Cal Pep in Barcelona. Though it's been descended on by the great unwashed in recent years. And L'Esguard, in Saint Andreu de Llavaneres nr Barcelona. Miguel Sanchez Romera used to do a pretty mean nine-course menu, though he may have cut that down recently(?). The wine cellar is fun (bottles nestling in all kinds of nooks in the sandstone beneath the restaurant).

Yes, it is. They make a tremdous double act. As you'll realise by now, I'm a huge Ninja Tune fan. :)

It's an actual apple tree on LL, so in ED. Free food. 'Fraid you'll need a ladder to get to the rest though! And on topic, St John.

Not sure about the audio mix here (there are better), but the visuals quite fun.

The apple tree on LL. Just foraged some apples. Bloomin' marvellous. (But unfortunately another scrumper who got there before me broke a 5-feet long branch. Fail.)

BBW, have you entertained the idea of target practice on the local fox population ;-)

That's sad, Karen. My thoughts are with you. There's no really ceremony for people to celebrate a dog's life. Though I recall in Barcelona they have a 'pet ceremony' in the churches every year, where everyone brings their pets along. A kind of mass pet blessing. Or pet blessing mass. Which is nice. The rescue cats sounds like a great idea.

You're lucky it wasn't delivered intravenously.

Current economic trends - call for evidence
louisiana replied to louisiana's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The US seems to be following the advice of this Status Quo classic. Banks that went to the wall in 2008: 25? Banks that have gone to the wall so far in 2009 (and we're only in August): 81 Meredith Whitney's prediction: 300 by the time it's over (Meredith was the astute analyst who called the Citibank debacle. She has a good track record.) -

The foxes are getting as bold as brass. Last month I reported one here that was almost challenging me on Court Lane. Last week I saw a particularly fine example preening itself in the middle of my neighbour's back lawn in brilliant sunshine at 11 a.m. Like he owned the place. They just don't care, do they?

SE22 reaches as far as the N side of Court Lane, in places. But the park is Dulwich. London Recumbents is great. A friend of mine comes from Oxfordshire to get his vehicles.

NHS staff - 50% higher rate of sickies
louisiana replied to MrBen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
When I worked for the NHS (80's), it seemed to be standard to 'charge' 12 days of 'sickness'. I'm sure times have changed. I would also point out that public services are far, far better than private sector on complying with disability legislation, and employing people with disabilities. I *hardly ever* come across people with disabilities in private sector, whereas I come across them and work with them all the time in public sector organisations. (My work involves working with hundreds of people in each of a couple of hundred major organisations, public and private.) This may well affect the data. The most hours I have ever worked were: - BT, 36-hour shifts back in the late 80's/early 90's (with sleeping bag in boot of car so I could sleep under desk in distant computer centre, which was never taken out 'cos there was no time to sleep at all during that time) and - self-employed, similarly doing 24-36-hour shifts -
Daizie, men are not what they were. Mutter the words 'direct action', and they will run for their mothers. B) I blame the water. And their mothers, of course.

She also said she'd like > to see someone who sat them years ago , sit them > today, and then see what they think ! I couldn't agree less. I have taught third year undergrads recently, and I've been amazed at how truly awful some/many of them have been. Okay, this was a third-rate uni (but they pay the bills!). If in a class of 20 you have just one student who is reasonably competent/able, there is a problem on admissions (A levels etc.). I'm not talking about brilliance, I'm talking about (a) being able to turn up for class and (b) being able to contribute something to class and © being able to submit some work sometime after the class and (d) being able to turn up and participate in assessment sessions. I even had kids who got others to appeal against fail marks *who had not turned up to the major assessment session and who did not submit any work for it* (or for anything else, come to that). The sense of entitlement (something for nothing) is bizarre. My experience as a postgrad student at a first-rate university seven-eight years ago was that a few students were good, and others had difficulty stringing sentences together or even reading stuff or participating in seminars. I came out with a top-rated degree classification that frankly I felt I did not altogether deserve, though I had done miles better than some others in the department. Some should have failed, but none did. Similarly, I've had top-rated exam classifications from other institutions in recent years... But, and for the sake of comparison, I did a similar amount of work thirty years ago at another top uni, and got a 2:2. Which was exactly what I deserved. That kind of says it all.

Some comments, that may not answer your question to your satisfaction. Many commentators expect rates to go up. A few say they will not, yet. If they do, all the people that thought they were almost up s**t creek, will be. To keep a weather eye on what is developing, why not read The Automatic Earth blog? I'd say - if you have debt, get rid of it as soon as you can. - if you don't have debt, don't get any. In times of uncertainty, debt is a high-risk situation.
