I think the figure is somewhat higher among 'christians'. Disturbing premise of programme, but there are worse things in the world. Hope to be able to see it on catch-up and make up my own mind.

And there was me thinking COD 6 was some new and bizarre 'intelligence' unit of the police, extending CCTV camera monitoring into UK territorial waters (COD = Cameras On Divers), now that they seem to have all our land areas covered.

I didn't realise until recently that Gipsy Hill has quite a good rockin vicar. Check out Down In The Effra on their MySpace page.

Crystal Palace cinema campaign - send objections to church use now
louisiana replied to louisiana's topic in The Lounge
It looks like the Bromley Council planning meeting that will be discussing the future of the cinema building will *not* now be 26 November, as originally thought. 17 December is now a likely date, but not firm yet. The delay is down to the applicant - the church - providing a duff transport assessment (I think one of the Croydon councillors described some of the figures as 'fantasy', and Bromley hasn't been too impressed with it either it seems), so they have been told to go away and submit more stuff. There was a big campaign meeting held on 18 October to which around 900 people turned up. Some video on the Facebook group pages. I particularly enjoyed our local rockin vicar, who read out a joint statement from four of the Crystal Palace church leaders. [head not screwed on today - I just managed to delete the previous post unintentionally] -

Clients from hell. FFS, if a document that you asked me to translate was 12 pages, and then later becomes 22 pages, there was no way it was 'definitive' when you gave it to me, and there's no way the changes are "very minor", as you describe. And what's wrong with picking up the phone to tell me that it's all change, huh, and that I should throw away the first one? Come to think of it, nothing irrational about my present rage. I'm ready to kill.

As Sean says.... Really, what is the harm in talking to the ppl? They are human beans, non? There are many properties that are empty for quite literally years (12+) and individuals are not to know what the situation is of any particular property. Just speak to them. It's easy enough to get a court order in the 'county court', just takes a few weeks, quite hassle free really.

I've been on Virtual Norwood, where some predicted the death of EDF owing to the break. How foolish. B) Welcome back.

The christians in the film do call her a witch at one point. Like science = witchcraft, and maths = heresy, huh? From Wikipedia: Hypatia of Alexandria (pronounced /haɪˈpeɪʃə/ in English) (Greek: Ὑπατία; born between 350 and 370 ? 415) was a Greek[1][2] scholar from Alexandria in Egypt,[3][4] considered the first notable woman in mathematics, who also taught philosophy and astronomy.[5] She lived in Roman Egypt, and was killed by a Christian mob who falsely blamed her for religious turmoil.[6] Some suggest that her murder marked the end of what is traditionally known as Classical antiquity,[7][8] although others such as Christian Wildberg observe that Hellenistic philosophy continued to flourish until the age of Justinian in the sixth century.[9] A Neoplatonist philosopher, she belonged to the mathematical tradition of the Academy of Athens represented by Eudoxus of Cnidus;[10] she followed the school of the 3rd century thinker Plotinus, discouraging empirical enquiry and encouraging logical and mathematical studies.[11] -

I saw Alejandro Amenabar's new film Agora on Friday (opens here in UK December). Alexandria, 4 AD. Rachel Weisz IS The Astronomer (Hypatia of Alexandria), representing reason against the backward and warring religious tribes. She just "believes in philosophy". Christians don't come out well. Epic. Worth checking out. Slow start but picks up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agora_%28film%29 -

Then it does not count as a 'broadcast' at your place of work and no licence required.

Yep, correctly ID'd. Lovely shot. Could you post it to the ED Nature watch thread? - helps keep all our beasties together.

Another view on South London Line
louisiana replied to Maurice's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ninety percent of my journeys are to London Bridge or Charing Cross (from where walk), with quite a few others to Waterloo or Paddington or Kings Cross (to catch an overground). I rarely need to go to west London. I rarely need to go to Canary Wharf area, though I ocasionally go to City Airport. Many of my clients are around Bank, so walking from London Bridge/Canon Street makes most sense. They are going to be pushing a lot more people onto the Tube system. -

To get vaguely back on topic (but why should I? It's the Lounge after all) Speech Debelle and Florence of Florence and the Machine have come out in support of the cinema campaign. Speech comes from Gipsy Hill, and Florence is a sarf London girl, innit. Some coverage in the Streatham Guardian or somesuch. -

Bizzy, it does come across sometimes like you're hurling words around ('entice', 'crazy', 'bigoted', 'dirt digging' etc.) but without ever responding any of the actual factual or more philosophical points or questions that people raise here. > Sometimes it's obvious they don't like what I > post. Good point Bizzy. > > I'm not in favour of the KICC Church, but then > again I'm not in favour of the cinema either. I > don't agree with Church's that promise untold > riches and happy family life. There I would agree with you, which is maybe not a surprise to you. I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of people who don't have a lot being asked to give what is quite a lot for them, based on such a promise. That strikes me as unethical. I tend to be in favour of the person 'without'. I would like to see wealth generated in the minority ethnic communities in the UK (that is after all KICC's stated membership) and in *all* communities in the UK, being based on people doing stuff that is good and wanted and valued. Not on the basis of poor people giving to rich people; which I regard as immoral. There will only be *real* transfer of wealth (and there's quite a transfer of wealth 'story' going on in the PG community) when this happens: when those who have real money and power transfer to those with less, because we decide to value and measure things in such ways. And this is not about religion at all: this is about New Economics (see NEF), about social equity etc. etc. But then I don't regard wealth as a measure of value, so what do I know? ;-) > that one should be free to worship and practice > their religion. In many parts of the world, the > price for this can be cruel. > > Whilst I don't post on other topics, it's not to > say I don't have a view on them, it's simply > because I have nothing useful to add. I > will get back to you on that. I posted the link to her letter here before, when I originally raised the issue, but I'll do it again: http://www.tessajowell.net/crystal-palace-planning The link is also on her home page. Bear in mind that TJ has supported KICC specifically in the past, support to which I've previously posted links. So, as I said before, I don't think she can be accused of being part of some perceived conspiracy. She has stated her reasons in the letter. You'd be quite right to question the motives of *any* politician in the run-up to an election (2010), but that's kind of the price of living in the system we do. -
Gotta say, out of all the real ales, the products Hobgoblin are my least favourite. We tend to walk out of pubs and find somewhere else if all that is on offer is Hobgoblin ales. Sorry.

East Dulwich proposed speed bumps - any views?

Seems like > cheap policing to me. But importantly the > residents of Matham Grove would choose whether > they want this or not. This seems disingenuous. In our road we protested the humps as completely inappropriate (and Southwark agreed it's a pretty strange road and they wanted to follow this up), but we were told that the council had approached the Met to discuss, and the Met Police had told the council that without speed humps in *every single street in the 20 mph zone at specific intervals of distance, the entire 20 mph zone was legally unenforceable* and so we would have to have them whether we liked it or not. In the end, after quite a few residents did a street walk with Southwark to show/tell them what we thought, the number of humps was reduced so that we were not forced to have humps on really steep narrow chicanes. So just the number reduced after extensive protest; not choice. The fastest a vehicle can drive down here is 15-20 mph, so speed humps here a complete waste of money. (The hump nearest my house as part of this scheme is round-top, not sinusoidal) -
Political leaflets - just a waste of paper?

Well until yesterday, there was somewhere else to go for this info: The Straight Choice which used Ernest Marples to provide the service, as a public service. Along with other useful free services, such as Planning Alerts. But then the Royal Mail's lawyers threw the book at them: http://ernestmarples.com/blog/ So Royal Mail's redundant employees will not be able to use Jobcentre Pro Plus to find new jobs in their locality. http://jobcentreproplus.com/ Royal Mail: the organisation that just keeps on giving. > Also readership of local Papers like the Southwark > News is low in ED and SE22 doesn't seem to get to > my road - but these publications are unlikely to > allow opposing political debate in the raw. > Leaflet deliverers can't sort out the above three > categories on the doorstep. > So how can people get information?
