Yes, indeed. (would that apply to the Harris? I have no idea..)

I agree, in that it's a personal decision, not an easy one and certainly not one I would criticise. But not sure about the "work hard" bit... lots of people work hard - harder than I could even contemplate - and cannot dream of paying 15K a year in school fees. The private schools round here are great and any child would be lucky to get in, but sometimes it's good to acknowledge your privilege...
  3. I think we've seen a bit of a re-emergence of French food in London recently (now people have remembered that confit duck and tart tatin actually taste a hell of a lot better than foraged sea vegetables and edible flowers). And we've seen a corresponding renewed interest in French wine. That's my theory anyway.
  4. Yes, perhaps some confusion. There is a (new-ish) veggie caf? on the same stretch as Pedler called Two Girls.
  5. I remember reading an interview with Johnny in the Peckham Peculiar (I think), and he was saying that he thought what made the pub unique was that it appealed to a cross section of the community. Long time regulars drinking at the bar, parents having an after-school pizza with the kids, builders after finishing a hard days work, professionals coming for a drink and dinner, 20-somethings coming for the DJ nights.. it always seemed very inclusive and unpretentious. What a shame.

Yeah I'm disappointed about The Nines too, but the transformation of Forza Win is IMO a good thing and shows they're here for the long haul. Blandification? The negativity seems a little unnecessary.
  7. A private firm should be able to provide a fixed cost programme of complete eradication. If the vendor arranges (and pays for) that, the mortgage shouldn't be too much of a problem. It does depend on the lender though.
  8. Chief Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > why would anyone prefer Peckham? Whoa there. Both are good areas, doesn't need to be a competition. East Dulwich has a more upmarket, genteel feel... smart high street with shops, restaurants, cafes. Slightly more leafy and suburban. Peckham Rye is much better connected, has some nightlife, just as good for eating and drinking, more scruffy but also more eclectic. Your money will go a bit further, and there are some much larger houses to be found. Pros and cons. IMO the triangle between East Dulwich Rd, Bellenden Rd and Rye Lane is the "sweet spot", where you have both within a short walk. (I am biased)
  9. Angelina Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > it's a ten min walk to PR station, which feels > like ages in London-commute time! Then it's probably closer to the station than you would be up by the Lordship Lane cinema. Like I say... PR much better for transport (especially when Southern decide to strike or not run on the weekend).
  10. Is the one nearer Peckham Rye walking distance to PR station? If so, I'd go for that one. Transport from East Dulwich sucks.

The restaurant is in central London, which should be a giveaway! But (in all seriousness) glad you enjoyed it. JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If that is the case people will lose confidence in the whole concept. > > I'd think they'd make a huge effort to maintain quality. Well they're trading on reputation, you're right. The original USP was restaurant quality food. They're still trying to maintain that illusion, while moving to mass-produced food, reheated in industrial estates, at premium prices. Endorsed by restaurants who are willing to have inferior food sold - for a huge markup - under their brand.
  12. I only order from ones I know come from the actual restaurants. If you order Busaba Eathai, Yoobi Sushi, or Tommi's Burgers... it's very mediocre food (prepared/reheated in Melbourne Grove or Valmar Road) and very, very expensive.
  13. Mick Mac Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think they give you a free quote - so nothing to lose > > https://www.chipsaway.co.uk I booked the local chipsaway guy a while ago. He didn't show up. So took it into JS Coachworks in Forest Hill for a quote. They couldn't be bothered to get back to me with a quote, even after chasing. I guess the job's too small for them (5 or 6 scratches of various size/depth) but I won't be returning. Any other suggestions appreciated (too deep for T-Cut)

The brits are not very adventurous when it comes to breakfast.

  16. The Forresters wasn't that bad. "Scampi" and chips with a pint of lager for a fiver, wasn't it? Or thereabouts. You didn't have to join in with the fighting if you didn't fancy it.
  17. robbin Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Am I right in thinking the prevailing EDF view on protest marches is: > > student grants = march away - the more the better. > mass murder of civilians by terrorists = pointless, stupid even? You're right. Great bunch of lads, marching for a tolerant and inclusive society. My bad!

At best, > misguided, at worst, sinister. Well yes, pretty much my point. Protesting against terrorism is pointless - stupid, even. It is inevitably just a veneer.
  19. My view - it is na?ve to even consider that this could be an innocent anti-terror march. We are pretty much ALL against terrorism and religious extremism. It is the default view for the majority. A march is not needed, unless you have some kind of subtext. The far right ALWAYS try to phrase their beliefs to fit the mainstream dialogue... and they always deny they're racists. Seen it all before. If they really were a "great bunch of lads" with a small handful of racists in attendance, then they would have sent the racists packing. They didn't. So they're at the very least complicit. So... f*ck off and take your knuckle-dragging, football hooligan, lager swilling lad culture bollox with you.
  20. It was going to be a restaurant from the "Victus & Bibo" Turkish-ish street food guys. Their licence was granted last summer, I don't know what the delay is about, or someone different has now taken the site on? It's a funny little spot... a bit too from the main drag, unless the food is really bloody good.
  21. Vandalism? I think it looks rather nice. Better than knocking it down.
  22. I dunno... while I support your right to strike (and I believe it is largely justifiable in this case), I don't agree that calling for a total boycott is the right thing to do. Thanks for the info, tho.
  23. Sue Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > This was a whole curry, not just sauce :)) > > Including the rice. With chips as well. One of my first meals after arriving at University (up North) was curry, rice and chips. "Would you like half and half", they asked me. I didn't have a clue what he was talking about, so I just said "yes please!". It was a surprise, but not a bad one. I later realised that some Chinese takeaways were offering the same sort of deal... e.g. rice, chips, and some sort of "sweet and sour" concoction. That wasn't so great.
  24. edphstaff Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Picturehosue don't pay their staff a living wage > and are on strike soon! Don't support them When you say "don't support them"... are you asking people simply not to support their side of the argument, or to completely boycott Picturehouse cinemas? Could you also let us know if the cinema will be open (staff working, films showing, and all that gubbins) this coming Saturday morning, for the kids films? Thanks
  25. JohnL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I think Costa on Rye Lane is overflow for Wetherspoons sometimes :) I've only been in there once. But it struck me as one of the few places in Peckham that apparently appeals to a cross-section of the community.. ages, ethnicities (and I assume income).. can't say that about many places to be honest. I'm all for it.
