That sounds clear. It's a new problem to me, that I don't understand, but you can find others reporting similar partial inabilities to read from optical drives. Some of them report lens cleaning has helped, some not. Internal optical drives are in any case easy to replace, should it turn out to be a hardware problem. I don't understand your point about ripping to mp3 from external optical drives. Where is the stuff saying you need a very expensive one? If I want to make an mp3 copy of an audio CD I use separate free software -- a Digital Audio Extractor, and WinLame for the conversion -- rather than whatever comes with the operating system. I do that from an internal optical drive, but don't know of any reason why an external drive would be treated any differently. And I suspect that any ripping software built into the operating system would similarly not be bothered about whether a drive was internal or external. Someone who owns an external opptical drive can, I hope, clarify that point.

> The CD drive on my laptop has packed up for all except data discs. It won't read CDs or DVDs Better clarify this. Are your data disks not CDs or DVDs? What does Windows Explorer (assuming you're running Windows) tell you of the drive contents if you insert a music CD or video DVD?

You can get the registered details of the vehicle at https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/home/intro/. If you want to know the name and address of the registered keeper you can apply to DVLA giving reasonable cause for your enquiry. http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/data/relinfo/howtorequest.aspx. -

No, just not familiar with some areas of consumption. I've only recently done a small upgrade from a Nokia 1100. I assume from what you say that the iPhone's got a built-in battery -- it must at least surely be replaceable? -- but my advice was general anyway.

For any remaining gunge you really need to have a look at any system components, especially circuit boards, and to try gently swabbing off any deposits with isopropyl alcohol. Even then, largely a matter of luck as to whether any permanent damage hasn't been done. To increase your odds after such accidents, always remove the battery immediately. I'd be inclined to also wash the thing out with purish water at that stage.

Very Old Pic (Apparently it's an East Dulwich house)
ianr replied to jimbo1964's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
> A house in 1959 dont know where. It is, as it says on the outside, in Cardiff. The photograph turns up in Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane's Folk Archive exhibition, entitled Paiinted House, Cardiff, Wales, 2001. A note says the tenant was airing a long-standing grievancve wih the the council. (Warmning: if you go to the British Council site hosting a replica of the whole exhibition - the pic's on the fourth floor - it gratuitously pre-downloads 40MB on you, including some videos.) -

You accused the original poster, ChainshotCannon, of publishing a photo here as "a way to trick us into publicising the scummy edl." If, an hour later, you apparently concede that you don't truly know or believe that , you should have the decency and integrity to explicitly withdraw your allegation and apologise.

We need to be vigilant. > Thanks to quick admin for removing. I didn't see anything in the post or in the poster's (ChainshotCannon) history to lead me to that conclusion. I didn't experience the handwritten note that had been stuck up inside a lift in the block of flats, or the photo of it that was posted here, as inflammatory or propagandic, though I did wonder at the perceived need for posting about it. There are plenty of other instances of flyposting and unpermitted advertising that I'd happily see prosecuted, but this single notice in a lift seemed to me more evidence of the unhappiness of the person who produced it than of anything else, and I doubt that any heavyhanded anti-racist action, via the police or otherwise, is to any point. I see that several of the poster's other posts seem now to have been deleted, and hope that 'vigilance' has not been overdone. Whatever I've missed, I hope that someone will post details of the actual evidence that it was a trick.

I expect many of us have 3.5" drives that we could use to copy the files to a CD or whatever, but if Foxy has a USB drive that he can lend you to use on your own machine, that sounds the best offer.

Spurling road contra flow cycle route
ianr replied to nunhead_man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'll mosey on down there tomorrow to have a look. I hope whatever is being done is handled more efficiently than seemed the case in 2010, when they installed planning notices and road markings for a cycle contraflow in Bellenden Road, only to eventually remove them all. See the second page of the forum thread about it here: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?20,549542,564166#msg-564166 -

Lordship lane Co-op wants to open 23/7
ianr replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The prescribed forms to apply for grant or variation of a licence (latest versions are here) have separate places in the operating schedule for the exact times of all relevant activities intended (singing, dancing, alcohol, late-night-refreshment, etc) and for the full opening hours. So, the applicant would have had to enter them all precisely, and I don't see any reason to doubt the 24 hour opening. That said, the opening hours, other than those used for the licensable activities, are a matter not of Licensing but of Planning. On that question I've only this Q&A to offer by way of information, from http://www.lgs.uk.com/lgsuk/qa.html. Q. As a business do I need Planning Permission to extend my hours of operation? A. Yes if there is a condition on your original permission which restricts operating hours. If you search on the Southwark planning register for the Co-op's postcode, SE22 8HJ, there are various minor applications dating from 1996. Not surprisingly, that's far too recent to have any details of any "original permission", assuming any was ever needed. I suppose it's possible there might have been some once granted, or that there might be a statement of law somewhere as to either deemed original permissions or procedure to be followed if there is none, or that the council has relevant usable powers concerned with public amenity; but I really have no idea. If anyone really is interested in pursuing the 24 hour opening question, I suggest it's initially something to ask the Planning Department about, possibly channelling your requests for information through a councillor. Alternatively, look for information from those who know about planning law. It's above my (zero p/hr) pay grade. -

How to find out if Overground is running this weekend?
ianr replied to camberlou's topic in The Lounge
To possibly add to the confusion, here's my first take: The TfL weekend engineering text report (select the Overgound link) at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/livetravelnews/realtime/track.aspx?offset=weekend says just Sunday closure afaics. Checking Sunday timetables, on both TfL and National Rail sites definitely shows replacement buses needed , from East Dulwich, so presumably no Sunday service on our line either. The icon shown for Overground on the TfL timetables (a brownish LT sign) may be confusing. It doesn't signify a bus. Their icon for that is bus-like. On a good day with lightish traffic, I've got from East Dulwich Grove to Clapham Junction or back in half an hour or less. It's easily stretched to three quarters of an hour, maybe sometimes more, if dense traffic. -
