More rush hour trains from ED to LB
boswell replied to matthew123's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So have the 8.35 and the 8.41 disappeared then? This is a pain in the arse for me in that case as the .41 used to get me in just in time for work. Those 8 extra minutes of sleep are vital! -
Not sure whether to reply to this thread or not because I think the Bellenden area is lovely and would like to live in one of those roads myself, but kind of feel obliged to point out that when I was doing a project a while ago looking at crime statistcs and assault related ambulance call outs etc they were far worse around the Rye Lane/general Peckham area than in East Dulwich.

Getting to Reading (from East Dulwich)
boswell replied to Fuschia's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It takes me 50 minutes to get to Paddington station in morning rush hour time (Train to LB, Jubilee to Baker St, Bakerloo to Paddington.). Whether you get a seat or not will vary though - I relatively often get a seat, I almost always get one at green park for the last two stops! Sometimes though it's just busier than others and then you'll have to stand for around 20 minutes on the tube. Make sure if you get the tube not to change to the bakerloo at waterloo as it takes forever to walk through the station between the lines. -
Thanks James - very helpful.

mugging on Melbourne Grove (3rd November)
boswell replied to sylvie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It seems as though it's this section of the road that's less safe - the woman stabbed a while ago was at the junction of East Dulwich Grove and I remember reading a while ago about an attempted mugging in Bassono St? -
Is the N-word necessarily racist?
boswell replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I essentially agree with SeanMacGabhann here. Language has always been used as a way of producing and maintaining meaning by certain groups (in their favour) and often as a legitimating tool to justify the poor and unequal treatment and status of minority groups. Therefore, because this word was used in the past by the white community as a derogatory term, and potentially it could be argued as a means of maintaining unequal power relations, it is an unacceptable and racist term for them to use now. However, taking over a previously derogatory term used against yourself can be a means of empowerment. For example, I think I'm right in saying that in the disability movement some people reject the term 'the disabled' as a derogatory category whilst others are now embracing it themselves in order to reject the negative representation of it by others and turn it into a positive identity. Therefore a black person using the word in a non-derogatory way isn't racist, however I might argue that them using it in a derogatory way is because it then re-inforces previous issues of power and discrimination etc. Edited to say: Think this sounds a bit wanky on re-reading but it's been a long day at work and I'm very tired and can't be arsed to change it. -
Really pleased to hear this. It may be an institution but a lot of people I know who have lived in East Dulwich for years don't even know it's there until I tell them because it fades into the background so.

Black and White Cat on St Aidan's Road
boswell replied to fiskaroo's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Cate - I laughed my socks off when I read this over the top article the other week but thought it actually might be useful for you in your crusade: http://www.littlebigcat.com/index.php?action=library&act=show&item=indoorsoroutdoors Possibly replace 'coyote' with 'fox' and it's perfect for you to promote round East Dulwich. -

Foxes in East Dulwich - Are they safe?
boswell replied to Weegee's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We had several foxes over the years who used to come at all hours of day (often used to sun themselves in our garden or on our balcony in the afternoon) and never had any trouble with any of our cats. -
Private vs State education (Primary level).
boswell replied to fruitcake's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Not sure that my opinion is worth much as I'm not a parent myself but had to chip in because I recognise myself in the situation your daughter?s in! I went to a state primary school which didn?t push me at all (although they did try with extra activities and that sort of thing ) but was very happy there. I then went to a private secondary school which pushed me a bit more but to be honest I recognise what you?re saying about resting on your laurels ? I got used to it at primary school and pretty much continued to do it all through secondary school and even university, never pushing myself to do the best I could because I didn?t need to. And although it hasn?t negatively affected me academically it is a big regret that I never pushed myself just to personally feel that I?d really tried as hard as I could at something. So if it?s an attitude problem you don?t want to see develop then possibly private school?s the way to go, although to be honest although I can see the benefits of private school at secondary level I'm not sure they apply in the same way at primary and I also don't know that they outwiegh the negatives you mention above. As far as academics and university are concerned, my personal opinion tends to be that unless your child is in a disruptive class that prevents them learning, if they?re very able they get along fine wherever they are, however I did enjoy the extra benefits that going to a private secondary school gave me. Just my tuppence worth. -
Pleased to announce all landed safely in the playing fields at Alleyns!

New pasta / pizza joint in Melbourne Grove
boswell replied to David Mc's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just walked past and they're inviting people in to sample the food - had some yummy foccacia bread pizza. Their opening night is tomorrow. They all seemed lovely in there and their prices are pretty fantastic for east dulwich - ?4-6 for a plate of pasta or a pizza. I can see myself popping in there regularly when I fancy a quick bite to eat out, just hope it can survive off the beaten track unlike Springers. -
Just saw a policeman walking down Melbourne Grove on my way home from work and stopped and asked him about last night - he was carrying a clipboard with the details written down on it, so guess he was walking around to 'reassure' the local community. He told me it happened at 11.40 last night near the junction with east dulwich road - a man came up behind her and grabbed her bag, there was a struggle and he had a knife. I mentioned the other muggings that have been talked about on the forum and he said they have had a spate of 'street robberies' up the other side of lordship lane recently. He didn't say whether they were connected, but that this was one guy rather than a gang. I always feel safer getting a train back late at night because you walk down the street with a load of other people (as opposed to being one of the only people getting off the bus) but the timings suggest this was around the time that the 11.18pm would have got in. P.S. sorry for the redundant post above - was logged in on my boyfriend's account by mistake. Leah I hope your friend doesn't mind me posting more details, just that I know I wanted to know more about when and how it happened (ridiculous in a way because it doesn't really help you 'stay safer') and thought other people might as well.

I agree with Vallajo on some points, although I also see a similarity in alleynsstudent's post to that of other people on the forum when someone comes and complaines about bad service in a restaurant and gets a response of 'don't bitch about it on here, tell the management'. However, I don't agree with ????. I always think it's such a cheap shot to attack someone's punctuation and grammar rather than their argument. Unless they're talking in complete 'text speak' so no one can understand their point I'm not sure it has much relevance. Unless this was an argument about whether Alleyns turns out exceptionally well educated people, which it isn't.

I'm not entirely sure where the 'highly trumpeted' part comes from, unless Alleyns is taking out self-aggrandising ads in the local press I'm not aware of. Myself at least, I was not attempting to suggest whether what they do is enough or not, I was merely providing an answer to the question in the first post 'what does Alleyn's do for the local community?'. I shall attempt to do so in a more enlivening and original manner in future. I can't say that I have a particular opinion on what schools like Alleyns should do (or whether they deserve to have charitable status at all), but I would generally be interested to know what you think it is they should do and what you mean by having a large 'footprint'?

Just to chip into this debate, the school also offers (at least it did when I was there) remedial maths classes to local children at the weekends. As far as I remember we had to do some form of 'community service' (whether cadets, gardening, charity shop working, visiting a retirement home etc) once a week at least for year nine, and I'm pretty sure we had to continue on in year 10 and 11 as well. There was a lot of charity fundraising going on (own clothes days, talent contests, cake sales, all sorts of things which raised a lot of money). I have to say I did notice the make up of the years change slightly in the years below me as I was one (possibly the last?) year of assisted places, however I'd say that in my year at large proportion of the pupils I knew were from the local area on assisted places or bursaries, in my group of friends out of 14 of us 6 were there on assisted places or bursaries/scholarships. As to serving the local community, in terms of where the pupils lived, I'd say it was only a minority that lived outside the East/North/West Dulwich, Peckham and Forest Hill borders.

Hit-and-run on my parked car, Colwell Rd.
boswell replied to simonscott's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi TJS I'm pretty sure it wasn't your car that was hit but thought I should post just in case. On Sunday I was walking down east dulwich road just by the church and saw a small white van back into a grey/silver car when it was pulling out of it's parking space. I'm pretty sure though that the front and number plate was just badly scratched up and it hadn't caused it to hang off (although spose this might have happened later) and that it was a normal car not a sports car. Anyway, I left a note with the number plate of the van and my email address on the windscreen. -
No worries I had the same problem but luckly I live next to the station so just wandered over. Not sure if the situation will change later but I'm off to the park so no more updates from me for a while!

Just been to the station and all trains are cancelled at the moment. Hope everyone enjoys the day!

And I really don't want to get into an argument but I don't know that anyone other than you *Bob* has mentioned locking this guy up. As far as I'm aware, all that's happened is that the police have been aware that a man has run after (and I think this is quite a big point here - surely any sensible guy would know that running towards a woman by herself after dark who was evidently trying to get away from you is an out of order thing to do?) a woman, making her feel threatened. I can't really see what's wrong of making them aware of a situation where someone has felt threatened and intimidated?
