  1. Muley, it is the hill that has no name, not the roads on it. Underhill, Overhill... but which hill? The hill was Adon Mount. Now Adon Mount seems to be confined to old OS maps.

Quite. Fois gras is probably organic...
  3. Muley Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Upper East Side? Wassat then, the Upper East East > Dulwich Side? Is that, like, Barry Road and stuff? Ah, a little beyond Barry Rd, upon the hill that used to be known as Adon Mount but which now appears to have no name. Barry Rd is a little, ahem, low rent.
  4. We had an old codger round today. The one we had before we were once again rudely interrupted by some youth aiming to scale rockeries, plough up lawns etc. In Spain, the banks always had their own door-to-door delivery folk in the major towns/cities, owing to crap public service post. It may be that here in the UK it'll be internet notification or nothing before long.
  5. The rain is falling so hard now on the Upper East Side that the car alarms are going off. Argh, lightening! Some July we've had.
  6. Windom, as someone who is being offered 0.0004% interest on a thousands-of-pounds company savings account by HSBC, the difference between what is being charged and what is being paid has not passed me by! I had - as I always do when I call the bank, and they ask if I want to transfer money to Money Manager - suggested that they were probably only offering 0.001% so it wasn't worth my while, and I wasn't far wrong! And yes, they are also offering to lend me money at crazy (high) rates.

We have a lawyer 'list' packed full of expertise on free speech, Internet, copyright, 'ISP'/service provider legal responsibilities, and all that jazz. (Though I hope, of course, it never comes to that.)
  8. Links to the two parts of the report (which was basically a literature review) can be found at the foot of this page.
  9. Nationwide seems quite upbeat at the moment regarding 2009. (Is this a dead cat bounce?) The markets seem less so. And the jobs market continues to look grim, though unemployment tends to lag. I'd be interested in any other 'evidence' people can point to, from UK, US or elsewhere, about where we might be on the roller-coaster that is the economy.
  10. Yes Quids, that was a fascinating account of young drug dealers. We heard again the claim this morning on the radio (BBC R4) that it's 'under control', but perhaps my idea of control and theirs differ substantially. I feel if they had to provide a complete account, including all the adverse social and economic consequences their policies, it would be clearly be seen how seriously their policies have failed to date.
  11. I've had an onslaught of Jersey Tiger moths trying to get into the kitchen. Very difficult to get them out again without damage (with a colander and some persistence!) When they're not flying in through the window, they're resting on the glass outside. These day-flying moths are apparently found in Channel Islands, Isle of Wight, Devon, Dorset...and South London! A very attractive creature: http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=2067 http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?id=824
  12. Dodo1 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > For some reason we seem to be getting alot of Stag > Beetles (well three). Any reason why? They're really common around these parts. SE London is known as a stag beetle area. In a hot summer I have them running around on the pavement outside my house in dozens.
  13. I understand a bomb also fell around where the telephone exchange is (and perhaps there used to be a fire station there which presumably got bombed - hence the name Fireman's Alley).
  14. Another issue: there has been a significant decline in nutrients between 1950 and 1999, according to FDA-funded study (USA). (I don't think organic formed part of that study.)
  15. Non-organic does not have a future. In coming decades we are going to experience shortening supplies of both oil (industrial extensive farming is 'no people, all machinery') and gas (fertilisers). What then?
  16. We've had yet another new postman in recent weeks. First time I saw him (from the window) he had yomped across my lawn and was trying to clomp his way through the sloping rockery. The next time, he threw three letters down on the steps outside the front door (rather than putting them through the letter box right in front of him. Where do they find these people?
  17. ianr Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Thanks Ladygooner, but I don't want to go the > Customer Services route and fit into their > 'complaint' template and get an apology, and be > assured etc ..., and possibly not much else done. Oh, they'll probably send you 6 2nd class stamps, to calm you down. That's my experience anyway.
  18. I've considered kidnapping the cats the come to shit on my lawn. How on earth could their owners object?
  19. My mum's (parents) house was washed away by a river when she was a teenager. Similary, lost everything, with many photos etc for previous generation. I have all my stuff on about three different external drives, have kept all my CD's, do not buy MP3's etc., and stay well clear of any DRM music (DRM = buy today, gone tomorrow). Considering a fire safe.
  20. So now number plate cloning is a fairly common thing. Ye gods. Unintended consequences and all that. Am I the only one feeling that modern life has become far too complex?
  21. I remember from student days buying a turkey in the Pimlico Tesco on Christmas Eve. By Christmas Day morning, it was largely a vile shade of blue and the smell was rank. Probably a combination of Tesco's useless fridges and our own. But no turkey. Can't remember what we had in the end.
  22. PR, I too have protested in the past, via the PCT, a previous petition, etc. But nothing has changed. And today I had to call the doc again. So I also registered my protest - again - with the FH practice manager, and signed the current No 10 petition. FH practice blames BT/Ofcom/the mobile operators. But the choice of 08-number was theirs alone. They also mention that other govt agencies use 08-numbers, as an excuse. But two wrongs don't make a right.
  23. I don't watch the Beany, but the GG roundabout/the EDT were on News at Six on BBC, Monday. Some local random being interviewed about Tube fares, with EDT backdrop. Bizarre, given that we don't have any of that Tube thing down here.
  24. There's now a petition against 084_ numbers e.g. 0844, on NHS services (such as that used by Forest Hill Road Surgery), on the 'Say No to 0870' website/ No. 10 petition website: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Healthtelephone/ Please sign if you object to paying premium rates to get through to your doctor. Signed, angry Forest Hill Road surgery user.
  25. Not an option if you have to buy a HIP, I'm afraid. HIP's are compulsory by law now for house sales: no agent will sell your property without one (or even advertise it).
