  1. Maybe if you (or your family members) have emphysema or asthma or another lung problem you would have a different view?
  2. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200075/pollution/1360/air_pollution/5
  3. Southwark is a smokeless zone, so you can't burn fuel or have bonfires that produce dark smoke. Some people don't know this; others do and ignore it! Plesae don't burn fuel that makes smoke: it's unpleasant for most people and dangerous for some.
  4. Your money would go further in Warsaw or Krakow. The latter is much better known as a destination but Warsaw has an excellent (if reconstructed) Old Town, great transport, Communist history, a museum dedicated to neon signs (yes, really), cheap vodka and great restaurants on a par with the best of London for about 1/3 of the price. The airport is only about 50 minutes on a (60p) bus ride away from the centre.
  5. I like the idea of a "beauty quarter" in some respects. In the way that (in this country) you used to get lots of shops selling the same kinds of things together (which still goes on in some other countries), this may be a way encourage competition and cooperation. However, I also think that there is a real danger of there developing silos based not on product or services but by class, ethnicity, language etc. so I'd say this idea is not a good one.
  6. While I agree that the station must be improved, I can't go along with the idea that it is somehow OK for people to run for a train and not use designated crossing places. I see that the crossing and/or bus stop are not best placed, but it really is incumbent on the individual to ensure they are crossing safely, even if that means they may miss a train. Way too many people - including mothers with children in their arms/on their backs/in buggies - dash across roads seemingly with a death wish. And as for pedestrian visibility at night, gah......!
  7. I sent this thread on to Tom Edwards, BBC London's Transport reporter.
  8. Eww, the awnings at The Actress look a bit grubby! (see image)
  9. The PCL is looking for input from people: Also, part of the Peckham Coal Line project is to celebrate and record the heritage of SE15. By working with other local groups uncovering Peckham?s history, we want to collect and present memories people have of the area incorporating the coal yard, Bussey Building and Copeland Park Estate. What we'd like to end up with is a series of people profiles that, together, tell the story of the area from as far back as living memory allows to today. These might be people who remember when the yard was used for coal storage and distribution, through to the time before the Bussey Building and Copeland Park was turned into the thriving arts and community treasure it is today. If you?ve any suggestions as to who we should talk to, drop us a line at [email protected] .
  10. What about a double-glazed one from somewhere like the place that does sash windows on the parade of shops near Dulwich Library?
  11. The 176 night buses are more modern than the day versions and are used at night because they have CCTV on them, I read.
  12. It is a partly-used track - mostly on a viaduct, I think - that the developers want to turn into a walkable and cycblable pathway to link two parts of Peckham and to regenerate the areas throught/over which it passes.
  13. In a few years Rye Lane is going to be unrecognizable which I know is inevitable but part of me is going to miss its current incarnation. Will you really miss the muck, squalor and illegal parking? I won't. I am glad that things are moving and changing. I don't want a bland high street by any means, but I do want basic levels of access and hygiene. I hope the food markets, the independent stall holders, the pound shops and Iceland remain, but I also want more variety of shopping/banking/enertainment options. Three cheers for the new, independent optician, for example, and for the great little shops in Haldrons Arcade. Boos a-plenty for those shops that litter and block traffic. To justify bad practice so as to champion "coolness" and "vibe" is lamentable and risible at the same time.
  14. If a couple of cycle "super highways" can be blasted through I am sure that TfL has the wherewithal to free up a couple of parking spaces. It just depends on will and interest. Still wondering why it takes a year for the implementation of the new extension to No 42 route kicks in....
  15. Why does it have to take another year? At this rate the 63 extension to HOP may arrive in 2025!
  16. I don't have a car, haven't used one since 2000, walk and take public transport daily and very, very rarely use a taxi but I really don't like either the idea of or the implementation of the L'boro Jctn measures. That area needs movement, not cutting off like a cordon sanitaire. When you add in all the bother at Oval and Elephant it really does seem like nobody thought it through and simply wanted to be seen to be doing something radical.
  17. Clockworkorange for president!
  18. Nice images. FYI for next time, the fog was thicker further up the hill towards Dulwich Library. Near to Goodrich School/Donkey Alley it was a real pea souper at times. (Frost tends to stay longer on the pavement and on cars up there, too.)
  19. Next (or very near) to the chippy on Underhill, near the junction with Barry, a shop has a sign outside saying it will soon be a cafe. Hope it does well.
  20. offspinner I disagree. I am all in favour of buses being accessible to all, but a stop every three hundred yards is de trop. One has to think of the common good: bus stops are not bespoke! These clumped-together stops are not just on hills.
  21. I am a bus fan but the current state of affairs - lengthy journeys and random changing of destinations due to the roadworks at Elephant - is very poor. I would love there to be an express option at least every half hour and I really think some stops ought to be taken out of service. Why are there, for example, three stops between the bottom of Barry Road and the crossroads of Peckham Rye and ED Road. Why are there four stops from Denmark Hill to Dog Kennel Hill? It baffles me. Also, has the amount of services increased in the past five years to take into account increase in population etc? As for the trains, the Overground option is good. If only the 63 went all the way to HOP station..
  22. Will you be living near to the station? If you are up past the police station/school-to-be, you will have to add a ten-to-thirty minute walk (depending on where you are) or factor in a crowded bus journey (that could take at least ten minutes in traffic).
  23. I am with spider69. It's like something out of Quatermass at the moment and really needs to be dragged into daylights, as well as the 21st century.
  24. Flyr, Did you ask the driver to slow down - perhaps at a stop so you weren't distracting him or her? It's perfectly reasonable to do so. I spoke to a driver who had gone through a red light; if I hadn't he may well have continued to do so. Asking a councillor to intervene is useful but so is acting on the spot.
  25. Wood now removed but barriers near to the Friern/Goodrich junction remain.
