Cat killed by dog on Oakhurst Grove - 22 November (Lounged)

Good work ,Alex ! -
One thing which i think helps and was done - maybe still is - at Dulwich Village Infants was to have a whole class of January intake ,so that they're all new together. The classes - 2 September intake and the one January intake were mixed up ,in year 1 I think . Of course this also causes debate with friendships formed in reception being disrupted by children being placed in different classes .
-
My son is late July birth . Couldn't get into school nursery because places offered to older kids so went to preschool. Joined school in January knowing no one and completely agree with PGC - very hard for Jan intake to join a half class that's benefitted from being a small group with more teacher and TA input. Friendships already formed. January children have to fit into a group that already knows routines etc. Didn't find school very helpful in briefing parents either - got the impression they'd been through everything once at the shiny start of term and were lacking motivation to go through it all again in the cold post Christmas days . Talking about things like book bags ,changing reading books ,class assemblies ,library visits ,bringing fruit in etc, etc. Would say son definitely suffered socially ,emotionally and confidence wise and has yet ,many years later ,to catch up. Think it's more about confidence than what is actually taught /learnt ,which theoretically could be covered at home . Think boys are younger emotionally than girls and that it does affect them. Though obviously everyone is different and I'm making generalisations based on own experience.

Advice wanted - Baby won't take bottles..
intexasatthe moment replied to amydown's topic in The Family Room Discussion
This thread is helpful and has advice on bottles/teats. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,315026,315292#msg-315292 -
Thanks BARA - good for people to be advised of this . Would you know if it's possible to be on a mailing list re agendas for Community Councils ? Does Southwark publicise agenda items of common interest ( improvements to Rye Lane ) ? Peckham library had no notices ,does one have to look on line somewhere ? Sorry if this seems dense and apologies if you're not right person to ask.

new cycle access consultation
intexasatthe moment replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for posting consultation doc Greg. Mellors ,I don't use this route during rush hour ( when cycling ) so perhaps have different view . Maybe during the rush hour there is not quite the crush of pedestrians ,shopping etc as there is at other times. Also ,assume that with contra flow bikes will be travelling in both directions along this stretch ,will there be 2 bike lanes then ? Anyone know ? -
new cycle access consultation
intexasatthe moment replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for encouragement Eileen ,wasn't sure if it would be appropriate ! I really am concerned about this - apart from what I feel is the unsuitability of making this stretch a contra flow for cyclists ,I think the impact on the junction of Rye Lane and Hanover Park ( by Primarks ) is also going to be very tricky. The proposals talk about cyclists" coming from Peckham High St " ( presumably via the contra flow ) being able "to safely exit this stretch of Rye Lane into Hanover Park under traffic Signal control " . Helpful ,possibly ,but most will want to carry on up Rye Lane and there is no mention of how this will work . Phased lighting just for bikes ? At the moment no traffic comes across this junction up Rye Lane so it's going to be a major shift to re educate everyone. Feel anxious that with number of pedestrians at this junction and with bendy buses turning right from Hanover Park into Rye Lane things will go wrong... My other concern is that Southwark really haven't thought this through ,but that they will go ahead with the proposals because a rethink would cause a delay .They can't risk a delay or they will loose their funding . I've already been told ,when querying extent of consultation over this, that the deadline for comments can't be extended for that reason i.e. a delay would jepordise funding. My natural reaction is to assume that the powers that be know what they're doing ,but I'm mindful of the debacle that was the rising bollards in exactly the same spot and wonder if this was a result of a similar need to rush things through . -

Well as time is short - comments in by 17 Nov - and as name and phone number have already been in SLP , if anyone feels that they would like to have their view considered - the contact details for person dealing with this is Clement Aygei-Frempong 0207 525 2305 ( which is a direct line ) Clement.Aygei-Frempong or I guess I could email him with a link to this thread ? -
new cycle access consultation
intexasatthe moment replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Well it's only a very short section of Bellenden that's one way - safer I'd have thought to introduce a contra flow down there than in the proposed section of Rye Lane . And as I ,and most other cyclists I see ,use it informally as a contra flow then I imagine Southwark will soon "formalise " it . In fact I thought they were planning to do so. Don't think reducing pavement space in Rye Lane would be feasible. -
new cycle access consultation
intexasatthe moment replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Mmm - I can see this from both sides as I cycle ( and I choose to by pass this stretch and go up Bellenden ,past Lidls ) but my elderly ,visually impaired mum frequently uses this stretch of Rye Lane to access Morrisions and Smiths and I think that increasing the flow of cyclists will seriously hamper her and other pedestrians ( and I think that the lemming like quality alluded to is a result of large numbers using a confined space ) I understand that there is a view that if this already happens ( which I realise it does ) that it should be legitimised - but I'm not sure I agree with it in this case. Who knows what the large number of pedestrians who use this road think , I do feel a broader consultation could have been attempted. -
I'm still patiently waiting for a response to my queries about secondary school admission criteria how can parents understand an admissions system where the criteria vary so much ? how can schools be compared if they are operating different admission criteria ? why do the Harris Academies have a banding system that references national ,rather than local, attainment ? how does the banding system work ? eg where some bands are oversubscribed how is the selection made ? I'm being patient because don't councillors do all their council work in their spare time ?
-
Hi - there is a consultation in progress re ,amongst other improvements to area, introducing a cycle contra flow along the part of Rye Lane that passes between Boots and Smiths. Feel concerned that this won't be safe for either pedestrains or cyclists. The pavements and road in this part of Rye Lane are very congested and have heavy useage by bendy buses. Also concerned that if this is a consultation ,it should have wider publicity . Understand discussed at Community Council but when I tried to collect consultation leaflet from Peckham library ,they had none and knew nothing about it. Closing date for comments is 17 Nov . I have consultation doc but the file is too large to attach here.

Chener Books gets a facelift

and details of your book are......? -
Good on you for perservering Sue. I'm still devestated that Southwark allowed a mature tree ( Elm Grove / Highshore junction vicinity) with preservation order to be cut down . It was in a front garden and deal was that owners replaced it - which they have with an 18" tree that's going to take many decades to mature and is in no way a replacement. Good luck.

Hi James - I'm still worrying away about the varying admissions criteria for the secondary schools and hoping that you can reassure and shed light. I just don't understand how ,on top of the faith schools and their admissions criteria, how Southwark can have allowed a situation where Kingsdale operates a 3 band and lottery system ( plus scholarships ) and the Charter use geograhical proximity. And the Harris Academies have a 9 band system related to national values. Presumably this is to ensure an intake that will achieve exam results in line with national results - but if other Southwark schools don't operate this system won't it skew the intake in favour of Harris Academies and make it hard for parents to compare performance ? And how are shortfalls /oversubscriptions for bands dealt with ? ( I just know I'm not going to be able to understand the answer to this question ,but would like to try !) And then there's Bacons admission policy ,different again. Why don't they all have the same admissions criteria ? How can parents make sense of all this ?

ED Nature Watch
intexasatthe moment replied to Peckhamgatecrasher's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Squirrels will certainely make off with a whole net and hook. I'm no nature expert but I've read that small birds like blue tits loose so much of their energy/body weight overnight ( especially when cold nights come ,like now ) that if they head to a spot where there's normally food and find none ,then they are in trouble because they lack the energy to look further afield. Apparently if you start feeding them, putting out peanuts etc, then it's important to continue. -
holidays during term-time - any views?
intexasatthe moment replied to redjam's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Except that year 11's finish their GCSE's weeks before the end of the summer term. Same with AS. Expect you realise this already - but it took me by surprise when my son was in year 11 so just mentioning in case you don't. -
James, are you any closer to clarifying you're original belief that Southwark's secondary schools "have agreed common admissions criteria "? This is a real concern to me ,the admissions criteria for Southwark secondary schools vary hugely . How can this be helpful to parents when trying to compare schools ( surely if schools have different criteria for selecting their intake ,they will have different outcomes ) or even understand the secondary transfer process? Never mind the stress for the children in having to sit the tests required for the schools that operate a banding system. And how does the banding work - if for example they have an oversubscription of children for one band ? And why do the Harris Academies use banding that reflects national rather than local values. And without wishing to criticise ( honestly ) how could you think that our secondary schools have common admissions ctiteria ?
