That is what I understand to have happened. The DE land is almost all universally in conservation areas. So huge duplication of intent and actions with Southwark Council. Shame they can't end the duplication. The DE does appear to operate a second Council Tax system with no discernible benefits - because almost all the land is in conservation ares severely limiting what residents etc can do. I also share your concerns about the Dulwich Hospital site and any school. Southwark Council have just issued a new document where they could have removed their plans for the site from 2005 which include lots of housing. Very fishy.

Hi Stephent, The Dulwich Estate refused to agree the playing fields to be included in any lease for the buildings. Better a school than no school but outrageous perspective on fulfilling the founders intent. They put a clause in the lease banning the school from talking about this fact. A gagging order. The majority of its funds subsidise private schools. In this case at the expense of virtually no outdoor space for state school children. How can you defend any of their behaviour over this? I can;t imagine any parents of kids at those private schools feeling anything other than queasy about this - hence the gagging order.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

Hi edanna, How terrifying. I hope your child hasn't been completely freaked out. We had a similar experience and it was several days before our nerves were no longer frayed. I have applied to use Cleaner, Greener, Safer funds to install average speed cameras on Barry Road. It is the road with the most prolific speeding. We're nearly 300% over subscribed so not yet clear which application we'll fund. And average sped cameras wouldn't guarantee anything but it would eliminate 999% of speeding. But perhaps the nutter who buzzed you is in the 0.1%. If you have any other ideas for improving things please let me know. Do you think the crossing is lit enough after dark for example? Hi joom, I don't know and will try and find out. Hi MarkT, Several year is more than two years I'm afraid. The SSDM is clearly not fit for purpose. It demands we use granite for new paving but the granite is imported from Chinas - so about as climate unfriendly as you could get in terms of CO2 emissions. We're not allowed to use fake UK manufactured fro building waste granite. You could not make this up. Hi tiddles, I agree. replacing single white lines with pairs of yellow lines increases rather than decreased street clutter. Perhaps the person producing it was colour blind! Hi PGC, Are you free this afternoon? -

Council officers have just sent Dulwich councillos a spreadsheet with all the Cleaner, Greener, Safer applications. Please see attached. Do tell me the project you think most important. Delighted to see College ward councillors have applied for funding to run projects we did in East Dulwich years ago - property marking kits, noticeboard, etc. Better late than never ! We just need Village ward councillors to do the same... -
Hi tomdhu, That is a lot of money. A slight injury in theround costs society ?14,611 (2011 figures), serious injury ?189,519, death ?1.69m. http://www.makingthelink.net/tools/costs-child-accidents/costs-road-accidents The life of a well designed junction should be 25-50 years. So yes a lot of money but potentially cheap if it reduces the chances of catastrophic serious injury or death or even slight injuries over a lnog period of time. Which is why it is so important that this time we all get the design right.

Council has a document about H-bars (white lines): http://www.southwark.gov.uk/download/downloads/id/8732/ds_007_h-bar_markings It appears to have been approved 8 May 2013. Let me work out under what governance this occurred. Eitherway I have asked the cabinet member to reconsider this aspect. -

Hi ITATM, middle of this year Sotuhwark Council Cabinet formally adopted a street design manual. Part of that includes no longer allowing new white lines across dropped kerbs. People have the choice of no white line or double yellow lines. I think the matter has been debated hear to death. We need Southwark Council to changes it mind on this. Are you willing to lead a deputation to a Council Assembly to request a change to this policy? I have formally asked for the cabinet member to reconsider and revise this manual to revert back to the previous policy and await his reponse. -
Scheme makes front page of the Dulwich SLP edition. For transparency for a number of years I was a member of the Dulwich Safer Routes to School Group and chair of Sotuhwark Cyclists. And still a member of London Cycling Campaign/Southwark Cyclsits and Living Streets/Sotuhwark Living Streets. I think the scheme is good but the Townley Road reduction from two to one lane and banned right turn is wrong. I also think the Townley Road red light jumping is already a problem and red light cameras required to deter this.

This scheme, along with Gallery Road new pelican crossing and proposed Paxton Green roundabout changes, are expected to be presented by council officers and discussed in public at the 28 January Dulwich Community Council meeting. I have asked if a venue with good publci transport links for residents from all three scheme area can be found. I have suggested the venue and dates being checked. Fingers crossed.

Couldn't agree more. In trying to be a brilliantly run charity I think they've focus on what the original benefactor would have expected. -

Some road closures next week and the weekafter - please see attached. Melbourne Grove at its junction East Dulwich Grove - 24->28 November & 1-5 December. One is the northern side and the other the southern side of this junctino being closed. The notice just states both being on northern side. I've asked for clarification. Hillsboro Road at its junction with East Dulwich Grove - 1->12 December. I've asked if this could be delayed until the Christmas School holidays to avoid so many children beign affected. -

ED Picturehouse - When will it open?
James Barber replied to Reg Smeeton's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I spoke to the people working on the site earlier today. They aid mid to late January is the new date they are working towards They added that more problems than were expected. I could see a lot of very large steel girders on the ground waiting to be raised and placed. so even mid/late January seems optimistic to me. -

I'd presume so but that could be a rash assumption. Let me find out. Generally, I'd encourage residents to contact the Police Safer Neighbourhood Team and ask for a crime prevention home visit. Cllr Rosie Shimell and I have insured they have lots and lots of free crime prevention kit to give away. Bike locks, property marking kits, etc. Most recent addition to the armoury is floor anchors for motorbikes and bicycles. -
I'm sorry reshamkotecha but your analysis of Lambeth Council debt is flawed. That debt is made of two comments - Housing Revenue Account debt ring fenced and paid for from council rents and general fund which is tiny. You can't mix the two and you can't say general council tax is used to pay for council housing debt it isn't.

Hi BNG, Don't think so. I pointed people to the ww.crashmap.co.uk website so they could look themself at crashes and draw their own conclusion. This particular junction doesn't have a high crash rate despite the very large volumes and children and vehicles using it. But the council have proposed some big changes to make it much easier to use and hoepfully safer - both for people walking and cycling. Removing the cattle pens is a good step forward. I would suggest that the safety is really helped by having both School Crossing Patrols. I am concerned that they'll be dropped by Village ward councillors with any new junction design being completed on the ground.

After receiving some casework asking about this issue I contacted the school. I've just spotted this thread and thought the answers helpful. In my own words I was told. Harris East Dulwich Boys Academy is now just over 5 years old. Lower than normal staff turnover during that period as the school grew and obtained amazing GCSE results this year. This year it has experienced higher staff turnover. Why? London housing costs - London schools generally have higher staff turnover but this school had lower staff turnover until now. Teachers who have helped create a successful outstanding school with it first GCSE results are much in demand in places with lower housing costs. Many of the people that have left have gone for promotions. They expect this to settle down and do not expect any lowering of standards. I felt reassured by this.

Hi BNG, I beg to differ. The current junction isn't that safe. Hence the need for two School Crossing Patrols. I think the Townley right turn should be kept BUT from my experiences that movement appears the most likely to have red light jumpers. I suspect that's part of the reasoning to ban it. A simpler method would be a red light digitial camera added to the proposals to deter this behaviour. Hi tomdhu, If I recall correctly you are particularly concerned by no.37 buses westbound along EDG and reduction from two lanes to one lane on the eastern side of the junction for westbound vehicles. Again during rushhour this morning vertually no one except me use the right turn lane into Greendale. It's used so little that I can't see removing it making a material difference.

Southwark Council proposals for LL/NthX Rd junction
James Barber replied to maxxi's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi firstmate, You are wrong. The kerb buildouts will align with the parked cars. So effectively no narrowing of Lordshiop Lane but instead of dead tarmac cars can't use it will be replaced with pavement space that pedestrians can use. I agree the cycle parking is excessive. I think officers are proposing this to block people crossing away from the pelican crossing. Please give that feedback to the consultation as I have done. Hi LKR, At least we'll resolve this junction now. Hi Charles Notive, Yes bicycles are rarely good to look at. But the cycel parknig is designed to avoid fly cycle parking which looks even worse and can onstruct people walking etc easilly. -
Hi tomdhu, ZDT, I think you were talknig at cross purposes. East bound slong East Dulwich Grove the current two lanes remain two lanes on the western side of the junctin as now. The westbound two lanes are reduced to two. But very few vehicles use the right hand lane to turn right into Greendale so I'm sure it is some capacity reduction it must ber marginal. Saying that sometimes long tail back along EDG currently. The big issue for me is the Townley Road banned right turn for what appears a duplicate reason for the southbound cyclsits to get a head start on the main green light phase. Both aren't needed. I've asked for this scheme to be reviewed by the Dulwich Community Council to ensure a publci meeting people can express views. Although an East Dulwich ward councillor and this scheme is Village ward it would as planned displace vehicles into East Dulwich ward.
