we are often in close proximity to others - agreed, but all the more reason to act with your (very close-by) neighbours in mind.

Yanis Varoufakis, no friend of the EU but someone who knows all about negotiating with the EU, says there will be no negotiations, just stalling and the demands that the UK must yield on everything before there is a discussion of what the UK wants/needs.

Are high rise buildings in and around ED safe?
Nigello replied to trinidad's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Will those who have been against new residential buildings, especially high-rise ones, now revise their opinion, at least on a case-by-case basis? It's now more apparent than ever that there is a need for much more housing than there is at the moment. There's a dilemma, too: if you don't want it, does it mean you don't want more people to live here (either from the rest of the UK or from the rest of the world)? For the record, I would like to see mid-rise housing that is rented by the council or a housing association, and for empty spaces above offices and shops to be turned into housing as soon as is possible. -
Just about to post that: sparrows - the hardiest of bird, surely - were taking sips from water in a plant pot (which I will now change as it must have been there some time).

Why not report her? If she is on your property and taking your item, then that is a crime. -
Street Lighting - Useless Southwark Council

If you do it online you can leave your contact details and they will send you a confirmation and a progress report. Having said that, one particular light goes on the blink very regularly. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Nigello replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Take a pic of aforesaid anti-social behaviour and send it to the press office of Deliveroo, saying you will be inclined to publish it on social media if you do not get your complaints addressed within five working days. -
Oh, come on: this is a city of several million people. Perhaps if it had been on the night after the fire or the next night, a cancellation or muting would have been appropriate, but going into a kind of mawkish hibernation is the very opposite of what London (and life) is about. We don't live real-life enactments of Twitter feeds or tabloid headlines!

It is not a race to the bottom! I would prefer fewer buses through the day and more, or bigger ones (or smaller shuttle services) at peak times.
-
Stupidity abounds, mainly because people really don't think it can happen to them. A man had his baby in front-sling, standing over the yellow line on the Central line earlier today, saying "choo-choo, here it comes". I looked at him old-fashionedly, but he was caught up dandling his child just feet from an electrified line as a train was about to arrive. Other parents insist on getting off the bus, straining their necks and then rushing over the (busy) road when the crossing is just 20" walk away.

I though the 176 cuts incorporated a boost at busy times in both directions?
-
I am afraid to say I do not see it getting any better soon, though the revamped timetable of the 176 just may help. That is why my suggestion to walk up or downhill was a real, non-facetious one. Not everyone can cycle, or even want to try because of their work's location, their timetable, etc., but nearly everyone can walk and in doing so can help themselves and others, at least when it comes to bus crowding - though I agree that the powers that be ought to do more to help.

First butterfly in SE22 - red admiral or peacock, I think - two days ago.

I tried this when I wrote to the GLA, which replied saying that because people could still get on buses - even if they were very crowded - then different services were not needed. The 176 schedule is changing, as are the actual vehicles, this month, so that may make things better. Without seeming trite, I suggest getting up ten minutes earlier or walking up/down-route (Dulwich Plough/ED station) to be able to get on, or just walking full stop!

Walls in Dulwich area for street art....location scouting
Nigello replied to bilksy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It used to have a lovely, extravagant and trippy full-length mural which had to be painted over because of repairs. Another one there would be great - and well protected from the two-bit taggers who seem to enjoy spoiling the murals around here. -

Not really in the same league, but a nice (but cheap - heavily discounted) winter wreath was nabbed from my door (which involved unlocking the gate and walking ten feet or so to it) a few months ago, during the day. It's just around the corner from Dunstans; perhaps this sub-area is rich pickings for green-fingered reprobates? -
Lanzarote is not spoilt by over-development. It is smaller that, say, Tenerife and has the same kind of stark, lunar landscape. There is a tiny island of the north coast which you can reach by boat: get off and walk to the beaches, or stay a few nights. There is a fantastic cactus garden and several spots dedicated to the artist who made it his life's work to protect the island's environment - Manrique. There are agriturismo spots inland and good resort-style places with great pools and balconied rooms. The coastal towns/resorts are low-rise and pleasant.

The CoOp (LL and FHR) both have chilled cabinets that fail to shut properly. When I query it, they always come along with a key and then - hey presto - the doors slide together as they ought to. They keep them slid back because it is easier for them to load and stack. Not great for your food or the environment (which I pointed out). That said, I think the CoOp's revamp/rebrand (just bringing back the '60s colour and livery, in effect) is good. The charity work they do (via the CoOp membership) is to be lauded and now the M and S is open it is rarely busy.

Labour will not want to keep Corbyn for any much longer than he is necessary. I cannot believe the party will suddenly forget about its very apparent and much discussed internal division over whether to keep him or ditch him as a leader, though, in the short term, noone will pick a fight with him given the party's, er, "victory".

I was surprised to see the SNP lose so many seats - and to a variety of opponents - and think it will mean a death knell to IndyRef2. Also, 206 MPs are female this time - a record.

To the man that asked my 6 year old to cycle on the road
Nigello replied to R U IN ED's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Pugwash - I feel bad for our aunt but today most people will be willing to go "ah, that's bad" and then do exactly the same thing that caused her suffering simply because the rules only apply to others. The worst kind of parent is the one that cycles two or three abreast with offspring on pavements as if it were the most natural and acceptable thing - again, an example of "it's OK because I am me". Under 12s on pavements is fine as long as they are told to be alert and considerate. Under 12s with oafish and self-entitled mum or dad riding alongside, not. We live in a big, crowded and often aggravating city - why make it more unpleasant? -
I also remember the lurid red and yellow/orange and black/blue and red of the respective parties' posters in windows and on placards in the '70s and '80s and find it odd that much more educated and - probably - politically savvy people nowadays here in our area don't do the same. I do agree that businesses professing their political allegiances are foolish because you can never be sure of your clientele: there MUST be Tory hipsters out there!
