Article today in the Southwark News 'Astounding number of birds sighted in Burgess Park in 2021' Because of the parks open spaces and lake settings there have been over 85 species of birds visiting the park, some coming from as far away as Siberia and Africa. A frequent visitor was the Peregrine Falcon, which can often be seen flying over the park looking for their next meal. I've got to know a lot of birds in my garden, including the humble Wood Pigeon and would hate to see the video.

Newspaper Availability at Grove Vale Library
hammerman replied to Brideshead's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Newspaper deliveries to shops and other establishments and then deliveries which filter down to households etc. by the newspaper deliverer have been affected mostly by the ULEZ charge which came into effect in October around six weeks ago. -

Very worrying that Harman has or has had in this case a 75% share of the vote in the constituency. I wondered why a lone Labour councillor was doing the rounds last week, knocking on doors on a dark and cold night asking if there was anything he could help with. Soon sent him scuttling away down the garden path.

Booster for housebound problems
hammerman replied to dresswaves's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
After lots of phone calls and going into the GP surgery reception my housebound family member finally has a third booster jab booked for tomorrow. Somebody from the Covid vaccination place phoned this afternoon to say they will be coming along to give the vaccine. Overall this has been a poor service for elderly people compared to the roll-out for the over 50s etc. -
Yes this will be very interesting as Harriet is leaving in the wake of so many Southwark Labour decisions made about the closing of local roads/bicycle lanes being made etc. Also her views on other subjects are regularly aired in the South London Press. I bet she will get a good pension.

Price of a pint of Beer in the Lane
hammerman replied to JCoftheN's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm meeting up with a friend at the Fox this week and looking forward to it. Will be interesting to see what they have on offer food-wise as the last time the only thing they had when we ordered was scampi and chips or salad. Everything else on the menu was off the card. Just hope they can live up to things as the Fox on the Hill holds a special place in my heart. -
There's an e-scooter bay been in place along the road from Denmark Hill train station a couple of months ago which is an eyesore and now a week or so ago there's been another one plonked on the pavement as you cross the road from Ruskin Park. Thanks a lot Southwark Council for being a pilot scheme! They seem to be hell bent on introducing lots of right on things like artwork in the middle of a road but neglecting their housing priorities.

A little too close for comfort: 2 arrests after submachine gun found in car
hammerman replied to IlonaM's topic in The Lounge
Erm, there is a primary school just a one minute walk away from Crossthwaithe Avenue? So it might be exceedingly quiet during the day (the Bike Project you seem to have called out) but any crime activity on the Denmark Hill Estate should be made known to people living in the area surely? -
Price of a pint of Beer in the Lane
hammerman replied to JCoftheN's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's all about the gentrification of East Dulwich really. I met up with a friend in the Plough near Dulwich Library before the lock down and was flabbergasted to be charged double the price of a bottle of wine in the area for two glasses. When I had a joke with the bar attendant about the price he just turned away and served the next customer. -
Dental hygienist in and around SE22 (under ?85) - anyone?
hammerman replied to Nigello's topic in The Lounge
My NHS Dentist who I've been with for around 35 years has always done a clean with the check-up. Wasn't called a hygienist then just a check up and polish. They've been open a while now and I've got my first check up and clean next week and I can't wait! I won't be giving out their details just in case they get booked up. -
Sorry to hear your ancient! was that 1998? car won't pass the absurd ULEZ controls Sue! Elderly neighbours and friends of mine won't be able to drive from Lambeth to Southwark borough to visit family and friends because of this from October so I'm glad you've brought it up.

They are not supporting the government at the moment. Helen Hayes had her say in the Southwark News today and as usual she was allowed to exert her views in a local newspaper which has become very anti government.

Gala setting up on Peckham Rye
hammerman replied to beansprout's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Surprised that Southwark would let a festival/event go ahead on their green space anyway in the opening of Covid restrictions. Just down the road in Rye Lane shoppers have been restricted by the closure of the lane to buses and traffic since Southwark closed it all down to environmental issues. Seems like Southwark have seen the light and are now going to re-open the lane to buses and traffic. -
Glad you've brought this to the fore legalalien. Back in February my very vulnerable family member was posted lots of glossy leaflets by Southwark Council about how they are looking to build more social homes on top of blocks of flats in the area i.e. the Denmark Hill Estate. Family member is on the fourth floor with no lift. The plans are for lifts to be built and new flats to be plonked on top of the fourth, fifth, sixth etc. floors where these blocks of flats go to. Where there are any green spaces or garage spaces the Council wants that too for development.

I was reading the newspaper this morning and came across a small article in the sports pages which caught my eye. It was headed 'Fury as Kiwis pick trans weightlifter for Tokyo'. Very interesting reading.
