I have had one since 2002 and have really made use of it. I disagree that retailers don't accept it, though that used to be more of the case about five years ago. (Even on and around LL, small shops like La Scala and Karavan accept it.) I used it for contactless travel instead of an Oyster card and just put everything I can on it. BA Amex comes in two versions: the one you pay for accelerates your points by giving you 50% more on most purchases. (Buying a BA flight or holiday gives you double points.) Once you spend ?10K on the paid-for card, you get a voucher that means that when you cash in your Avios for a flight - even a first class, 13-hour one - you get exactly the same free. (All taxes and charges have to be paid for, of course, but it means you can get a flight worth up to ?5K for about ?500 or so!) Paying it off on in full every months really means you get up to six-weeks credit and free flights. You can boost Avios buy registering with various retailers, which often have promotions to earn double points. https://shopping.avios.com/en/?from=collectNav (NB Avios can be put into your BA account easily, by phone or online.)

EDPH has put up branding in the front windows and door of the old Irish shop. Will it be a proper extension or a separate shop? I am assuming the former.

Beware of petty thieving in Dulwich Library
Nigello replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not theft, but an unpleasant man using a computer today was chuntering away somewhat threateningly to a woman (who may or may not have given him reason to be annoyed). When he swore I asked him to stop and he got all huffy and stood up and asked me to keep my nose out, which said it was my business if me and other people were being disturbed by unsuitable language. I told a librarian about thirty feet away and he twigged and then started off all over again, swaggering and the like, so I told him I had said my peace and was leaving. The library staff have a lot to put up with... -
Anywhere local you can get glasses made quickly?
Nigello replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
I hear you can pick up a pair for a steal at Dulwich Library... -
Cancelling future parties after acknowledging it was too loud is welcome and sensible. Booking such event(s) in a densely-populated area, knowing that making excessively loud noise was the actual aim and not just a side-effect is utterly cavalier, selfish and ignorant. So much for "community values".

Two ladies going thru bins on whately road now
Nigello replied to tiddles's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A "lady" wouldn't even think of going anywhere near a bin! -
Wow - talk about catty! It's reasonable to be able to see what you'll be eating and how much you'll be expected to pay. Who wants to be stung or have to awkwardly ask questions about price? Most people are on a budget but perhaps not all EDF folk!

News at home can - and must - be overseen and possibly censored by parents: that's a reasonable request.

Logical but not for a ban, more of a partial one based on proximity to schools and colleges, not on public transport but only in publications meant for adults or in 15 trailers at the flicks.

Send the leaflets back to me the address of the business: with no postage; individually.

Ms Foster has many good points but I can sense the not-so-reluctantly felt cushiony sensation she has of being able to write truthfully and reliably about being working class (even educating others about it) on the ur-bourgeois platform of Twitter - a "privilege" she may not recognise.

Do what you want - but be prepared to feel awkward if it's not tipping. Be brave!

Jade Boulangerie - Barry Rd closing tomorrow
Nigello replied to SebsC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Perhaps it is because I generally go either during the week or before 1030 at the weekend to BB Cafe. La Scala is great, too (but I long to pull up the weeds in the otherwise lovely back garden. In fact, I have done just that when I sat next to a few the other week!) -
Try the Canaries for temps around 18C or more. It doesn't sound a lot but it's much warmer - and, importantly, lighter and drier - than the UK and only four hours away. Lanzarote is a good choice as there's less development and the attractions of the local boy made good, the artist Miro'. easyJet goes to Tel Aviv, so there's always that but it's likely to be more expensive.

It's great to have an active and committed set of councillors. It is less than great that people rely on them to report stuff that could easily be done themselves via the website or phoneline. I know that sometimes it is correct to ask a councillor to get involved, but for some instances of cracked pavements/flytipping etc. it is really the responsibility of the person who witnesses it. Condolences to Cllr. J B.

I think what lets down most of the cafes here - in London, not just SE22 - is the service. A lot of servers, in my experience, don't know about the food they are serving and just act as if they are shifting Object A from Counter to Table. Here in ED, the best service comes at Blue Brick and down at Norris and Knight. I shan't list the bad ones.... -
The old mobile phone shop, near to La Scala/ED station, is having a lick of paint. The man doing the decorating said he did not know what the owner wanted to do with it but said it could be an office or a florist. Also, the butcher's shop near The Plough had workemen in but they did not know what it would be.

Fire pit in garden, students burning toxic materials
Nigello replied to Bagpipes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If they produce black smoke then yes, report, or at least tell them to stop or you will report. It is anti-social and potentially harmful to health, especially if you have a chest complaint. -

Nigello replied to Bagpipes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you told them that their actions can cause some people with breathing/lung problems to get very ill they may get the message. You shouldn't have to tell them that - they should be alert to their general anti-socialness but if you need extra persuasion, it could work. -
I got fed up with TN because they over-stuffed the place with tables to an extent it was hard to get in and out even when not completely full. Also, for a place that is meant to be " a cut above" I didn't like the Blu-Tak'd menus/advertorials in the window - it bugged me too much than it ought to have. Reboot, perhaps?

Possibly a crane fly, which - I think - emerge from the ground around about this time of year but only live a day or two.

Be careful! Phone snatching attempt - East Dulwich Road
Nigello replied to sarah g's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Please all report to the police via 101 so they can build up a profile. -
How about funding for less elaborate structures, such as bike loops and/or subsidised extra-strong bike locks. At the bare minimum, smart water should be offered to all moped/cycle/motorbike owners and they should be encouraged to use it.
-
I doubt that having a cycle hangar or even ten of them will persuade anyone who has a car (and kids and pets and lives to go with them) to his/her motor. I do think that people with cycles and nowhere to put them should be helped. If it encourages more cycling and deters crime, bravo. It beats having them chained to (and sometimes stolen from/abandoned there) railings, which is what happens a lot anyway. I hope and expect that the council will keep them maintained. They are a decent size and pretty likely to attract taggers and other vandals.
