  1. gina - what were the great summer activities you would have loved to have been doing at that age ,if you'd lived here then ? Learning to drive - good idea . Ah yes ,the lure of electronics !
  2. Just wondering - any luck finding temp work ? What sort of work ? Leisure activities ? Especially if 17 year old lacks local social group/friends . Think desperation will be setting in at my house .

  4. No of course you're not being silly ,I can quite understand your vision of 2 little girls . It's probably not very correct but I feel as I have a boy I can say it - boys and girls are so different . Especially at toddler stage . I used to long for a little girl who'd sit still for more than 2 minutes and who might like to colour in . ( of course I know that not all girls are like that ). You'll love your little boy to bits when he gets here . But you're not being silly to feel sad that you're not having a girl .
  5. Not knowing who land belongs to is not a material consideration. We decision on the merits of a Planning Application not who owns land I understand that an applicant who includes land in his application that he doesn't own ,has to serve a notice on the person who does own it . If no notice is served then ,again as I understand it ,the planning application is invalid . This is my understanding from info.supplied by Southwark Council . No doubt it's more complicated or something ,sure I'll be shot down for contributing .
  6. It never crossed my mind that the schools weren't taking an equal number from each band . And if they don't ,I'm not quite sure of the point of banding . I'm guessing that KIngsdale's pupils will live some distance away from the school because a lot of the immediate housing is so expensive ( excluding Kingsdale Estate I guess ) that I think most of the residents probably send children to private schools . But it's all very complicated isn't it .
  7. Regarding allocating places across the bands and achieving a comprehensive intake - I'm confused . I thought this ( from a Harris Academy on oversubscription ) The allocation of the remaining places will take place under a framework of fair banding where all applicants will undertake a nonverbal reasoning test. These applicants will be placed in nine ability bands depending on the score an applicant achieves. This process is to ensure a comprehensive intake into the academy. would ensure a comprehensive intake . What am I missing ? Is it because this covers the oversubscription ? Not sure how they do it ,if the nos of year 7 places is 130 ,and only 129 apply can they select those 129 how they like ? Sorry if being stupid here .
  8. The park is very close to the Maudsley ,so I guess this may have been someone with mental health issues ,or substance abuse . I love the paddling pool in this park ,but otherwise just find it incredibly depressing . Though handy to take inpatients at Kings for some fresh( ish ) air .

  10. I second what Peckham rose says . A lot of people think of Lordship Lane as " the Lane " ( always makes me smile ) and quickly scanning your post might lead to confusion .
  11. Yes I heard these - thought they were explosions . Seems odd just to have 2 fireworks set off .
  12. for handing in my wallet with all my cards to Peckham Police Station . They wouldn't let me take your details down so I can't contact you directly ,but if you read this please PM me . I am enormously grateful.
  13. sending virtual hugs definitely go and find your haematology consultant how dreadful for you
  14. "intervention " is I think ( haven't quite got the hang of school speak ,though I know that most sentences should include the word " aspiration " ) another term for booster or revision . But I think more with the emphasis on " catch up " than revision .
  15. I think one of the things that worries me most is the fragmentation of the education system so that there are winners and loosers . In Southwark we already have state funded secondary schools with widely differing admissions criteria being run by different bodies .I can't even vote ( as I could when Southwark controlled the secondary schools ) to change Southwark' political colour - I just have to sit back and watch Lord Harris ,Kingsdale ,Charter decide how they think my taxes should be spent in these state schools . Across the country all the most succesful schools can move out of local authority control leaving the authorities with diminshed budgets to look after the schools with the most difficulties. Our education system is already divisive enough as it is with private schools ,but this way we'll end up with 3 tiers - private schools ,privately run state schools /Academies and local government schools at the bottom of the pile . And you'd better hope that your children have no need of a special school - where will they fit into the above picture ?
  16. Hi - Chemistry ok as far as I can judge ," yes ,I think I did well " . We'll know in August ... Biology today ,Physics tommorrow . At least the A level exams are less spread out . Wish I could anticipate end of exams with more cheerfulness - but it's going to be a long summer ,further extended by delayed start to Autumn term because of building works at his school . ( bit gloomy today ,sorry )
  17. Tad harsh I feel ,lower years to consider . And then all those " intervention " classes they have to provide...
  18. There won't be any local education authorities - or ones with only the weakest most troubling schools to manage - if the current political thinking about more schools becoming Academies carries on . Academies keep the funding that local authorities get for providing support and manage their own schools . So Lord Harris with his chain of schools replaces Southwark Education Authority . Primary schools will be next into the fold I guess.
  19. Oh yes womanofdulwich - the void of study leave ,trying to keep the momentum up . By the time they get to year 13 it feels like it's one endless round of resits .early sits ,mocks ,study leave ... How the poor teachers get any time to actually teach the syllabus ,I don't know !
  20. I know when I was in same situation 2 decades ago ,it was down to offering places to children with special needs
  21. What to do ,what to do - the agony is killing me . Just wish my son was equally stressed - and yes ,before you say it - no doubt all my fault for stressing on his behalf. Picture the scene - driving son to school in Pimlico for A level Chemistry exam( because didn't get a place at any local schools a decade ago ,Charter just opening and parents of peers all lying to get a place and I was too high minded to do same ,silly me ) forgotten calculater - do we turn back ,go on ...? Will hopeless son miss start of exam wandering around looking for replacement ... All you people stressing about primary school places - think what this might mean in terms of secondary schools and don't get caught like me ! Anyone else in A level agony ?
