  1. I'm voting to leave. I have always been sceptical anyway, but hearing Lord Mandelson cosy upto Cameron on Newsnight during the week was my tipping point. Phrases such as 'gravy train' may seem over used to some, but for me and my generation who voted yes first time around, the whole thing continually stinks of undemocratic bureaucracy. For me, it isn't just a matter of flag waving jingoism, it's about giving back to the working people the voice and chance to choose their own destiny. The EU prevents this country from controlling so many aspects of day-to-day life. Endless red tape for small business and workers. If Cameron had returned with a total overhaul of the lack of democracy in this organisation, I would have been the first to stand up and support the deal. He hasn't done that. He's returning to the UK with a few irrelevant (to most people's lives) paper pushing finite details. Cameron, is part of the political elite, he wants us to carry on this path so he and his buddies have a career after domestic politics. It's all so wrong. Get out of the EU and give our workers the opportunity to be free again. Louisa.
  2. Yes rd, a terraced property, and this is what I thought too. He didn't check the roof he just had a quick look but didn't seem overly interested if I'm being honest. The dampness is appearing in all top floor rooms including bedrooms and bathroom and only in the top corners and along the external walls. Doesn't appear to be anything from outside inspection of the roof but of course I know nothing about this sort of thing. Myself and mr Louisa have been very chesty and feeling under the weather as a result (we believe) of this mould. I can't reach high enough to wipe all of it away but the vast majority had gone with a quick wipe. Louisa.
  3. I have had possibly the worst few weeks of my life. A persistent mould issue in my property has lead to myself and mr Louisa becoming rather sick with chest related symptoms/infection. Can someone please advise me on the best route to take in the removal of mould? I was advised by a builder that ventilation is the best way to prevent it forming, but in winter this doesn't seem practical. The mould is all upper bedrooms of the property at the very top of the walls/ceilings. I have used step ladders to remove most of it but it just seems to reform within a week sometimes less. I have tried leaving windows open when not at home but they don't really make much difference.never previously had this problem, so firstly could someone advise what is causing it? And secondly, how can I stop it coming back? Louisa.
  4. Great to see Tracy Chapman being brought to a new generation with this recent cover and chart success of her song "fast car". She is a talented and yet down to earth gracious artist, who has provided us with so many modern classics. Louisa.
  5. I think Loz just bagged the knock out blow right there. Louisa.
  6. This is my contribution to a series of noise related threads which have been covered on the forum in recent months. Antisocial behaviour stemming from noise is of course terrible especially when you have young kids who need their sleep. Would it be possible that if in future people have a genuine concern about pubs, commercial and residential premises making excess noise into the early hours, that they contact either the person/business themselves to see if they can resolve the matter peacefully and if no joy contact the Southwark noise team and provide them with the information they need. Does this sound fair enough? I'm sure many people are becoming a little tired with the constant (and excessive) flow of angry posts pointing fingers and blaming others for noise, and achieving very little. Put simply, all you have to do is act upon it. No big deal. I know the forum is a great place to discuss things and get your point across, but I don't think it's fair to point out specific businesses and people without going through the normal channels first. London is a big city, it's a noisy place, I'm sure we can all live side by side without bitterness regarding noise. Louisa.
  7. Mon Petit Chou was the old Binnister toy shop. It was there between about 1988 and 2000 or so. Louisa.
  8. binnister toys, where that posh coffee/sandwich place is. I remember Zodiac toy shop on the corner opposite Clarke's shoes. Louisa.

Soup and salad mixed are not uncommon in far eastern cuisine, particularly in Thailand and Malaysia. Fusion cuisine has often matched up bread and wraps with soup and salad. In theory it could easily be done, but perhaps the soup would have to be of a thicker 'stew' like consistency. Louisa.
  10. Not especially on this issue, but in general, the middle classes do tend to have a sense of entitlement, which is exasperating to everyone else. I was personally gutted when Woolies closed down, lots of items I enjoyed buying, and a great addition to Peckham where lots of people bought the Ladybird clothing brand for their kids (because it was value for money). They closed due to a failing business model, deeply unfortunate but yeah you get where I'm coming from. From reading all the background information on this, I still fail to see how the loss of one branch of a business with a portfolio of four shops (one just up the road) will be a great loss to Herne Hill? It's a brisk walk from Herne Hill to the ED store which will no doubt be a lot busier now. We can't control market forces as individuals, and to suggest we should start petitions screams of middle class entitlement to me. We've lost a lot of things in ED thanks to gentrification, that's not going to change if I start a petition. There's also a lot of other stuff going on in the world, as I previously said. Louisa.

Ah yes I see your point now. Usually these soup things work out of mobile portakabin's don't they? It seems a bit of a silly business move to take on a commercial unit in a high rental location, for what is pretty much just, well, soup and salad. I read a fascinating article in the Mail Online back on November about expensive puddings in Scotland. People travel from all over the world to pay ?30 plus for high end desserts. Maybe a high end soup filled with oysters and caviar could work? Louisa.

?35 for a bowl of soup sounds ridiculously high. Once all the fanfare has passed, and the number of customers begin to dwindle prices will fall and inevitably the shop won't be able to afford to continue. Daylight robbery, the most I've paid for a bowl of soup in a restaurant is 3.95 at the beefeater. Louisa.
  13. DulwichFox Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi Lou... > > Just hope it manages to blend in with all the > chicken carcasses and fish heads... > > Locally resoursed produce.. ? > > Foxy I have a feeling looking at the planning pages for Rye Lane, many of the chicken, meat and fish shops will soon enough be confined to the past. The number of returbs and changes of use applications coming in to the council seem to suggest hyper gentrification, and from what is quite a low base in Peckham too. We will see. And yes mancity68 this new boozer is part of the antic pub group that owns 'the hope' and EDT. Louisa.
  14. Interesting point foxy. It's certainly in a good location and will re-direct and possibly increase footfall from the starion up Rye Lane of an evening. Particularly so as a few doors along from here a new chain restaurant is set to open this year, 'Turtle Bay', which will give people a reason to head in this direction. Let's just hope this all inclusive a deep clean of the streets in front of these places. Louisa.
  15. I'm prepared to give any business a chance. 'John the Unicorn' is brought to Peckham by the same owners of EDT so I'm thankful for a new boozer locally and wish it every success. Whether it's my 'cup of tea' is another matter, of course. Louisa.
  16. I love Peckham, I grew up there. I do think it needs an overhaul and tidy up, and that process is in motion right now so let's see what happens. Rye Lane is shit yeah, awful in fact. What I find patronising is estate agents giving areas these made up names for one purpose and one purpose only. It's annoying. Louisa.
  17. Dulwich Village is a historical name. This was a village long before London consumed it. Bellenden Village is a made up thing by estate agents to make posh 'do me uppers' feel good about the fact they invested in an otherwise shit area (in their eyes). Louisa.
  18. Peckham is Peckham. Estate agent drivel to re-brand existing neighborhoods with ridiculous names is a way of encouraging gentrification and super house price inflation. It sub divides communities unnecessarily. The short walk between Bellenden RD and Rye Lane may as well be a 8 hour flight from Heathrow. 20/30 years ago that was not the case. So yes, Bell End Village is more appropriate in my eyes. Louisa.
  19. Bell End Village would be more appropriate. Louisa.

I'm thinking of setting up my own retro 70's drinks stall on GG Saturday afternoons. Snowballs with glazed cherries, babychams (served in vintage bottles). Ahh the hipsters will flock to it, "what are these artisan street drinks the working classes used to drink? Maybe if we drink them we can be even more ironically cool" And yes I'll charge triple market price. Louisa.

How about a cereal cafe and somewhere that specialises in organic artisan popcorn of various flavours? Louisa.
  22. There is also another branch at Clapham South on Balham Hill. Louisa.
  23. TSB and Lloyds de-merged as part of a government settlement following the sell off of public assets in the bank. TSB is now a seperate entity from Lloyds entirely. Louisa.
  24. > > JoeLeg Wrote: > > > -------------------------------------------------- > " > They're a pointless food article regardless. No > flavour or taste, just an excuse for people to > pontificate the imagined exclusivity of the > process in which you consume these things." YES they are a pointless food article, that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. YES it is an excuse for SOME people to pontificate and boast about why they consume them, not saying that's wrong, but it is ONE of the reasons SOME people eat them IMO. > " an imagined branding exercise in which people > want to believe that certain food types are more > exclusive than others" YES some people do want to believe they are more exclusive things to buy and eat and consume them for those reasons. Still failing to see any inconsistency here? Louisa.
  25. JoeLeg Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > NOW you're suggesting that - you weren't before. > So no, not 100% consistent. Can you please point out where I wasn't suggesting that before? I've read through FOUR pages and am yet to see the point at which I did so. Therefore, yes I am 100% consistent. Louisa.
