Lets hear it for Gestational Diabetes....!
buggie replied to buggie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
ElmGrove - would be good, but guessing their mixed with milk which could be problematic due to the sugars :( (plus not Snowboarder - will look up brewer diet, annoyingly I can't stand hard boiled eggs (I know, I'm impossible!). Luckily have found some pancetta in the fridge so getting bit more flavour tomorrow :) Am almost looking forward to insulin to bring a bit more choice back to breakfast!! -
...or maybe not! I've found out I've been lucky enough to have gestational diabetes again. Was wondering if anyone else is in the same position at the moment? Annoyingly I'm not doing bad during the day, but am having high end of ok readings first thing - if anyone has any ideas of no carb breakfasts - am sooo bored of omelettes already! (weirdly I can tolerate carbs a few hrs later so have a carby snack mid morning to catch up!) Also, if anyone has experience of being under kings & using insulin, an idea of what they prescribed/how it went for you would be v useful as its likely I'm not going to be able to just manage it with diet this time. Thanks in advance x

You should have contact details for the HV in your red book so don't need to go via surgery to speak to them x

High fibre diets can cause constipation in younger children - while avoiding extra bran is v good, it might be worth checking on balance how high the fibre content is as up to 5yrs or so they can't digest fibre as well as we can and thus can have problems. If not wanting to go down a medical route, then surely you're health visitor would be a more suitable first port of call - either via child health clinic or by telephone - as under fives are their speciality, would say their in much better position to advise and much more likely to have up to the minute advice than a GP.

Might be worth looking at Sensatori Tenerife - all inc with few different pools (inc kids one with a pirate ship!) and really good kids show every evening as well as kids clubs/nursery which gave us a few child free hrs a day. We went in June & were very happy with it - thinking of going again next year when we'll be a family of 4 - bugglet was 2.75yrs and still talks about going to "ten-efe" :-)

Decorating bedrooms for toddlers / children (advice please)

That looks fab Gina :-) Also watching with interest as we're getting a "big girl bedroom" ready for bugglet (exciting BH w/e of polyfila & painting coming up!) -

That's my pet hate - I sometimes try & give them a chirpy wave wi a big grin plastered over my (gritted teeth). Benchley Gardens is really bad - despite it being a 20 limit for the majority of it, I often see cars doing 50+, had one charming guy give me the finger for shaking my head in disbelief at his speed a few wks back (was waiting to turn out of Kelvington Rd).

buggie replied to Samanthalouise's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yup, if you give them a call, they can arrange stone you can visit & give you their prospectus/application form. Unsure, but pretty sure there might be a waiting list, but its a good time of year to find out (leavers starting school means a fair bit of movement). -

Like Fuschia & Number 2, I love Puddleduck. Bugglet has been there for nearly a year and is thriving. The team are great & feel communication to parents is really good & their always letting you know what your child has been up to/how they are getting on. -

Was with Mr Buggie in Palmerston for my birthday meal and the lairy group were there the whole time... Is weird how worrying it is when blokes start slapping each others arms & kissing each other they can still look like a fights about to kick off! Very unrelaxing but nothing the staff could do (think it would've caused it all to kick off).

I remember being told proudly by the midwife (having just got into labour ward) that I'd be holding my baby in the next 5 hours, "FIVE HOURS?!" Was my reply between lungfuls of G&A. With my next contraction I said I thought I could feel the "ring of fire" and the MW was surprised that instead of being the poo she'd warned me it most likely was, the head really was there. Her estimate was rapidly revised to me holding my baby in the next hour and she then only just made it back to my side of the bed (I was stood beside the bed) with the next contraction to catch Bugglet - half hour after I arrived! (Had been having contractions since the morning before/overnight at home!). With No2 over halfway cooked, I'm trying to work out how likely an even speedier arrival is!

Urgent request for free legal advise for bulge classes
buggie replied to helenholden's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Helenholden; while I can understand you're point of view, what do you think should be done for the ?30+ children who don't currently have a reception place so that your children can have the school experience you were expecting? I can't see how any LA or school takes the issue of bulging lightly, and am sure if the effect on schools was *that* detrimental there would've been countless threads about it on here as each ED school has bulged at least once in the last 5yrs. -
Relate to this a lot, felt very abandoned by friends when Bugglet arrived and as Bugglet got older found myself with the time available to go out, but unable to find anyone wanting a night out with me - causing many tears and frustration. However, have found in the last 18mths things have improved considerably, I made a few friends via the W. Dulwich Bumps & Babes group and have found despite my best mummy mate moving out to Surbiton we've been able to keep our (and our girls) friendship going. Plus, finding a really good activity (in my case hummy mummies) has further widened my friends network and given me some fab nights out with a great bunch of friends. I still morn the friendships that have dwindled, especially those which I've done a lot of running around to try and keep going but to no avail. But having found a great hobby and made brill friends through it I'm in a much happier place than I was.

Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
buggie replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
James - it's snared earlier in the thread... The current government doesn't allow LA's to open new schools (that Michael Gove is a darling isn't he?!). Much as I'm not against academies (least said on free schools the better), Ivydale is my nearest primary school, all of my neighbours children attend/have attended & thrived, so would rather see a well established school incorporate the site than have to dip into the unknown. -
When I worked in A&E I had the brother of a patient recognise me and tell me that I'd seen him when he'd cut his finger, but it was going on holiday to Sardinia that had made it better!

Have you checked with the per-school, I thought the 15hrs had to be taken over 3 days. Also, the 15hrs is based on a school year, so if the preschool is open more weeks per year than school, then it will be less than 15hrs a week that you get.

ADT - Cold Calling - Has anyone else had this?
buggie replied to Rednaic's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Had them knock the other day & realised I had the perfect deterrent... Opened door and said "sorry got toddler on potty, can't talk" and quickly shut door before said toddler came out v obviously not on the potty! -
Am I making a horrible mistake? (Newborn naps)
buggie replied to Emski's topic in The Family Room Discussion
True enough, & I'd never suggest bad habits being formed so early, and as reported by the OP it comes across as overbearing & unsolicited, but none of us know the full context of the conversation OP & HP had, thus my defensive hat! -
Am I making a horrible mistake? (Newborn naps)
buggie replied to Emski's topic in The Family Room Discussion
To be fair (and as one of those "health professionals" - albeit not a HV *yet*), would like to show my thoughts/experiences shaping this. If parents are truly happy with their child's sleep pattern/how they get them to sleep then all is fine, but we do see a lot of what would be "when sleep habits go wrong" (if it were a naff itv2 programme!) parents stressed that they can't break cycles/don't know how to settle apart from the babies falling asleep on them through day & night & these are normally much older babies/the absolute extremes where Mum & Dad are barely sleeping because of this & they need practical advice/support before they reach collapse. Am sure most people, if could see a friend or colleague taking a path that could lead to future difficulties would maybe proffer some advice/support wouldn't they? I'm not saying that the whole way it was handled was correct, but surely it can be seen the advice wasn't malevolent? Also, I've seen problems when babies or Mums have been admitted to hospital and the normal routine has had to go out of the window - as Suddenly Dad's settling the baby or parents have had to pop home etc & as a nurse settling babies I didn't have the option of feeding to sleep/letting them nap on me (had to be ready to respond to emergencies), but with care and tenderness could settle babies to sleep, so know when it has to be done, it can be done. Find it odd that when different posters on here express different opinions while debated, there's always a bit of respect about where their coming from, however, health professionals seem fair game to deride & have their experience/knowledge base questioned (despite in the community, having caseloads bigger than the entire family room readership so an even wider view than often seen on here). Sorry if this sounds chippy (I don't mean it to, honest!). My personal feeling on baby Emski would be that it's likely a phase, if you want napping in the buggy to be an option, then maybe try it occasionally, but, if you're gut instinct is that you're managing well otherwise & you're both happy, then continue with whatever works/however it works :-)
