I'm amazed they didn't think to give it a bit of spin with a rebrand. 'Social mobility accelerator schools', perhaps. Too late now, Treez.

Might make an exception if Waitrose has got some panforte in though as just finished the last of the Xmas 2015 stockpile.

I plan to ignore it until 1 December at the earliest, otherwise the four months of relentless commercial nonsense these days means you've had enough long before you get to the day itself. One of the things I liked about living in the Netherlands was that until Sinter Klaas on 5 December no mentioned the C-word.

Deliveroo: please keep your cyclists safe
Robert Poste's Child replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in The Lounge
To be fair to Deliveroo, since all this started bothering me I've noticed that other delivery bikes like Pizza Hut etc have the same size box. Panniers not really a goer as they'd have to be wide enough to take an extra large pizza flat or all the toppings would slide off! It's the fact they're getting too close to traffic and sometimes pedestrians, and as they themselves can't see the box (behind them / no wing mirrors) - and in the dark other people can't till it's in front of them - it's all too easy for it to be clipped and that's enough to bring the bike down. I'm sure you're right about the business model, though. -

If any consolation I didn't look online for the contacts! I happened to have the booklet sitting on the side and they're on the last page. -

I think it's no longer scrolling as it's sold out. You could try turning up on the day anyway as often people don't show, particularly for the first couple of slots, so they have spaces to fill. -
Tonight's going to be another warm and sultry one apparently, so, for the OP's benefit, I tried filling a hot water bottle with cold water, chilling it for several hours in the fridge, then using it like you would a hot one to cool the bedding and to put my feet on. Worked pretty well and I didn't get any problems with condensation on the outside. I guess it could be used for children as well.

I recently got a new laptop with a trial version of McAfee anti-virus installed. Now that has run out I'm planning to revert to Windows Defender as I don't do much that's risky online and got by without any problems using MS Security Essentials on my old one. I've read that's Defender is OK but that it's a good idea to download Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit and their Anti-Malware too. Does that sound right, and is there anything else I should do? Would be grateful for advice from anyone who knows about these things.

How about a mobile hairdresser? I find it less stressful, as well as a bit cheaper, when they come to you, and it's good to know that although it's cheaper they themselves make more out of it. There are quite a few existing threads on hairdressers so you could search for those. If that's not an option for you, I can recommend Lynn at Balayage, close to the library. She's calm, kind and reassuring, and the salon itself is on the quieter side. A cut costs ?40 I think.

Thanks for that, Lazero. Excellent development. If they can teach them to cycle safely and considerately, even better. -
Badminton courts/clubs in East Dulwich?
Robert Poste's Child replied to Matteo80's topic in The Lounge
Dulwich College Sports Club has a weekly badminton night I believe. -
It can be a rather aggressive junction, particularly during rush hours, which hereabouts means the start and end of the school day. Another factor may be that although all pedestrians cross at the same time, the green men light up at different times, for example the Court Lane one is several clear seconds after the DV one. It's possible that a driver waiting to turn down Townley Rd, as the OP saw, may see that the closest one to them is still showing a red man and thinks they're still OK to go. Synchronising the lights properly would iron that out. I cycle through the junction several times a day so I'm used to it but I can imagine it catching people out.

Tiny Little Things That Cause You Irrational Rage
Robert Poste's Child replied to PinkyB's topic in The Lounge
Know what you mean. I hate it when I call a bank or some other company that does a security check and they ask for my DoB. Seems bad manners to keep reminding people how old they are. Also when you have to choose an age range online, particularly when you have to go up to the next band. I dread getting to the '70+' as nowhere to go after that. -
Famous bands I have slept through or don't remember seeing
Robert Poste's Child replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
Never been keen on bigger gigs myself as on the short side so don't get to see much apart from other people's shoulders. I was taken to a Prince of Wales Trust event in the mid-90s by someone with tickets for the VIP area and what I remember most is the free Magnums (no doubt alcohol too but as the female celebs were clearly not eating, in public anyway) and I was wearing a loose summer frock I had the field to myself. Vague memory of Alanis Morissette (which companion called music to have periods to) but not much else. -

Deliveroo: please keep your cyclists safe

Cycling through Kennington a couple of days ago I was nearly knocked off my own bike by a Deliveroo moped weaving in and out of traffic at speed, so at least I know it's not just this area; a few drivers clearly weren't happy either. Perhaps they're under pressure to deliver within a certain time and get penalties if they don't? I'm wondering if the look-ED-no-hands could be multiple sightings of the same person. -
Ali56, is there anyone you trust - close friend or family - who you can tell what's going on and get support from day to day? It sounds like your partner isn't able to see how his behaviour affects you so I wonder if that might help you get the confidence and validation (horrible word, sorry, but you know what I mean) you need in order to take whatever action you need to. Keep telling yourself that you are not responsible for your partner's feelings, words or actions. In a way the best thing you can do for him, as well as yourself, is to be clear that those are his choices.

No need, the hot weather seems to be over and we're back to normal. Saw my first duffle coat / woolly hat combo today. In AUGUST. John Lewis has Halloween stuff prominently on display and summer outdoor things reduced. So - what's everyone doing for Christmas?

Moving to Talfourd Road from East Dulwich - is it safe?
Robert Poste's Child replied to Lisa T's topic in The Lounge
It's pretty safe but all this area is a burglary hotspot so worth getting decent door, window and bike locks. Most muggings seem to involve people walking around with iphones or gold chains on display so as long as you're sensible you should be fine. -
Thinking about it, perhaps you could put a sheet, pillow or whatever you plan to wear to bed in the freezer, or chill a hot water bottle, or put your feet on one of those cold packs you use for picnics. If it's hot tonight I might try one of those and see what happens.
