Saw one today on a neighbour's buddleia.

All this aside, for better or for worse, the arrival of social media and the desire for easy/cheap/free content by the media has meant that this kind of identity brandishing is much more common than before. It also tends to magnetise either those who are almost all in agreement and those who totally disagree so I don't think our reading and reaction to it should be taken at face value.

>>>>I simply meant to observe that racial prejudice, where it exists, transcends gender, class, sexuality and age. Hence my statement that ?white middle class, white working class, white men, white women, white gays, white children? are racist, while rhetorically hyperbolic, was a clear reference to the fact that racism is not an exclusive characteristic of any one demographic. Then why not just say >>racial prejudice, where it exists, transcends gender, class, sexuality and age. That way, none of this would have happened.

Agreed: if we wait for the powers that be to change things, we'll be waiting a long time, hence my belief that only individuals working alongside each other can change traffic levels. Sometimes you have to drive or be driven but not always. Changing habits and thoughts about what is one's "right" can have an immediate and positive effect: i.e. just walk to the Picture House tonight instead of driving the 1.5 miles.

I think that First Mate and Rendel both have valid points. The best anyone can do is honestly take a look at their habits and needs and wants, and see whether a realistic and reasonable alternative to motor transport can be found, even for a small proportion of those needs/wants/habits. Eg. if you hate being on a crowded bus, walk - even if it is just for the length of a few stops. Ultimately it boils down to individuals, so it starts with you, not the person you are arguing with on the EDF.

Remind me of Luca - mind is a blank. Near to the Plough, the former corner shop looks like it will become again a corner shop - there was some movement there recently. The butcher's shop opposite the Plough could do with someone taking it over - it has been tagged quite boldly already.

Mugged at knifepoint near Greendale (Aug 2nd 2017)

RP Child - Southwark is hit and miss on this. Some roads - Barry, for example - have the big trees cut right back, even at the base where the new twigs sprout, but other places are left to grow like topsy. Ring the enviro line - 020 7525 2000 - and ask them to keep it in check, if it is indeed Southwark's responsibility. -

The police can do something - even if it is only to add it to our build up a database. It is great that you reported it. Would a more detailed description help? -
Did you not think to stop them and ask them what they were doing and letting them know that it could be mistaken for something potentially criminal? A warning is good, but you really ought to have done something to show them they have been noticed.

The former newsagent's opposite the KwikFit is to be a nail parlour, according to the person working there. He nodded to the other nail parlour a few doors down but I did not know whether he meant that one would be moving to the new premises or just that it was going to be a separate one. Also, the new shop next to the Polish shop near to Sainsbury's is going to be what?
-
The Sainsbury's near The Plough has a vacant shop next to it, in turn next to the Polish shop. Anyone got an idea as to what it will be?

Why not look at the US Mail's website to find out how they'd do it, and cross ref with Royal Mail? Or ask the framer (or any framer nearby) how s/he would do it. Good luck.

Redevelopment plans for Aylesham Centre - 20 storeys high!
Nigello replied to Blah Blah's topic in The Lounge
So, if there are too many people for a certain footprint, what do we do? Would J/B, Uncleglen B like to see inward migration to London - from the rest of the UK or elsewhere - curtailed? Or should taxes be raised to ensure everyone gets a place at the school or an appointment at the dentist or a library book they really want to use for study? -

If high-rises are built to much better safety standards and have decent-sized rooms, then I think they should be built. We have little space and lots (too many?) of people. You do the maths, as that annoying phrase goes... -
Does not the post office this? I got some things certified a year or so ago but I cannot remember which kinds of forms, certificttes etc they are allowed to copy.

Mind at Goose Green always had a clothes bin outside but is it still there after its revamp? On another note, animal charities may take certain textiles so you could always ring them.

Anti social behaviour of neighbours
Nigello replied to bagpuss's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I sympathise and would say, although you may find it hard, you must be assertive because you are are the one who is being badly treated: don't feel bad for complaining or you will be already "fighting" with one arm tied behind your back. Let them know that you are your child are being badly affected by the noise and say you are being reasonable when you ask that they do something about it. Remind them they are living in a crowded city with limited personal space and that it is fair that they act accordingly. After that, record them on your phone and note down when it happens and approach your local councillor for help. Doing something about it will help you feel that you are doing your best to control the situation. Good luck. -
An estate police car just sat outside Goodrich School, nobody in it, with its engine idling for at least 25 minutes. When the officers came back from wherever they'd been I asked why they'd left it like that. The reply was that it was because the computers on board needed the engine to be running. I said it had seemed like a waste of energy and a source of unwanted pollution and he just repeated - neutrally and politely - that it was a requirement.
