Olly Murs: I shouldn't, but I would.

Crazy woman left because she didn't want to be another Wagner apparently (I saw it on the interweb somewhere, please note, not in Heat magazine). What I hate about this programme is the idea that this is all they have in the world. Music is their WHOLE LIFE, but they've never written a song, or sung live, or joined a band in their WHOLE LIVES, but it's everything, it really, truly is. And that their day jobs at which they work hard (or don't) are meaningless and somehow demeaning, whereas pawning their ass for a set of new teeth and the chance to be found wanting by 8 million people every week is an uplifting life chance. Wake up suckers, you could be the next Joe McElderry. Anyway, as I say, I'm looking forward to the live rounds. Especially now Dr Who has finished.

Actually maxxi, have just noticed (how could I have missed?) the very fabulous Killer Dyke book cover, and believe me, if I owned a copy of that, I'd turn it into a dust jacket to cover my every read. It's ossom. However, I am reading Skippy Dies, which I am loving. Although the stuff on M theory means little to me, rather like same on the science thread. The hwever book made me want to go away and read about M theory, as it sounded interesting. The science thread has made me not want to.

Yes, it's a very sad day. Of late I didn't get down to the Sun and Doves nearly as much as I used to: moving from Camberwell to ED, it stopped being so local. But I have many, many glorious memories of the place: barbecues and broken hearts and making friends and and showing off. It took me from university to impending middle age, not least a spectacular birthday party this June at Magnificent 7s. Gutted that it's going, but Mark, I applaud your efforts on PPP and would be very interested to hear more about it. I once worked on a campaign about putting pubs back at the heart of the community, but it quickly became apparent that the brand I was working for couldn't give a flying f*ck, and it was all about increasing beer sales. It would be good to see something positive come out of your awful experience. Best of luck, and keep us posted.

I like the green tiddlywinks they give you. I've got 50 now, so enough for a game I think.

You know what, that really really pisses me off. Political correctness??????????? James, can you honestly tell me that you have EVER been to a bonfire where the meaning of Guy Fawkes and parliament and Catholicism and Protestantism was on the agenda? I mean ever? It's a bloody party. Has been all my years. Bobbing for apples. Parkin. Sparklers. Sneaking off and kissing boys in the bushes. Maybe it wasn't at first, you know, 400 years ago. But it is now, and that's all it is. And to sound off about political correctness is just cynical politicking of the worst kind to get middle englanders in a froth and divert attention from the fact that your leader has sold middle england a pup. Poor.

Huggers, I don't understand what you're so up in arms about. Are you expected, having parked your car and paid for the voucher, and correctly displayed it, to return to the car every five minutes to inspect whether such an occurance has in fact occurred? As you say the ticket was face down and on the seat. Is the warden expected to use x-ray vision to read the reverse of any piece of paper he sees on a car seat on the offchance it could be a parking voucher and that it bears the correct time? You suggest he may have deliberately knocked it off the windscreen (rather invalidating your hurricane rationale) and your friend called him a cunt. He was doing his job. Turns out on this occasion you did have a valid ticket, and on appeal the fine was dropped. But how on earth was he supposed to know that? I'll never understand why otherwise rational and lovely people get so mental about parking wardens.
-
Hey Hughie, I didn't think it was sneery on Katie's part. Doesn't strike me as her modus operandi, being the sunny wee thing she is and all. I do actually know a few people who read New Scientist to sound clever. Well, when I say New Scientist, I mean their twitter thread. But I liked what you said about its being "full of hope". It is that. And I am that today. There are good things to be discovered.
-
I read New Scientist for stories about bonobos, chimps at a push. I'd estimate 1 in 3 issues carries such awesomeness. Mockers is right, monkey science IS fun. Sometimes I'm rewarded with other interesting and exciting and fun stuff. Other times it's full of things I can't and have no inclination to understand. Rather like Heat magazine. Hurray for science.

Anyone know of a decent place to stay in Manchester...

Try Great John Street for boutique action, or the Malmaison at Picadilly's nice (and unlike the one in Liverpool, doesn't resemble a scene from Hotel Babylon). Radisson Edwardian isn't bad also. Midland, great for a treat and / or romance - lots of adulterous couples up to sexy business. Didsbury House is lovely, but it's miles out if you want to stagger back to the hotel after the show. -
I like Iceland. I like Vimto and their coconut milk is half the price of that in Sainsbury's and their crumpets are dead cheap and if ever I fancy fish fingers they're good and toilet roll is often on special offer. I like Waitrose. I like rillettes (no other major multiple seems to stock it and when the deli did it was ?6 for a jar), and they make good pies and their figs are currently half price and their prepared food is usually (though not always) nicer tasting than Sainsbo's or Tesco. I also like big butts and I cannot lie.
