  1. Did anyone else just briefly wish Maxwell back? Scary moment.
  2. God I'm going to miss the German sense of humour.
  3. Does that also create an opportunity for various people in the party to beg Boris to reconsider, do you think?
  4. I wasn't but he might have been.
  5. Someone in my LI networked received this in their change recently:

  7. He was with a mate, looked like he'd had a few drinks and I think I was just an easy target (small middle-aged female, alone, late evening). Maybe in his slightly inebriated state he thought I was from one of the eastern EU countries. Was tempted to give him a mouthful but you feel a bit vulnerable when you're on your own.
  8. A year or so ago a passing man in Finsbury Park randomly shouted at me to eff off back where I came from. I'm white English. It made me realise how that stuff has been bubbling away below the face for a long time.
  9. It could be PTSD. Did you go to a convent, Louisa?
  10. Bloody routemaster buses - in this weather hot, sticky and airless, and irresistibly attractive to people who forgot to wash or use deodorant this morning. Boris, you let us down.
  11. The Sunday Times seems to have manoeuvred Leadsom into a comment about herself being a mother and Theresa May not, and then turned it into a headline. Guess that implies who Murdoch supports. Just read the leadership ballot doesn't close till 9 Sept, so another two months of this to come...
  12. Another option is to call NHS 111 and tell them what you suspect you have, that it's painful and you're concerned about waiting until Wednesday as you think it's getting worse. They may be able to contact your doctor or refer you to an urgent care centre (or whatever they're called now).
  13. Train to City Thameslink and either walk or bus to Holborn.
  14. Boris has endorsed Leadsom. That's her out, then.
  15. The system seems designed to tire people out and make them go away. Without wishing to rehash all the previous comments on DMC, they have more people on their books than they can safely service and it's not fair on the local community.
  16. Poor you, that's horrendous service. It seems a thoroughly disrespectful way to treat people and their time. You could escalate it by complaining to the practice manager (I did that once before I left them a few years back) and also let James Barber know, cc Helen Hayes, as this kind of thing has been going on for years there and needs some pressure to sort it out.
  17. Apparently the MP for Streatham in the HoC today said that something needs to be done so hopefully that will help keep up the pressure.
  18. Re Andrea Leadsom's comments on gay marriage, apparently she thinks it should be redefined as a Christian sacrament between a man and a woman only. Sounds odd: gay couples aside, this seems to have implications for civil marriage, as well as for married people of other faiths. She has also talked about repealing the hunting bill on the grounds she represents a mainly rural community where foxes are a nuisance (she should visit this area - getting tired of scraping up fox poo recently). Baffling to think there's anyone who still genuinely thinks hunting is an efficient way to control foxes.
  19. > It's not a bank account, or even a share it's a property with tenants,it's not very liquid you just can't just switch! I didn't say it was liquid, and hopefully with that size of investment people are planning longer-term anyway, but, yes, you can sell up and put your money elsewhere. If/when the market drops we will quickly see that happen.
  20. After the last few years of over-confident Bullingdon boys, her background may have more popular appeal. Another reference point to Thatcher.
  21. Agreed; May seems preferable. While she has some attributes I'm not keen on, these aren't normal circs and she's shown herself capable of handling a crisis coolly, firmly and calmly. She's also a proven survivor, and we do need to be able to count on whoever it is not to jump ship when things get uncomfortable (Cameron, Boris, Farage...). Will Gove have to resign now? After going against Cameron and then turning against Boris, surely he's too much of a risk to the party.
  22. Have to agree to differ on that one then. The other one I've heard BTL owners use is 'it's my pension', said as though that somehow carries more moral weight.
  23. Radio London now agog with 'how do you feel about having a female PM' discussion, which is a bit disappointing as you'd hope that in 21st Century Britain, 30-whatever years after Thatcher and with Europe's strongest leader also a woman, we could discuss the candidates without their selection being qualified by being female. For what it's worth, of the available and interested candidates I think they chose the right two.
  24. They don't do it out of altruism. It's a gamble, like any investment, and if the risks are getting uncomfortable for the individual then they can choose to take the money out of property and stick it somewhere lower-risk, like an investment account. They have a choice. Have to say I do believe BTL owners are a blocker at the lower end of the market, and I've heard quite a few of them use the one about having their mortgage paid off for them. Maybe they're cliches because they're true.
