Television research into parking problems
Alan Dale replied to TV Researcher's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Jim the Chin / Jeremy Clarkson. Like you, Littlejohn would love a programme about traffic wardens doling out tickets to pensionners for commission. I would prefer a programme that would advocate a more progressive approach to parking that considers the needs of the community as a whole over the needs of the private motorist. -

I see that but in my opinion they shouldn't be. It's another example of the BBC dumbing down and running populist / tabloid stories rather than making people think. -

It is definitely true that unfair car use - blocking shops, parking in bus lanes, etc - has a much more significant detrimental effect on the borough than unfair ticketing. -
Whilst I agree that rich people are the tightest I think it's important to note that 'this way of banking' relies heavily on the giro. Being generous with other people's money is of debatable merit and giving up time when you are out of work is probably preferable to staying up all night watching jobfinder on Ceefax.

There is a man who goes by the name of Regeneguru on the SE5 forum. See link and read his post about Lordship lane CPZ:- http://www.se5forum.org/forum/index.php/topic,382.0.html I'll put a link there back to this and he might be able to help you out.. I'm sure he'll rightly point out that unfair ticketing is a minor issue compared to the disproportionate consideration car use is given in town planning. -
And what song would you like played at your funeral?
Alan Dale replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in The Lounge
I'm having Los Del Rio's Macarena and I'll haunt anyone who doesn't do the actions. -
All of you who have picked slightly obscure songs in the quest for coolness could have saved so much effort if you'd just lumped for Angels by Robbie the fat dancer from Take That. It's probably still in the CD player from the Friday (cheapskates) wedding. Getting married on a Friday is a liberty by the way, you might as well just include an invoice for a days wages with each invitation and do it on a Saturday.

Reassuring to know that if me and my kids fall out and don't make up before I go then I've always got Mike and the Mechanics to say what I was too proud to say. Say it loud..... -
This is a spin off from the top ten song lyrics. What was the best first song at a wedding you have been to? What was the worst? For me the best was Chumbawumba- I get knocked down but I get up again - it was a second marriage for both. I think the worst is a toss up between Brian Adams Everything I do ( crap) and Freda Payne's Band of Gold (innappropriate).

Peckham Rye Station (being revamped?)
Alan Dale replied to tommy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Some of the money spent in Peckham has definitely not been wasted. The leisure centre is great. Our babies love 'rafts and rascals' and the soft play area. I also think the library is brilliant. The views of the city from the children's section are fantastic. -

I am a professional golfer but until I get any good at it I will continue to work in the City to pay my mortgage. -

I just think that it is preferable to mindless agreement. If a troll expresses a legitimate opinion that can then be debated it doesn't matter to me whether that opinion was one that said troll necessarily subscribes to. In the case of houseprices I think some of the more capitalist opinions are so readily dismissed on here that a bit of trolling is forgivable as it may be necessary to redress the balance. Even on an anonymous blog some people are more concerned with being popular than with debating the relevant issues. It's refreshing to see a post such as DDs which is about issues and not about being pals. -
Foxtons are coming - Fact (ED housing market)
Alan Dale replied to DiscoDex's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I have the opposite opinion about antognistic posts. I hate it when blogs descend into mutual back patting and chuminess rather than talking about issues. A bit of harmless trolling often helps to generate decent debate. I think that unless you have a more specific criticism of DD then you are being rude. To dismiss his post as antogonistic might make you feel better but I think that regardless of any perceived tone, he has raised some very valid points. -
Foxtons are coming - Fact (ED housing market)
Alan Dale replied to DiscoDex's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Harsh reality maybe, but I completely agree with Disco Dex. Whinging about local house price inflation is a waste of effort. You need to accept it and plan for it as best you can. Furthermore I think it is unfair to criticise the tone of DD's post as I am sure he is just expressing his own legitimate view. Granted it may not ingratiate him with the average forumite but the paradigm is shifting and the average forumite in two years time may be more inclined to agree with Disco Dex. Again one might not like it but it seems inevitable to me. -
Foxtons are coming - Fact (ED housing market)
Alan Dale replied to DiscoDex's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Agreed Mcokney- whilst they are interdependent there is not a linear relationship between high house prices and high rental prices. High house prices may drive more people to rent but if they are a product of demand for buy-to-let investment then the surplus rental properties available will have a counteracting deflationary impact on rental prices. Snorky's point about happiness is interesting and topical. Merits a separate thread though... anyone? Brendan - I expect the consequences will be migration. Gentrification will ripple outwards from its ED epicentre. -
Foxtons are coming - Fact (ED housing market)
Alan Dale replied to DiscoDex's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I agree with you DiscoDex. Foxtons are great at contributing to localised house price inflation and that is good thing for homeowners. Having a substantial amount of equity in your house gives financial security and offers the opportunity to raise capital for other projects and investments. The only minor downside being as Jeremy mentioned that you may find it more difficult to make a step up in the same area due to price inflation widening the gap between your current property and that which you desire. I also think that whilst housing is a necessity, homeownership is a luxury. Especially if that home is in such a desirable area as East Dulwich. That said, this debate has been done to death and nobody here ever seems to alter their opinion so I am reluctant to get drawn into it again other than to let you know that you are not alone in welcoming Foxtons to the area. -
Is it just me or is Cafe Nero really dirty?

I haven't tried those two so I can't compare. I like the coffee but I am a coffee whore. I like it strong and rich. -

It was the comedic implication of the dichotomous double entendre that caused me to wield my cleaver rather than just the fact that I am an obnoxious pedant. -

Alan Dale replied to spirit's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Macroban - I accept the cleaver jibe but I think my usage of the word dichotomy was fine. Dichotomy: division into two mutually exclusive, opposed, or contradictory groups Option one- it is just spirit that is really dirty Option two - it is both spirit and cafe nero that are really dirty If option one is true then Cafe Nero cannot be really dirty as it is just Spirit that is really dirty so option two must be false. If option two is true then it is not just spirit that is really dirty and therefore option one must be false. As one of the options being true implies the other to be false then the two options are mutually exclusive. Anyway- has anyone tried House on Camberwell Church St? It's a new coffee bar and gallery. It's really good and not really dirty. -

they are still doing it (parents leave child in car)
Alan Dale replied to lilly123's topic in The Lounge
They are losers. One guy has a Luis Vitton wallet with trademark pattern and reckons that he's not a chav just because it's real. Another girl reckons she doesn't dream of souping up her car but drives around in an Impreza turbo. Total pair of chavs. Like me. -

A number of my colleagues completed the test. Those who got the lowest scores all turned out to be deliberately interpreting the questions in such a way as to get a low score. Usually they did this because they had normal chavvy backgrounds that they were ashamed of. I'd like to see your answers Jah Lush. Any chance?
