  1. It does sound as though LED family have been thoroughly traumatised I have low low tolerance for bad behaviour and have perfected this very passive aggressive technique of giving very angry stares to children on the brink of feral behaviour. I do detest soft play type places and playgrounds for that matter - seems to bring out the worst in kids and parents (who mostly seem to be doing their best to ignore their kids). On the few occasions I have been, I spent all my time saying 'hey, watch it.. I'm watching you.....'. which I think is awful ,what a shame to feel you have to avoid playgrounds and soft play .
  2. James - I'm shocked by your remarks about Deptford Green and by your reference to Harris Boys's admissions policy not taking distance into account .Which of course it does . Maybe you didn't mean the latter to be read like this . But I find the former unforgiveable . Are you having a bad day ? Coming down with something ? Seems out of character .
  3. Hi - I've only skim read your post ,too much info for my little brain . But I've always thought hoe good it would be to have a kind of speaking tube attached to pushchair so that pusher and child could easily communicate .
  4. However at crystal palace they don't hand them out like sweets like the boys school do. They hand them out like sweets at the boys schools ? Do they ,why would that be ? And why the difference ?
  5. Kingsdale is meant to be a fantastic school . Some discussion here http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,629067 but put Kingsdale in the search box ,top right of page . I'm certain that your daughter will love Kingsdale and will do really well .
  6. Kylie - that's awful for you and him . How's he going to learn anything if he feels like that ? Sadly discipline always seems to be the corner stone in schools trying to establish themseves/turn themselves around . They seem to treat all the children the same - as if they're all feral hoodlums who have to be broken. They don't seem able to treat children as individuals . You must make sure that the school understand how much this is impacting on his learning - how are they going to help him ? He's just as important as all the potential troublemakers that they're trying to mold .
  7. If there's a banding expert around ,( or possibly just someone who understands numbers ,unlike me )it would be good to hear their views on banding . I'm afraid I find it confusing . I understand that Harris schools have a banding system based on national scores ,so obviously aimed at getting a school population that reflects national attainment . Which maybe is not very different from Southwark's profile ? But I think the middle bands in popular schools can be very hard to get into and you need to be living very near the school . Sorry ,not adding anything to the debate here ,just expressing my confusion !
  8. Ever heard of crossing bridges when you come to them ?
  9. well, and banding of course . Though not the same system of banding that Kingsdale use.
  10. Ok ,we have Open Office but son does coursework ,school computer converts into Word which he then can't edit back home . Though no doubt I'm missing something here ,but not knowledgable enough to persue.. So was thinking would buy Word - looking on line but getting confused . Can find this http://www.software4students.co.uk/Microsoft_Office_2010_Professional_Plus-details.aspx?gclid=CMmv0ZD3wacCFcod4QodJTglAg but would that be ok ? Amazon have some that say Product Key code only - ? We have a Dell laptop which seems to have Microsoft Office Word 2007 loaded ,but needs a Product Key . We have only one machine and would ( according to DS ) need Excel for data handling and drawing graphs . Any advice gratefully received ....
  11. Thanks for that - was worried by the awful banging in our pipes ,thinking ( as much as one can at 4.30 am ) that it was some dreadful plumbing disaster about to unfold .
  12. Fierce airlocks in kitchen cold water supply this morning . Could the mains water have gone off in night ? Anyone else with problems ? Thames Water site says nada.
  13. High protein , low/no carb lunch is a good energy boost . Fish /meat + salad ...
  14. I can only assume that the allocation of scholarship places from the waiting list must be according to some score ,the person with the highest aptitude ( though how one measures aptitude as opposed to attainment I don't know .. ) must get the next place . But ( I'm sure to most people's relief ) I'm giving up the struggle to understand it now .
  15. Debi it's kind of you to go over this again . I did find the earlier thread and copied the relevant bit - hoping that you wouldn't need to . I understand that the number of scholarships initially offered exceeds the 15 % .I just wondered how they choose a replacement candidate when/if a scholarship person drops out . But this query isn't addressed to you ,as you've said ,you're a parent ,not a representative of the school . Which is not to say that your comments haven't all be really helpful.
  16. The bit about scholarships is here I think Scholarships: According to the selection criteria, 15% of the intake must include children awarded a scholarship. But more than this figure are initially offered scholarships. This is not 'manipulation' or a 'cynical ploy'. They have to do it this way because there's a good chance that not every one in this position would take up a place at the school, even if it was offered (as in the case of gwod on this thread). So they have no choice but to award more than that 15% figure. I've spent a long time looking but I can't see any advice on how they decide who to offer the place to if a scholarship person drops out .
  17. After looked after children ,siblings ,and I presume children with statements ,priority is given according to how close you live to the school" Which school are you referring to intexas? Dorothy - sorry ,all getting a bit confusing ,that remark was in reply to someone asking about The Charter's catchement area .
  18. Mmm , Kingsdale's site ,under Admissions says Please refer to scholarship oversubscription criteria for more information but I couldn't find the details . Maybe it's available on request ?
  19. Mrs D as someone who has also opposed buiding works /development next to me ,you have my sympathies that people are treating you so suspiciously . I don't think that everyone who registers and expresses a view about something is always someone to be viewed suspiciously .
  20. I'm not sure I understand either - I guess it means that you're tested and found to be scholorship material and then ,once the intake is divided into 3 bands ,the scholorship people get a place and don't have to be selected by lottery ? I've not looked at Kingsdale's explanation of how they deal with oversubscription for scholorships - will look later when I have time .
  21. My reading of Kingsdale's admission policy is that they divide the intake into 3 ability bands and then allocate places by giving priority to SEN , looked after children , scholorships, and siblings and then allocate remainder by lottery . I think it says that 15% of places are scholorships . Is that selection ? Perhaps I'm not getting it . Wonder ,by the way , how many scholorship places go to people in the 2 lower ability bands ? When you say new government standards ,do you mean Gove's baccalaureate thing ? I think lots of really good schools seem to have done poorly if you judge them by how many passes in a random selection of subjects ( which they didn't know they had to offer to pass Gove's retrospective test ) they got . I think it's great Kingsdale have improved ,it's geographical position has always worked against it in the past .
  22. After looked after children ,siblings ,and I presume children with statements ,priority is given according to how close you live to the school . How close you need to be to get in will vary according to who else has applied so the catchment area will vary from year to year .
  23. Well put Dorothy ,still suffering affects of failing ( ie didn't lie to get into Charter ) to get a place at a good local secondary school here .
  24. lukedaisy - Waverley became a Harris Academy in 2006 and has been improving since then . Kingsdale went into special measures in 1996 and Steve Morrison - the headteacher - joined in 1998 since when he's transformed the school which has also undergone a major refurb . http://www.dulwichsociety.com/2010-autumn/560-kingsdale-foundation-school
  25. Yes I agree ,Charter sounds fantastic and ,like Kingsdale was a terrible school ( in it's previous existence as William Penn ) that no local people wanted to send their children to . Do you think it's catchement area is comparable though ? I feel it's in quite a uniformly middle class area where parents might be tempted to go private but would try state . Kingsdale has always seemed out on a limb to me ,close to upper middle class households ( well ,even more expensive houses than those near Charter ) where parents more likely to go private and the Kingsdale estate . I don't think Kingsdale is guilty of jiggery -pokery at all ,just trying to get a balanced intake .
