    Rugby matters

Not that (m)any will care on this forum. But wallabies bossing the bok scrum at the end of both halves earlier today to help squeak a win over the world champs was a thing of joy. I guess rassie will be getting his video equipment prepped....
  2. There was quite a lively discussion on this issue on the 'Hartlepool' thread a few months ago....starts on page 3 and goes for a while....

Thanks for the insight Pugwash....I think there are 2 key aspects to this whole thing - 1) funding of more social care and 2) improving the quality/provision of social care...clearly first the govt has to work out how its going to raise the money to fund more people who will be in social care, given the ageing population...its obviously announced how it wants to do that...thats step 1. I would hope (perhaps overly-optimistically) that further work will be done on actually examining the provision of social care, and at least trying to make sure the funds raised in some way also improve the overall quality (and access) of the care being provided as well, but it might be the case that the funds still aren't enough for both unfort..and the funding needs to be revisited again (lets hope not) In anycase, without this second part (some may argue this should be done first, personally im fine with being done 'later', as long as its done) then just raising money to throw into a black hole of a sector which is not fit for purpose (that's not a criticism of the people that work in it before any jumps down my throat) is far from ideal. Further, I do agree with the comment above, that its seems to be being rushed through, which is a concern. if the country has waited X many years for such an initiative, then a few weeks of review and examination surely wouldn't hurt. Finally, as a aside....Labour and Keir Starmer...FFS....whether you agree, disagree, or are agnostic on this announcement, its clearly a big deal and a chance for an opposititon to make a mark, and Labour are once again no where, other than to say they dont like it....how inspiring....

Well...if nothing else I have to give credit to Bojo.....his critics have been saying for years that he is a populist, cant make the hard decisions, and just wants to please everyone....well this announcement seemingly pleases almost no one.... It might not be the perfect mechanism (seriously, what would be?)...but critics who claiming that its purely an income metric are missing the asset means testing component that comes at the other end to determine what benefits are actually paid out.....

Whether you like more tax or hate it...an extra 1pct for a good reason......let's move on.....
  7. The whole thing has been fetishism to the nth degree. Yes it's a big deal. But not to the extent it now dominates our collective psyche. I mean I could post this article and bang on about how you were lied to. But what a waste of time.... https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/six-times-remainers-denied-an-eu-army-would-happen Please don't comment on this. I couldn't care less....just an example of how petty the whole thing has become.....
  8. When even I give the game away....I think mal might be right.... Let's separate the decision, with the subsequent management. They are not one and the same as much as you say they are. I.e. a sensible govt would issue simple working visas to fill short term gaps. While still encouraging a transition to more local labour investment.....not just blanket 'work it out'. That's not brexit's fault, that's the govt fault.
  9. I'm 100percent sure you indeed only remember the times when you were right. That's the point mate. Anyway...I'm now guilty of playing the man, which I don't really like at all. My apols. But if you can't look back over 5 years of threads and find at least a handful of sound arguments which might not support the 'brexit is totally and utterly bad' view...then me making a couple of points now isn't really going to change that is it? Go well.
  10. Exactly why I'm not interested anymore...before you've even heard an alternative argument, you've concluded I don't have a point....as you have with every point that's ever been made on this thread which doesn't paint brexit in the most negative light possible. There's absolutley zero point trying to make a serious argument on this issue with you on this thread. Not becuase there aren't points to be made, but becuase you don't wish to hear them. Hence, I now prefer my occasional taunting smarminess....
  11. What was that about going to any lengths to avoid admitting a mistake or making a concession?.....
  12. What a vivid imagination you have. So creative. I will indeed keep reading...I'm keen to know how my SOUL ends up Keep up the good work.
  13. I'll be honest. Im not really that interested in engaging every little point on this thread anymore. I think I've attempted to do that in the past ad infinitum, so a bit over it. I don't mean this in the harsh way its going to sound..but 90 percent of this thread now is just you occasionally posting links to articles or making points which provide you with your own self-satidfaction. Then followed by supportive comments from other remain acolytes bemoaning how disastrous everything is, and how you were all saying it would be exactly like this for years. You're of course welcome to do that, but I've made my arguments many times before, and can't be bothered being too involved in this seemingly constant tit for tat point-scoring which this thread has become. So I'll just dip in with a smarmy arrogant comment from time to time.... just so know I care:)

Dont be so harsh on yourself j.a. But seriously...funny how all I did was copy verbatim the same term that sephiroth used to describe leavers. But it's only arrogant and smarmy when I say it....??? Sure..im the hypocrite.....

  16. You may not like some things IDS has said, supported or done in the past....but he doesn't miss with this article.... Biden's colossal mess is even worse than we thought The loss of crucial intelligence and billions of dollars' worth of military equipment will come back to haunt the West IAIN DUNCAN SMITH 27 August 2021 ? 4:56pm Iain Duncan Smith The news that 79 Afghans, 13 US service personnel and three Brits were killed, along with many more injured, in suicide bomb attacks yesterday was shocking. It was all the more so because Nato intelligence had predicted such an event, yet had proved unable to do anything about it. This tragic mess comes back to President Biden. He owns every decision ? and the consequences are also his. Two weeks ago, as the Taliban walked into Kabul, it took days to get the President explain how he had got his plans for Afghanistan so badly wrong. In a misplaced display of stubbornness, coupled with faulty memory, he first claimed the chaos was inevitable and part of their plan. Then, he claimed US intelligence advised him Afghan forces would hold out for 60 days. In reality, of course, there was nothing inevitable about the violence and chaos of the withdrawal. Meanwhile, officials have been letting it be known that Biden was indeed warned that the Afghan security services were likely to crumble in the face of the Taliban. He was even warned that if he shut Bagram airbase, he would cut off Afghan forces from their vital air support (a significant factor in their collapse) and lose the best place to evacuate from. He seems to have ignored that advice as well. ADVERTISING That?s why, nearly eight hours after yesterday's attack, when Biden ghosted into the White House East Room he looked shell shocked. After all, in the last eighteen months, there have been no US or allied casualties in Afghanistan, no terrorist attacks from Afghanistan, and the Taliban were being held at bay by the Afghan forces, supported by Nato. In a matter of a few weeks, all of that has been thrown away, leaving the whole of Nato having to rely on the factional Taliban for their security. It also appears that sensitive intelligence, including the names of at-risk Afghans, "could very well have" (to use President Biden's words) been passed to the Taliban. It has also been suggested that the Taliban now have access to biometric devices that include the data of Afghans who supported Nato forces. This alone looks like a death warrant for those now left behind as the Nato flights out come to an abrupt end, leaving many stranded. The Taliban's head of security is none other than Khalil Ur-Rehman Haqqani a designated terrorist and head of the brutal Haqqani faction, responsible for a number of suicide attacks. On his watch, the Taliban has released thousands of prisoners, among them hardcore Isil commanders, trainers and bomb-makers. Advertisement Yet the audit of this Biden-made chaos is far from over. For he isn?t just abandoning Afghans who served Nato forces, it has now emerged that he left behind $85 billion of US-supplied military equipment. That includes 75,000 military vehicles, more than 200 aeroplanes and helicopters and 600,000 small arms and light weapons. The Taliban are also now in possession of the most up-to-date body armour and night vision goggles as well. I shudder to imagine how many of these weapons will make their way to terrorists around the world, to be used in civil wars, against innocent civilians and possibly against British people overseas or, chillingly, at home. The saddest part of this isn?t just the humiliation of the world?s largest superpower and its allies but that this humiliation is happening at a time when China and its ally Russia are on the rise. China has made it clear that it sees this as an ideological contest between the West's concept of democracy and human rights and theirs of autocracy and control. It is a battle that they are winning. Advertisement As Biden stood at the podium making his ridiculous pledge to hit back at those responsible for the suicide bombing, all I could see was the disaster of a man no longer in control ? and it is a disaster for us all. No matter your view of the US, they still remain our best hope for freedom and human rights in a dangerous world.

You'd struggle to find a reputable economist anywhere that disagrees with that premise...even an anti-brexit one. If you dont think the disruption short term is a price worth paying then thats a valid perspective (and largely the focus of anti-brexit economists). But simply rubbishing the entire argument doesnt seem very considered.

I dont mean it as a 'gotcha'....just a wry observation. And I'm not fan of Trump. But if Biden can reverse Trump's non-commitment to Paris climate change agreement....surely he has the power to reverse this....

It 'funny' (in a totally non-funny way) isn't it? Add up all of Trump's misogynistic comments and actions and you'wont even come close to the horror brought to women's and girls lives by the 'progressive' Biden.... Where are the 'pussy hat' marchers now?
