    Happy Christmas

JohnL - Sorry to hear you were abused. Please report it and CC your MP/local councillor. It is a valid and effective way of making your voice heard. Tell the managers at the WH about this thread as well. Happy 2018!
  2. I saw a wren in a hedge on Friern Road, library-end. Are they rare around here?
  3. We also live in a world in which more and more people are unconnected with important values such as civility and respect for others and in which solipsism and selfishness is more apparent. (This does not mean that all women who breastfeed at all times are selfish: I shouldn't have to spell that out but nuance is less and less recognised, even on the EDF.)
  4. Feeding noises, smells, crying can all be annoying, whether you like to admit it or not. Not being able to say so because it has been deemed that all breast feeding at all times in all situations must be allowed and welcomed is unrealistic and unfair. Absolutism in small, public spaces is not a good idea for anyone. Consideration of others has to come into it, even if it is not the main part of the equation. That's how we all rub along together, or at least that is the theory....
  5. So, yes, others can indeed lump it. Gracious, no? I am against anyone not being able to feed their baby when in it is necessary (for the baby, not the mother) but I am also against anyone who feels uncomfortable because of proximity, noise, smell, etc. not being able to politely say so lest they get a condescending backlash that this kind of unaccommodating and uncivil comment would seem to represent.
  6. Is it only "half a job" because the strip of land nearest to the shops has not been repaved? If so, that is not the fault of the council; I believe this strip belongs to the shops and so their owners have the right to say what happens to it. (I know it is a pain, but that seems to be the law, if I am correct.) Otherwise, back on track, I still think the general level of Xmas deco by individual shops hovers around 6/10. It could be a lot more inventive and alluring but only the shops themselves - individually or together - can change that.
  7. This reply from Caroline Pidgeon Thank you for raising concerns about overcrowding at Denmark Hill, I agree that the overcrowding there is unacceptable and that another entrance/exit point is needed. I have been on a site visit to the station with Govia Thameslink Railway and they have applied to the Government for funding to open another entrance on Windsor walk. I?m not sure where the funding bid is at the moment and so have been in touch with Govia to try and get confirmation on the matter.
  8. I sent the links to both threads to Caroline Pidgeon whose profile is here: http://www.carolinepidgeon.org (She is a transport bod, in short.)
  9. Taking the ramp form the stairs at the southern end of the platforms you pass a small concrete staircase - it's even got handrails, I think - that could easily have been/be another exit/entrance. As to why there is no exit on the other side (the road that is blocked off whose name I do not know) it baffles me. A busy station is good because it shows there is demand but when the station is not designed for such large amounts of people it will come back to haunt those in charge.
  10. They're ok, not great and not awful. There's nothing stopping individual businesses going to town or even Teaming up with neighbouring places without council help. W
  11. To be fair, leaves on the line has not been a problem - at least in the laughably big way it was - for the past couple of years. I think the Overground options has really helped but a big boost would be a station at C Green, to help take the strain and thereby make bus travel less unpleasant along the Walworth Road. We won't get a Tube station so it really is a case of being savvy with what we've got - delaying or bring forward travel times, walking more, being mindful that buses do have upstairs and roomy interiors and not hogging the lower deck. (It sounds trivial but speedy boarding can help cut delays when you add all the wasted minutes up.)
  12. How does this affect uses in SE22/15/21 who generally use N and E Dulwich and Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill stations, none of which are mentioned in the page from the link? By signing for more trains from these stations would people be then taking trains away from the stations I just mentioned?
  13. I hope it helps but it will only be in the mid-term, not soon. In the meantime, we have micro-improvements, like new buses and the hopper fare, but not much more around here. Walking is free and easy and sometimes quicker!

    Chimney

Surely the type of stove is the determiner of how much pollution is created, as well as the type of fuel. (If it is wood on an open fire - which I think is banned - it would be pretty horrendous.)
  18. Michelle - what knowledge! It is great to have. Why not speak ot the manager and point him/her to this thread? I think it would buck their ideas up. (Or, you could approach a local paper, though I think the direct method would be better.)
  19. I wrote to Caroline Pidgeon, asking her what GLA is doing about idling cars. It was tabled on 7/11 and there has been no reply to me, probably because there has been no reply to the question itself. She told me I would get one eventually....

  21. If you see a blue, council bag on the road near a litter bin, put it on top. Thta way, the foxes will be less likely to rip it open. It is meant to be done by the council cleaners and generally they do it, but sometimes don't!
  22. I read that CoOp may take over Costcutter, which would mean that the small shop (whose shutters are increasingly full of tagging that it refuses to take off or ask the council to do so) so that would mean two branches within yards of each other. FHR could be nicer if the pavements were sorted out and that BT phone box removed. It is generally OK so I hope the shops trying hard to make it better can get some support.
  23. There is also - supposedly - road work at Denmark Hill, travelling north from ED station. I saw one lane cordoned off with cones this morning but no suggestion of any hole. I agree, it is a drag.
  24. I saw one in PRP, on the lake island, at least five years ago. Never seen one there - or anywhere else - since.
