Blue recycling bin gone missing
intexasatthe moment replied to jenniejenjen10's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
sophiesofa - you can mix paper and glass ( and other recyclable stuff ) in same bin . Mixed recycling ?Kerbside properties will be able to mix all of their recyclable items together in one container, with no more need to separate out different waste types. Have a look here http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200084/recycling_and_waste/2212/service_changes -
Goodrich: Academy proposals
intexasatthe moment replied to Gubodge's topic in The Family Room Discussion
LynP - Yes an Academy by it's very nature can provide the equipment that makes it very attractive but what good is that without fantastic teachers? Spot on with your remark about teachers , not that Academy status will guarantee good teaching . But the first part of your remark is a misconception I think . Maybe the additional freedom to juggle their own budget will enable Goodrich to buy extra equipment ,but there won't be any additional money ,so it will be robbing Peter to pay Paul . AFAIK these new style Academies will receive ?25,000 for legal and organisational costs involved in converting . To me that's money merely for the sake of administrative reform . Where does that money come from ? Surely it could be more gainfully spent elsewhere ? The Academy movement is a political act ,privatising and further fragementing our education system . -
What would you have done?

Fuschia - it's too complicated isn't it ,trying to explain your position and thinking to this guy ? Who knows what he has going on in his head and his life . No I wouldn't have said sorry ,and I wouldn't have agonised over what I could/should have said . -
What would you have done?

I was just responding to the bus thread . Still think saying nothing is best way forward . -

Returning to orginal question - what would you have done ? Said nothing ,why bother ? Sometimes it's not all about finding the " right answer " or even proving that you're in the right . -
You can't use the green bin for garden waste ...but the paper bags are much stronger and more resilent than they look . I've never had any difficulties using them for garden waste disposal .

I think it's probably down to the individual cat's nature but ..... our cats have been on dried food all their life ( pet shop had them on it ,moistened with water ,when we bought them as kittens ,no idea how weaned ) and never show the slightest interest in wet food ( weeell a passing sniff at tuna ) . They never go on work surfaces . But cats love amonia smell /bleach so possibly check what you're cleaning work tops with ,in case it's encouraging them ?

The English Heritage report is incredible . Not read it all ,still reeling at the pics of Rye Lane packed ( and I mean packed ) at 10 o'clock at night with promenading teenagers . A " Monkey Walk " Who knew ! Check out pages 28 and 29 .

Where is the best place to buy a smartphone please?
intexasatthe moment replied to AGW3's topic in The Lounge
Thanks H. What I wanted clarification on ( I think ! ) was ...if one buys a phone without a SIM card will it work with the card from my basic Nokia joby and the Tesco's network that I use ,or would it be likely to be locked to some other network ? Hope that makes sense and I'm not talking rubbish . -
I thought The Rye offered this service ? But maybe I dreamt it !

Where is the best place to buy a smartphone please?
intexasatthe moment replied to AGW3's topic in The Lounge
I'm embarrassed to show my ignorance here but ...if a buy a smartphone thingy that connects to the internet without a sim card ( like those advertised on the link above ) can I put my Tesco's PAYG sim card into it and it will work ? -

Oh dear I don't seem to be making my point very well do I ? You had said " Good grief. The council does something for nothing and people complain about it ." I just thought ( still do ) that people shouldn't expect Southwark to cut their garden hedge for them and that saying such an action was for free missed the point that there is a cost involved . I must have missed your post where you say you pay your council tax and don't begrudge it . I thought ( obviously wrongly ) that your comment " I get feck all from the council for my ?1000+ a year "gave the impression that you saw council tax very much in terms of what you personally got out of it. However James has explained that Southwark seek to recover the cost of cutting hedges so hopefully this won't reduce monies available for other things like repairing roads and pavements . ( Which funnily enough aren't only used by my mother .) I mentioned my personal interest in negotiating pavements in response to another poster who I felt had implied that I might have a different view if I too experienced difficulties . And as you seem interested - I have no children at school ,don't live in council housing ,am not in receipt of home care or meals on wheels and I maintain my own garden . I do however benefit from living in a borough that does provide such services and this ,in turn ,benefits me personally .

I'm inclined to agree with Sillywoman . -
They're not EDMummy ,that's my point . My reference was to a few posts ( not all on this thread ,so I understand your confusion ) like this Oooh - don't complain. Saved me a job as the (shared) hedge was starting to take over the pavement. The council has my thanks for that little effort. I get feck all from the council for my ?1000+ a year, so it did make a nice surprise . Good grief. The council does something for nothing and people complain about it .
-
Well, lets hope you are not trying to push a buggy, walk with the aid of a walking stick/frame or are visually impaired trying to make it down some of our smaller streets! You hope away for what you want - one of my hopes would be that Southwark could spend some money on the pavements around my elderly mother's house so that when I'm pushing her in a wheelchair ,or when she's taking a few independent steps ,life isn't so fraught . Perhaps there would be more money available for such works if people weren't under the impression that it's a jolly freebie if Southwark cuts their privet hedge for them .
-
The council does something for nothing - sorry to be pedantic but Southwark is not doing something for nothing . There is a cost involved - and personally I'd rather that it wasn't added to my council tax.

Ladymuck - I picked up the leaflet advertising them from the Peckham branch ...so I guess the Peckham branch will have them . If I get the chance I'll pop in on Thurs and let you know .
