to let it pass, but was practically on the white line. (My car wasn't sticking out either, my scrapped hub cabs are a testimony to how close to the kerb I try to get) The 2nd time I think must have been kids or someone, as it was on the pavement side... I now fold my mirrors in every evening, expensive lesson learnt by me. Ps I got no joy off bus company as driver denied it happened or didn't actually notice, and was cheaper to get it repaired myself rather then go through insurance with excess etc. *sigh*
  14. well the more the merrier I say I love... them both :)
  15. Haha love it ! especially the "old villa" bit...Is this the same person who writes the "gays of south London" blog ? they are pretty much the same style ...Love that too :)
  16. We had a letter from the police put through our door from the police, as did all our neighbours on Underhill road, stating their had been an increase in burglaries in our area And warning us to be vigilant. So I think its unfair to to berate someone on the forum for voicing concerns when the local police also feel their is a reason to be mindful of the threat.
  17. This is hideous & follows a low key media campaign by the government to demonise ALL people on benefits so they can get public support for these ill thought out polices. I have a friend who is bipolar Who I used to work with who is desperate to work, but his illness prevents him but he still tries, & I lost a family member a few years ago to suicide through mental health issues who would have been affected by this if she was still around. For a Government to make light of a condition that makes it hard for people to function is just ridiculous in the 21st century. I hope you find some help in the advice from the people that have posted above.
  18. We used to use a door to door fish man years ago for a long time, think it was called pauls or something like that. fish was fine and good quality, but stopped as it was getting pricy
  19. Complete chaos at 7am this morning, as temp lights failed & were stuck on red in Peckham rye with traffic backing up to forest hill road. Bus driver told us we should get off as we weren't going anywhere, so had to run to Peckham rye station to catch my train. Unfortunately cafe in station didn't sell the oxygen I needed when I got there.
  20. Was terrible this morning, I get the 363 from Woodvale/langton rise, left early as I know what its like when there are works on that junction from times before. Thought allowing 40 minutes for what would normally be a 10-15 min journey to Peckham rye station would be adequate, but no, still missed my train, & this was at 7 am this morning ! I saw some scary driving too which is worrying when you think of the schools near by, especially frustrated drivers running the zebra crossing when people were waiting to cross :/
  21. The draft house was closed too. Was meeting a friend that night there and he text me to say that and the plamerston was shut. He was told the draft house was closing straight after he was served a pint and had 4 minutes to drink it ...lucky thats all it takes for him usually ;)
  22. I find the notion of drivers taking more risk if you wear a helmet strange, as a driver also it makes no odds to me, I give a wide berth when I see someone on a bike if they are wearing one or not, as a cyclist it was near misses that drove me to wear a helmet in the first place , especially the driver who passed so close Their wing mirror flew off as he hit my handle bar, as I was then sent sprawling onto the pavement in borough one time, just stopping my head from hitting the ground. I got my first helmet soon after that.
  23. I have cycled for almost 15yrs around london, & I would not get on my bike without a helmet, no it won't protect you from being run over by a car or lorry (not even a suit of armor would) but it doesn't take a lot to damage the brain from an impact to the head from the height of falling off a bike. I know of someone (one of my sisters work colleagues) who suffered blood clots on his brain due to banging the side of his head on the kerb as he fell off his bike after having braked suddenly, he had two major ops to remove them. (a helmet would have reduced the impact and prevented this he was told) And a fellow cyclist I know lost control and went over his handle bars head first into a lampost near the park in camberwell, he had mild concussion, but could have been a lot worse with out his helmet which cracked under the impact. I think it should be up to the individual to wear one or not, we are all as adults responsible for our own safety (though I do feel young children should wear them at all times) I am glad the lady in the accident is ok, I see so many accidents on my commute, Cyclists & motorists need to look out for each other more and have some common sense, I see stupid risks on both sides regularly on my travels sadly :/
  24. I've used it for 3 years as I work in Kentish town ...It's normally fine, but does get affected in winter, even when it hasn't been snowing, been delayed by 10-14 mins so far this week & some days last week. So have a back up plan. I now use the invaluable Uk train times App on my phone on the bus to the station, it follows the train on its route and I can see if its been cancelled or badly delayed, if it has I stay on the bus and go to the Elephant and get the tube. PS If you get on the train after it's been delayed for more then 12-14 minutes, keep an ear out for announcements. If its too delayed, once it gets to St Pancras it will go fast to St Albans & Luton missing out all other stations. Had my earphones on once and missed the announcement & could only gaze in bewilderment as train sped through Kentish town all the way to St Albans.
  25. OH so sorry to read this. My car was tagged at the same time as some of my neighbors a while ago on underhill, we all had the word "VEX" scratched into our bonnets by some scumbag, and my car is an old banger, felt even more sorry for my neighbors who had much more expensive cars then mine, sometimes its just mindless indiscriminate vandalism :/
