  1. It's great to have an active and committed set of councillors. It is less than great that people rely on them to report stuff that could easily be done themselves via the website or phoneline. I know that sometimes it is correct to ask a councillor to get involved, but for some instances of cracked pavements/flytipping etc. it is really the responsibility of the person who witnesses it. Condolences to Cllr. J B.
  2. I think what lets down most of the cafes here - in London, not just SE22 - is the service. A lot of servers, in my experience, don't know about the food they are serving and just act as if they are shifting Object A from Counter to Table. Here in ED, the best service comes at Blue Brick and down at Norris and Knight. I shan't list the bad ones....
  3. The old mobile phone shop, near to La Scala/ED station, is having a lick of paint. The man doing the decorating said he did not know what the owner wanted to do with it but said it could be an office or a florist. Also, the butcher's shop near The Plough had workemen in but they did not know what it would be.
  4. If they produce black smoke then yes, report, or at least tell them to stop or you will report. It is anti-social and potentially harmful to health, especially if you have a chest complaint.
  5. If you told them that their actions can cause some people with breathing/lung problems to get very ill they may get the message. You shouldn't have to tell them that - they should be alert to their general anti-socialness but if you need extra persuasion, it could work.
  6. I got fed up with TN because they over-stuffed the place with tables to an extent it was hard to get in and out even when not completely full. Also, for a place that is meant to be " a cut above" I didn't like the Blu-Tak'd menus/advertorials in the window - it bugged me too much than it ought to have. Reboot, perhaps?
  7. Possibly a crane fly, which - I think - emerge from the ground around about this time of year but only live a day or two.
  8. Please all report to the police via 101 so they can build up a profile.
  9. How about funding for less elaborate structures, such as bike loops and/or subsidised extra-strong bike locks. At the bare minimum, smart water should be offered to all moped/cycle/motorbike owners and they should be encouraged to use it.
  10. I doubt that having a cycle hangar or even ten of them will persuade anyone who has a car (and kids and pets and lives to go with them) to his/her motor. I do think that people with cycles and nowhere to put them should be helped. If it encourages more cycling and deters crime, bravo. It beats having them chained to (and sometimes stolen from/abandoned there) railings, which is what happens a lot anyway. I hope and expect that the council will keep them maintained. They are a decent size and pretty likely to attract taggers and other vandals.
  11. Whether the animal is stunned or not is one - very important - aspect of kosher/halal, but what if you are a humanist or a Jedi or a Zoroastrian or a devil worshipper and object to the name of a god you don't want to revere being praised verbally as the animal meets its death? Much is said about diversity so why not diversity of choice?
  12. I have sealed the envelope and sent it off. There was an email address on the letter. If you are living very close, you will have got a letter. Perhaps a neighbour nearer to it can help you? A compromise could be having one on the pavement near to where the road narrows and has railings. The pavement is wider and it could go opposite the salt/grit container. Parking around here, even with the school, is OK. That is not to say that a reduction in the number of school-run trips would not be very welcome.
  13. Goodrich Road...where there are already parking challenges due to it being right outside a school, the road being clogged up twice a day already. --- Perhaps the best thing to do is not to drive your children to school? (I own neither car nor cycle, BTW.)
  14. Good news for cyclists with nowhere safe to put their wheels: according to a letter I got today, the council wants to install a hangar near to the junction with Upland. It will mean one parking space will be gone but six people will have a place to put their bikes.
  15. Could this kind of waste be wrapped in newspaper - probably a good few layers?
  16. I have to say I feel sorry for the people who work in these kinds of places. It can't be good for the lungs or skin to be working with nail varnish, remover and other such substances. However, I do like nice nails...(on me and on others, varnished or not).
  17. Head
  18. Can you wrap it in newspaper? As for not wanting to pay for stuff - public money isn't infinite, much as we would like.
  19. It is going to be a nail shop which - I think - will be Glamorous Nails, currently a few shops further up towards ED station. Whether there will be two branches I don't know. Good luck to it: good to see vacated premises being reused so quickly.
  20. Demand is high and staff give people ten rather than the usual five, so if you go and you don't get even one, it could be because people are asking for more and compromised staff are handing out more.
  21. Windows (wooden, I think) shop on FHR, near the CoOp, in what used to be either the launderette or the betting shop. The one next to it is under reconstruction but the men working there did not know what it would be, somewhat oddly.
  22. It does sound like a lot of thought has gone into it, so that is encouraging. The fact it is coming from a private source is also welcome. I think RH's point that it may teach children - and their parents - that pollution just has to be dealt with after it has happened is valid. I do hope that opinions and habits will be changed - good luck! (I love the trees in the school already - but some need to be clipped back: a twig in the eye isn't nice!)
  23. I really think that if those people are giving you money to plant a ?21K hedge then they ought to - at the same time or instead of - stop driving so much. I am afraid this looks symbolic and tokenistic - which would be fine if it were much cheaper and still as effective (see privet suggestion). I don't own a car (haven't for almost twenty years) and walk and use public transport mostly; I pester the council for better upkeep and more planting of trees and more green spaces, so it's not as if I am ranting wildly with no context or sympathy. I just can't give my support to this because it smacks of gesture over efficacy and is way too dear.
  24. What a great idea. What an awfully large amount of money. Can it not be done cheaper? Can't you get two for your money? Why not just plant lots of privet bushes? (See below.) Really - I am not kidding. I just can't believe it needs to cost that much, as much as I think it is a worthy idea and one that would inspire others. Roger Harrabin, BBC enviro correspondent, has written this. (Similar articles are available at The Telegraph and Evening Standard sites) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-39943197 Hedges of a certain height and trees that don't form a canopy seem to do the trick.
