Lordship Lane Post Office closure threat/strike action
ianr replied to Twirly's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The government published "Securing the Post Office Network in the Digital Age" in November 2010, and in 2011 began a consultation process. More details here: https://www.gov.uk/government/policies/ensuring-the-future-of-the-universal-postal-service-and-post-office-network-services/supporting-pages/funding-and-modernising-the-post-office-network. The consultatation outcome http://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/mutualisation-of-the-post-office was published in July 2012. The House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills Committee's "3rd Report - Post Office Network Transformation", available at http://www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/business-innovation-and-skills/publications/, was also published in July 2012. It contains: "13. When giving evidence, Paula Vennells, Chief Executive of Post Office Ltd, set out what she believed to be the advantages of the new 'Locals' model. She highlighted the fact that opening times would be extended?in her view, typically from 7am in the morning to 10pm at night, and sometimes later?which she argued would bring in both additional, younger customers and increased revenue to the Post Office.[24] However, this will be balanced by a reduction in the range of services offered. Despite the Government's statement that "we have heard loud and clear how much the public values a large branch network that offers a wide range of products", [25] 'Local' post offices will no longer offer the following services, currently available from the majority of post offices: ? The posting of international parcels and any parcels weighing over 20kg; ? Parcel Force Express Services parcels; ? Manual cash deposits and withdrawals; ? Change-giving service to small businesses; ? Post Office financial services and insurance products; ? Manual bill payments services; ? Passport, car tax and DVLA services; ? On demand foreign currency; and ? Payment by cheque." I don't know how important to people any of these are. >>And is it profitable? >Its clearly not profitable as costs are greater than revenues. My question was about the franchise. -

> The rationale. Currently for every ?1 of comission and revenue towards their operating costs they spend ?1.48. Clearly this isn't sustainable. > My personal experiences are such francises can work well. Until last autumn my day job was near borough tube. The crown > post office was closed and the replacement franchise I found gave me a better more personal service. And is it profitable? What is it about the economics that make a franchise viable when Post Office Counters seem only to be able to run it at a loss? -

I don't understand. Nine months ago you were posting messages recommending a driving school and individual instructors. -
New 4G mobile service effecting freeview in East Dulwich
ianr replied to Callie's topic in The Lounge
rubyglade Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > My freeview has also been very bad recently. It's good to know why this is happening. It's very difficult without investigation to be sure that it is definitely the cause. Best contact https://at800.tv/find-out-more/pilots/pilot-2-4g-test/ immediately, while they have testers in the area (next week they are apparently in West London) , so that they can check the cause, get data as to the locations of problem areas, and give you a filter if the cause is 4G transmission. There's an "at800 free advice line on 0333 31 31 800" mentioned in their latest web page on the West London tests. -

Southwark council street property - please help!
ianr replied to Girl82's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
> but when I looked on the council's list of street properties > No, it's not Balchier Road - why? What you looked at and gave us is a 2011 document apparently cached by Google after a previous search on 'southwark+street+property+"balchier+road"'. It's one of many about Southwark's investment programme that are on the Southwark website itself, at http://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/2773/five_year_housing_investment_programme. There may be other parts of the Soutwark website that are worth looking at for information about properties in your target street. -
The National Rail Journey Planner has More Options in which you can include things like selecting a station NOT to change at, and allowing longer than usual times for changing. Blackfriars or Lewisham look like potential candidates, though you'd have to carefully check the transfer intervals. Hover over the Chg number result to see the times of arrival and departure at the change stations. You can also see station plans, small and enlarged, and photographs, if you go to an individual station's page. The station live arrivals and departures pages also show the platform numbers.

As I couldn't separately verify the reg details, I was discounted as a witness. What had happened to the piece of paper? If it was still in existence, did the insurance company know that it was a record made by you immediately after seeing the incident? -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
ianr replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"In preparation for the 4G mobile phone network roll out, a company called at800 has been setup" "We expect residents will be contacting the Council about TV reception issues, particularly those who are connected to Council communal TV aerials. We have made arrangements at the CSC and advised resident officers on how to handle these calls." At https://at800.tv/find-out-more/about-us/): "at800 is a trademark of Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL). We are funded by and represent the UK mobile operators who will be launching 4G mobile services at 800 MHz, EE, Telef?nica UK (O2), Three and Vodafone." There is more on their website about their tests. I assume they must have been approved by Ofcom, according to whom (at http://stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/spectrum/spectrum-awards/): "The mobile network operators are responsible for ensuring that consumers continue to receive clear Digital Terrestrial Television signals following the roll out of 4G mobile services in the 800 MHz spectrum band. Visit http://www.at800.tv for more information." I see that someone has already made FoI inquiries of Ofcom about 4G interference and tests: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/ofcom_model_for_4g_interference https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/4g_tests_conducted_by_at800com_a -
Bah! I thought this was going to be a thread about eurhythmy or calisthenics.

I've spotted the occasional early house moth in the last week or two.

Not used them much, but I found the Peckham Rye Park one less used than the Dulwich Park one, and neither of them busy. Here's Southwark's list of outdoor gyms http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200435/free_outdoor_activities/2611/outdoor_gyms, and details of individual exercisers http://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/200087/sports_and_leisure, though I don't know how up-to-date they are.

And another small set recently appeared in Brimmington Park, next to the Old Kent Road Aldi.
