Lordship lane Co-op wants to open 23/7
ianr replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Goose Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > So from this website (below) for application lodged on 27th Feb, open 24 hours but alcohol 0600-2300 (except Sunday). > > Has my support but what defines 'late night refreshment' "Late night refreshment" is defined, in Schedule 2 of the Licensing Act 2003, as "hot food or hot drink" provided between 23:00 and 05:00. For that a licence is required. The schedule even states that hot drinks containing alcohol do not fall within its specific provisions. They'd presumably fall within a standard alcoholic drinks licence. I've so far found no law specifying that any shop in Southwark requires permission or licence to be open 24 hours on any day other than Sunday. I don't know that the the statement within the licence application that it's intended to open for 24 hours a day imports anything beyond a wish to be clearly accurate and truthful. If anyone knows anything more about 24 hour opening where there's no provision of either alcohol or late night refreshment, please do contribute. -
Slipping Hazard at East Dulwich Station?
ianr replied to chesterpuss81's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
After noticing a rain drip inside a Soutern train carriage on 22 December, I sent a detailed email once I'd got home, to Southern Railways Customer Services . I got an email back on 22 January to say that it had been logged. "If you wish to contact us further regarding your query, please contact our Customer Service team directly at [email protected], by phone on 08451 27 29 20, or in writing to: Southern Customer Services PO Box 3021 Bristol BS2 2BS" If there's a possibility of a hazard, I'd suggest a phone call, email, and tell the station staff as well, to ensure that they are definitely aware and on notice. Keep a record. It's also advisable to get on the record anyway, just in case your own slip has any subsequent consequences. -
If you use a Virgin National or Cable news server (ie probably news.virginmedia.com) for posting to Usenet, are you having any problems doing so at present? Or not? I've not been able to make any postings since Monday. At least one other person on the Virginmedia help forum is having a similar problem, so it's not just me. I've notified both Virgin and Highwinds (who I believe handle the Usenet routing) of the fault. Highwinds have expressed an interest and have asked me for diagnostics. It would be very useful to have information from other users as well, confirmatory or not.

Lordship lane Co-op wants to open 23/7
ianr replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The real question is just night-time opening. The alcohol issue is a red herring: as Sue's pointed out, permission from 6am rather than 7am, and still only to 11pm at latest. The applied-for late night refreshment licence to 05:00 would include, aiui, just hot food and drinks. Could someone please clarify: if it were not for the late-night refreshment licence application, would any permission be needed for the 24/7 opening? -

The details on the online register of licensing applications are at: http://app.southwark.gov.uk/licensing/LicPremisesAppliedDetails.asp?systemkey=840448 And some current ones already granted: Sainsbury's Local 357-365 LL http://app.southwark.gov.uk/licensing/LicPremisesGrantedDetails.asp?systemkey=839635 Sainsburys Dog Kennel Hill http://app.southwark.gov.uk/licensing/LicPremisesGrantedDetails.asp?systemkey=831488 The latter includes a 24 hour licence for off-licence sales. -
I hadn't realised his role in The Wire. That's impressive.

It sounds like a provider's systems problem rather than anything to do with the phone, given that you say you have been able to access the internet on it. If you and Vodaphone records agree that you have made a top-up, been given a freebie code, used it, and were given a month's free internet access as a result, the only thing I can think of is that you might have met a lag between the winning and the usability: their FAQ does mention that you may have to wait up to 24 hours for free texts and minutes to become available. If you're short of any definitive record or information as to what transactions have taken place, you could test, with a LOST text, that you have no freebie code still unused. Or you could simply try using the internet again, and see if there's the same or similar charge (I only saw a ?1 a day one on their website) still applied. If you have all the records and are still being charged, you've all you need for a written complaint. If you can't get all the information, ditto.

You've presumably got to the bottom left hand node of the tree at https://rewardz.vodafone.co.uk/#howitworks and selected an Instant Reward. At that point it seems to be a bloody lottery, with you being offered a choice from a randomly selected four from a pool at least twenty five options, two of which are "2 days free internet" and "Free data for 30 days". What did you manage to choose, did you have to restart the process several times (if it allowed it) until what you wanted turned up in the four choices offered, what feedback did the system give you, and is your phone number definitely linked to the shenanigans on the web page?

Here's a bird's eye view, showing it in its surroundings: http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-203350-folly-tower-in-back-garden-of-number-23-/bingmap. I've not found a photo of it on Geograph. It seems fairly well hidden from public view.

Any feedback that might be helpful for future cases?

Where are they now? Does anyone remember them? -------------- The Gnomes of Dulwich, 1969 Last Updated by Jonn Elledge 9 hours ago The single best thing we discovered while researching this article. The Gnomes of Dulwich was ? quite, quite brilliantly ? about some garden gnomes living in Dulwich. One of them was played by Terry Scott, of Terry and June fame, while the show was written by Jimmy Perry, who also helped create Dad?s Army. Sadly, tapes of The Gnomes of Dulwich were wiped, and no copies are known to exist. Which is a shame, as that concept sounds amazing. You're far from the first to be asking this question. Most discussions go to at least three pages. "Try it on the neighbour's cat" has also been suggested, though most responses are similar to those above, with only about 12% in one poll saying they wouldn't risk it, and someone eating theirs in 2010 after five years. http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?p=31451263 Not many deaths noted. The oldest eaten I've seen was in a message board post of 2007: "I've just scraped the last of the Marmite from the jar. Best before date 03/99. I'll miss the old jar, it had become somewhat of a family heirloom. Tasted just as good as when I opened it all those years ago." http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbarchers/html/NF2693943?thread=4739877

Odd grey van - 'Macmillan cancer' or casing?
ianr replied to buddug's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Macmillan have collections done by Clothes Aid according to http://www.charitybags.org.uk/clothing_collectors_list.shtml, who also have an entry describing Clothes Aid as reputable and trustworthy. That the collection tallied with the leaving of bags suggests that it probably was a genuine one, though there are also rogue collectors and gatherers of loose objects around: http://www.charitybags.org.uk/thefts_of_clothing_collection_bags.shtml Genuine collectors will presumably be willing to give honest answers to questions about who they are. -

But was that really random kindness? Talking of things left out, this afternoon there was a largish animal hutch thing on the pavement on the east side of Woodwarde Road, about 200m from the junction with Eynella but before the junction with Beauval. Presumably left there for the taking. It's on four legs, is about the size of a small primary school desk, and the animal accomodation has two compartments.

I think you're right about line 3: very likely an interloper that wants to lure you into its lair. If it won't let you shut down that window/tab, or the whole browser, you could try doing so via Task Manager. If your browser is configured so as to reload whatever windows you had up on last use, and you can't amend that configuration, try killing each individual tab as soon as it appears. That's worked for me previously. Doing any restart when not connected to the net might make things easier.

> i didnt know i need to have the permanent residence confirmed in writting .i ll have a look at the website u gave to me .thank u !!! As the page says, you don't need to apply for permanent residence, or to get written confirmation of it. You have it by right after five years here as an exerciser of treaty rights. But as you were worried about your future status here, producing the evidence now and getting your status confirmed in writing might be one way of providing reassurance for yourself. After that you could stay here indefinitely even without your Italian, or British, citizenship, and re-enter as a returning resident as stipulated in the immigration rules: "18. A person seeking leave to enter the United Kingdom as a returning resident may be admitted for settlement provided the Immigration Officer is satisfied that the person concerned: (i) had indefinite leave to enter or remain in the United Kingdom when he last left; and (ii) has not been away from the United Kingdom for more than 2 years; and (iii) did not receive assistance from public funds towards the cost of leaving the United Kingdom; and (iv) now seeks admission for the purpose of settlement."

sabrina79, get your permanent residence confirmed in writing (see http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/eucitizens/documents-eea-nationals/) and you can rely on being able to remain here indefinitely so long as you don't do anything, such as getting convicted of serious crime, that might merit deportation. It would be almost unheard-of for any future law to act retrospectively to remove indefinite leave status once affirmed.
