yeah ok, they couldn't decide who should call the police so they all called the police. Must have been about six or seven of them. And back on topic, the skanking lady who preys on people's better nature also has been doing the same in Camberwell a friend tells me. She asked for ?4 but was given ?10 because my friend's nice like that, well she was but isn't any more because of the aforementioned skanking lady.

You'll like it here and I only know of a couple of mugging in the area in the last 12 months and I feel relatively safe. As Ibo said in another post last night "It is best not to rely on the negative experiences of others."

ah weird, sorry about that, I see "Last Activity: 25/11/2007 18:55" against Polly D, which was only a couple of days ago. Do you see last activity against other people's names?

No, have a look here

You're right, she said that she needed money to top up her meter card at the garage.

Listen Against, Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Last week one of the discussions was "Is Gardeners' Question Time racist towards non-gardeners?" Great stuff.

grrr, the door buzzer went at 6am, it was a woman "Hi, sorry to disturb you, I'm desperate for some money for the meter, ?4 is all I need. We've got no electricity". My spidey senses immediately tingled as I know other people have mentioned her before on the forum so I told her to hang on, I'll bring some money down in a minute and my girlfriend's called the police, then watched out the window. See her run, considering how she was desperate she was for ?4 I thought she would have waited. If she comes to you, call the police on 020 7378 1212 whilst she's there. She's black, short hair, mid 30's and my neighbour, who also saw her, said she can sometimes be seen outside the EDT asking people for cigarettes.

In a rare occurrence earlier I was getting some dinner ready for my better half and myself, and during a break in the proceedings I was having a read of the gourmet extravaganza that is the local Landcroft House blog, which mentions there is someone selling oysters in the ED Warehouse. So I popped down and right at the back of the place there's an oyster stall, and I just managed to catch them whilst they were clearing up and finishing for the day and get a few for a pre-dinner treat. The guy there was really friendly and although I had missed out on the Champagne they were dishing out earlier he gave me a bit of deal as it was the end of the day. We had a bit of a chat and he also told me that 4 more stalls should be open next week and another 4 the week after that. Now I think my point is I find that brilliant, that I can now pop out and get some oysters on a Sunday afternoon, I've never done that before but will certainly do it again for a treat. And now I've seen the warehouse in action I still think it is a great addition to East Dulwich.

East Dulwich Garden Centre - possibly replaced with flats
Mark replied to TJS's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
My source who told me it was 48 flats has turned out to be somewhat dishonest, apologies for that. -

Did anyone go to this? What are the proposed plans like?

I hear they have planning permission for 48 flats there, but I agree yes, a garden centre is better -

pearcesa Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Surely not another residential development for young professionals in East Dulwich - YAWN! How do you know that it's for young professionals and not key worker housing? Do you know something we don't? And are you're against the new library too? -
ok, so in true passive direct action style I went into Celestial and asked what's going on. I was told by the nice lady behind the till that there's someone going round next Tuesday to sick a camera in the drain to see what and where the problem is. They have allowed them access but as they don't know where the problem is they don't want them ripping up the shop floor just yet. Seems fair enough. Admin, please can you amend the first post please as you see fit?
-
boycotting Celestial seems a bit strong without knowing both sides of the argument, I assume they don't want to close (even partially) in the run up to Christmas as it will be their busiest time. Passive direct action is what's needed, we should just tell the people in Celestial that it would be appreciated if they could let their neighbours unblock their drains. If that fails then plan B.

I'd see it that they would make more of an effort to make sure you're getting your post as they know they're likely to lodge a complaint if you don't, unlike the guy next door who never complains even though the postie doesn't deliver those interesting and possible worth something packages. Or they'd piss in your letter box. -

macroban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The despatch of letters negates the ecological benefit of the bags? Oh dear. The main reason of the bags is so people don't use plastic bags, the benefit of a letter (on recycled paper) informing people of how they can get a SNUB bag outweighs the negative effect. The door-to-door delivery of these letters by Jumbo 747 however may be a cause for concern. If you have concerns about the negative impact of letters may I suggest focus your attention on the prolific postings of a recently opened estate agent rather than on a local environmental scheme. -

if you want to hear the tune click here it was created by the Suburban Pirate, "the voice of middle class angst" -
It seems that the SE5 forum's more than just a website forum, it's a community project run by a committee. But if they're putting just the website out to tender and want someone to build it then then yes, we would be interested in helping the neighbours. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Hi sphilips a valid point and one that pops up every now and then. The Administrator does try and keep discussions on topic and often posts a "keep on topic" warning but there's just no stopping some people but that's the way of a conversation. The "cosy chats" are exactly why the Lounge was set up so when discussions (or threads) continue off topic they can carry on in the other room. These threads aren't split where they go off topic as it's hard for the Administrator or moderators to draw a line as to when that actually happens, especially when they go off topic and then back on, then off, on etc. I don't think there's anyway that the Admin could feasibly police all conversations like someone chairing a meeting i.e. as soon as there's it goes off topic stepping in, or telling people off for adding nothing to a conversation as it is subjective. However don't forget that the regulars help police the site and when someone come in and says e.g. "I hate Foxtons and their minis taking up parking spaces/I want xxx shop/ED was so good and classless 1/10/100 years ago" again they tend to point them to the previous discussion on that subject thus saving us all. At the end of the day it's meant to be a fun and useful place, if people want to watch, lurk, dip in, plunge in they can. There's nothing stopping them from joining in except themselves, like when you arrive at a party and don't know anyone you have to make an effort to meet people (but it's better when there's a good host who introduces you to strangers). Unfortunately no-one knows you're there if you lurk on a forum so if you don't make yourself known and interact no-one's going to acknowledge you. Or just start a new post, in the correct section, that's within the rules, and not in all capitals, and after you've done a search to see if anyone else has asked the same and you'll be fine. Thanks for your comments, it's always good to get feedback, we (the people who run the forum) don't know what the users are thinking about the forum unless they tell us so it is very much appreciated. ps I am thinking that a rule should be brought in so that when people say things like GPWM they should explain it, it's not obvious to most of us what it means.

Considering that a supermarket has to pay for rent, rates, wages, light & heat maintenance and repair of the property, and the need to earn a living out of running it all, I'd say 49p ;-)
