  1. ???? has a point. I have several teachers in my family who don't realise what it's like to work in the private sector. 60 hours a week is pretty normal for 'career' jobs, only (as one of my sisters points out) she gets three months holiday a year, never works longer than seven weeks without a break, and a final salary pension at the end that would need a bigger private pension pot than the rest of us could buld up on our own. Given how recent events are likely to affect jobs and pensions for many people I'm struggling to sympathise with a strike right now.
  2. If only she could not sound so annoyingly smug at times.
  3. No idea. Isn't James Barber LibDem? Could be worth asking him. Though with both major parties in disarray and fighting among themselves, if the LibDems had any political ambition left they would surely have leapt on this opportunity rather than remaining silent. Worrying how self-absorbed the leading political figures continue to be; maybe Boris wouldn't have been an ideal PM but in the last week his speeches did try to reassure the general population and build confidence in the future. The rest just seem to be empire-building or stabbing someone else in the back. Still can't believe how quick Cameron was to jump rather than do his job. And for a Tory PM to have broken up the UK in the same month as the Queen's 90th isn't going to look good in the history books, is it. If he gets a title after this I'll join the Socialist Workers, never mind the LibDems.
  4. How about an SNP-LibDem alliance?
  5. Looks like they agreed it before Gove put himself forward. Whatever next?
  6. Weirdly, all my family seem to have voted remain, even the right-wing ones who live in the sticks. After decades of fallouts we're now struggling with the idea that we may have shared values after all.
  7. Wonder if they're also responsible for the smell of weed that frequently seems to linger outside the shop. Can't be the people in the shop, not after that job ad.
  8. The most worrying part is the increasing rise of the right in many countries, using immigration to stir people up. The people who voted leave because they didn't think it would actually happen may have helped to unleash something far, far worse. I met an elderly Austrian today who said it feels similar to the stories she grew up with about the thirties. Very concerning.
  9. It would be naive to assume that London and Scotland voted remain for the same reasons, though. I'm for the People's Republic of Dulwich. We already have a benevolent faceless dictator. Annex Denmark Hill so we have the hospital, and what else do you need? It would be like Passport to Pimlico.
  10. Gove would be worse. Utterly charmless and in a way the embodiment of the more machine-like aspects of the EU system he wanted to leave. And his wife would be even more annoying than Cherie Blair. Boris is admittedly flawed and shows poor judgement at times but he has warmth and does connect with people. Actually I'm rather hoping his father will run for something rather than commenting from the sidelines.
  11. From your mouth to God's ears. One good thing that should come out of this is the demise of Ukip as there wasn't much else of note on their agenda.
  12. Farage's behaviour over the last 48 hours suggests serious character flaws: not showing up for the final debate in favour of having dinner with his son, and last night apparently assuming defeat straight away. Hope no one feels they have to offer him any post-EU role that requires real leadership.
  13. Cameron - surely the most incompetent PM in modern times. If only he'd resigned after the last election.
  14. The weather the last few weeks must have given the flood defences something to do. Does anyone know more about how they're performing - would we have had flooded roads and houses without them? Over the winter there was some standing water which killed off the grass and marooned some gym equipment but I think they did more work to sort those out. When I cycled through earlier there was very little surface water visible, despite the big leak next to the S Circ, which is still gushing away. I know we all complained about the disruption and the work seemed to take over both parks for a long time, but it looks like it was the right thing to do.
  15. James, The path/cycle route that joins Greendale to DHFC is very overgrown now due to all the wet weather, to the point that it's making things a bit hazardous, particularly for the little children who use it to and from school. Do you know who I can contact for help with this? Thanks.
  16. Someone told me used coffee grounds work (not tea).
  17. In a past thread on foxes someone recommended marking your own territory by putting early-morning pee (ideally male) in an old washing-up liquid bottle with some garlic, leaving it to ferment for a few days, then spraying it regularly where they've been marking and around gateposts and any other entry points. I did this for a while when there was a lot of poo appearing in my garden (and on my front doormat, delightfully), and it seemed to do the trick. It also appeals to me as a way to use up all those horrible discarded water bottles full of orange liquid, though so far I haven't been brave enough to open one.
  18. It's not just about manners, though I agree that's important, it's about teaching safety awareness so they know how to avoid hurting or intimidating other people. Intimidating sounds over the top, I know, but an elderly neighbour feels she can't go out alone because of the risk of being knocked down. American-style helicopter parenting means parents are usually on hand to pick up the pieces and apologise on their behalf if necessary, but still.
  19. I signed the petition too, and wrote to my MP. The situation has become too unstable and emotive, and we are simply not in a position to make a considered, informed, rational decision. Defer it, work with EU partners to sort out migration (I've yet to hear why remaining or leaving would fix this automatically), reform from within and leave - if we must - from a position of mutual strength and goodwill. If it was a good enough argument for staying in Iraq, where we had no right to be, how much more should it apply now. And to those who want to show migrants what British looks like, arguably a good way would be to stiffen the upper lip, stay in and sort it out.
  20. Would this come under the Dulwich Estate? Although they do some great work they're not great at remembering to engage with real people and can come across as high-handed at times, but I should think they'd act on it if contractors are disturbing the peace or working outside permitted hours.
  21. No, but you could follow the cycle route through Burgess Park etc. I may give that a try.
  22. How about the ruined chapel in Nunhead Cemetery? I've seen events there. Or the old hall cafe in Brockwell Park? Or the pavilion cafe in Dulwich Park? Your guests could go boating.

Yes, sadly you're right - although Network Rail seems to have it timetabled still, under status there's a slightly confusing message about engineering works till 2018. Feel sad now; one of my favourite ways to Trafalgar Sq. How long would it take to walk from D Hill to Waterloo - an hour maybe?
