Could we have some detail on the criteria used to decide which sponsor to go with ? As promised earlier James Barber March 12, 03:31PM "I anticipate the decision we take having a clear explanation of how we reached it. Supporters can rthen withdraw their support. One of the joys with obvious disbenefits is the Steering Group is able to make quick decisions. " ( In reply to kirstymacs " But the Steering Group must have some process in place for deciding who that provider will be - its not unreasonable to ask that question is it? " ) simonethebeaver March 12, 03:55PM We will also be happy to explain exactly why we chose that provider -
Denmothersmith ,I think JB has pipped you to the post with calling " sour grapes " poor looser and generally heaping vitriol on The Charter school . As you say not the best grounds for a new school venture . I think Derek Hill's post above at 12.23 answers your question about The Charters plans regarding expansion .
-
Scruffy Mummy - well we don't really know what people want do we ? Thankfully as Derek Hill has pointed out the decision will be made by the DoE and not by a finger in the wind of EDF posts . Glad that distance wasn't putting people off from applying to Academy@Peckham . They are undersubscribed ,it will take several years before the pupils of the feeder primary school are of secondary school age and the new school opening on the Aylesbury estate will reduce demand . And I note from many posters that they feel it is urgent to have extra places now .

Belle - James has expressed the opinion that the DoE might suggest that The Charter expand their existing site . He regards this as a bad thing ,a " danger " . But surely ,if that were possible ( and I have no idea whether it is but presume James must have based his remark on some knowledge I don't have ) that's an excellent thing if speed is the prime motivator here ? I don't feel speed is the most important factor here but surely for those of you who do , an existing site is better than one that hasn't yet been obtained ?

Could we have detail about the scoring system and the ctiteria used to rank potential sponsors ? I see that you've already said " They don't have experience of the free school process. They originally thought they could bang out an application in a few weeks. " and that it was a " danger " that the DoE might suggest The Charter expand on it's existing site and that Charter parents might not want this . Leaving aside the fact that we don't know what Charter parents might want ,surely having an existing site that could ( if that were to be confirmed ) expanded is a good thing ? Not to mention more cost effective than purchasing a new site . Purchase of land on the hospital site hasn't happened yet has it ? -
Peckham incident - air ambulance at Choumert
intexasatthe moment replied to Nigello's topic in The Lounge
Well ,gossip or rubber necking ,I'm grateful for the thread . My mum lives just off Rye Lane and being very elderly is getting a little muddled and anxious about things . She often hears noises in the night and wonders what they are ,details about incidents in the area help me relate to her . She was recently convinced that a full scale rehearsal for evacuating the area in the event of flooding had taken place over night . You might think that knowing there'd been a stabbing ,traffic accident or whatever is no help but at least I know there is often some real basis for her concerns .Sometimes I can even reassure her . -
thanks for that 73 ,my mum usually gets flowers from one of my overseas siblings and I was wondering if he'd forgotten . He always uses M&S .
-
But sadly not Peckham Rye .

windows 8 frozen cursor and touchpad
intexasatthe moment replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in The Lounge
Thank you all . Dulwich Fox have noted those combinations ,I think I have sometimes inadvertenly hit the Fn button . Do those combos just affect the touchpad or would they also affect the cusor ? In the end ,having run a routine maintenance ( and noted that on my settings for this I did not have the " wake my computer up at the scheduled time " button ticked ) things seem ok . On a different note whatever activates highlighting and correcting of incorrect spelling ,and whatever automatically makes a webaddress appear as a link ( as opposed to something that has to be copied into address bar ) have been disabled . Predates other issue . -
Louisa sorry you're ill and I would agree with advice about probiotics .I would recommend these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Udos-Choice-Super-8-Probiotics/dp/B0036E5KG6 which they sell in Health Matters ( in the fridge ) in Lordship Lane . Would just add that popcorn is very indigestible . I have some digestion problems and tried pop corn ,thinking it bland and safe ,and had terrible repercussions . The NHS dietician that I see said popcorn known for being hard to digest . Think white rice is generally recommended . You might also want to try some Dioralyte or other rehydration drink if you have diarreah or vomiting .

Tried a system restore to a couple of weeks before yesterdays " critical update " and tho this unfroze touchpad and cursor ,all my desktop shortcuts no longer worked and clicking on them resulted in an error message ,something about " unable to find locale data ,please re install " . I've never had this with a system restore before and it made me nervous ,so I undid the system restore . But now I'm back to a frozen cursor and touchpad . Anyone any ideas as to how I can unfreeze cursor and touchpad ? I'm not very savvy .

Thank you Ella .

I'm sure it would make a huge difference .We've had to move both our bikes indoors after one was stolen from the rear of our property where it was locked securely to a wheelbarrow and the access was down a side paasageway with a locked door . I'm currently not cycling partly due to health considerations but partly because of the physical effort involved in hauling my bike downstairs ( and on return back up ) before I can get on the road . I would be thrilled to have a nearby hangar and didn't realise about applying for storage .Presume one applies as part of a group for funding ? How ,when .who to ? But was sure I read a post from JB on hangars saying that Southwark had refused applications on grounds of not wanting more street clutter .So this must be a change of heart . Exciting news .

Can anyone recommend a structural engineer to look at cracks and advise on cause ? Is it normal practice for insurance brokers to request engineers report ,photos ,quotes for repair to accompany claim ? Cracks have reappeared 2 1/2 years on since works carried out to correct subsidence under previous claim - when inspection carried out by firm appointed by brokers with no prior submission by me from structural engineer .
-
Louisa can I ask if the boiler got fixed and ,if you were happy with the service ,which central heating person you chose ?
-
Who was it stolen from ? You don't own the space outside your house do you Louisa ? As has been pointed out before I believe . And I agree with StraferJack .

grabot my plan would be to take a less short term view ,to stop focusing on the perceived need to have a school within walking distance and to take the longer route of getting Southwark to open another school . And in the meantime encouraging local families to get together and apply en masse to The Academy at Peckham - a local school with loads of space ,excellent facilities ,co ed ,non faith and just waiting ,as Kingsdale did ,for an injection of middle class families and their children . To look further afield at other schools in London and to stop regarding being able to walk to a local school as such an important factor . Many of us have accessed other schools which have entailed travel ,and those of us with children who have problems with organisational skills have found that in the long run this benefits their child in developing skills which will help them cope in the world after school . I had to travel with my similarly challenged son for the first few months of his secondary school career - we didn't sit together and it meant difficult choices regarding my working hours but I made it work because I had to . And the benefits to him in learning how to use public transport in London outweighed the disadvantages to me . And to campaign for the re introduction of the ILEA so that there can be a London wide strategic plan for education across London . Or is it preferable that a few more million pounds be spent when the parents in the Nunhead/Ivydale want a secondary school they can walk to ? There's not a limitless supply of cash ,if it's spent in one place it can't be spent elsewhere . I appreciate that these are long term aims and less palatable than an immediate gratification of wishes , but this short term , what I want is more important than any other factor is what has led to the current situation . And yes I do know what it's like to have a child and try without success to get them into my local preferred primary and secondary school .
-
"an ideological argument that is not benefitting anyone. " I love the idea that discussing the wider implications of spending millions of pounds doesn't benefit anyone . But the " anyone " would be the parents in East Dulwich who have children who are coming up to secondary school transfer ,wouldn't it ? It's exactly that very narrow focus that 10 years ago saw no one concerned about Southwark handing over all secondary schools to "sponsors " like Harris . So that we now have the problems that we do today - a fragmented education provision with schools determining their own admissions policies and competing against eachother .
-
But vacancies in other local secondary schools - Academy @Peckham and other good schools - Deptford Green ,Pimlico Academy ,Forest Hill Boys and Sydenham Girls with their coed sixth form within perfectly reasonable travelling distance . And no doubt others . And a school run by Southwark which I note that James is now saying is possible but would take longer .
-
Somehow there are things about this campaign that are beginning to sound wrong to me . This fear of " bussing out of the area " , a Dulwich school for Dulwich kids that they can walk to . Why so intensely local ? Especially against a background of there being vacancies at a school which is ( for example from the hospital site ) one 10 minute bus ride away . This is secondary school ,not primary school . This is London not some isolated rural village . I agree with bornagain about the lack of a strategic plan . It seems as though the current system is weighted ( as always )in favour of those who are articulate and can shout loudest . They'll get the attention and a shiny new school . Surely such an approach will lead to sink schools in deprived areas and thriving schools where admission is down to people buying into the area in affluent areas ?
