I know - it's going to the dogs - it used to be that the general population could spell and use proper grammar!

They can always just talk it out, anyway.

Good to see the Omni-shambles which is the PM, has chosen to try to save her own neck in favour of getting a clear message from Parliament. Had she been battered in the vote (which was inevitable) then she (or the next PM) could have taken the result to the EU to show that no matter what she thinks about her insane 'compromise' deal, it will never get past Parliament. Instead, having brazenly ignored the obvious for several days, she has decided to pull the vote to save herself. Par for the course though, I suppose.

It was an application to the SC for permission to appeal and permission was refused, seemingly on technical jurisdictional grounds (i.e on the permissible scope of appeals to the SC). The ECJ hearing is next Tuesday, I think.

  12. Sorry - just seen your later posting that said you are doing it yourself. Polished concrete would best be done by a specialist. Well worth it though, if you were to change your mind.

It's not the complex legalese that's the issue - that is not all that difficult if it's something you are familiar with reading - it's the inability to be able to find anything you may be looking for that's the irritating (and apparently deliberate) tactic that seems to have been adopted that I'm complaining about. Of course it's in legalese - it's a legal document. I was going to write to say I am surprised Jezza hasn't even bothered to read the document yet, but on reflection decided I'm not in the slightest bit surprised! I also see he's reverted to saying he's not for a referendum now (but maybe 'later'). Funny that those in his party who 'clarified' his comments a couple of weeks ago on this (i.e. that when he said he was opposed to another referendum, he in fact meant the opposite) have not said anything today to correct him. Does anyone know today's combined Jezza/Labout party position (or is there no combined single position)?

So have these experts and supposedly intelligent people never heard of one of the most basic word processing functions that exist? Do they (nor any of their hundreds of secretarial support staff) know that their WP system will automatically change para numbers and references in their contents page as any changes are made in the body of the document? Ridiculous - of course they do - yet they have instead chosen to make the document as difficult to access as possible. So difficult that the leader of the opposition hasn't been able to read it yet!

I'm perplexed that a draft agreement of 585 pages has no index or contents page to facilitate navigation of the document - it's almost as if a deliberate decision has been taken to erect barriers in order to discourage people from reading what might be one of the most significant documents in recent years. Maybe I'm being overly cynical, but the only other explanation is that the omnishambles that is the negotiation process has just been carried forward into an amateurish production of the document. There's no excuse for that - it looks rushed and unprofessional. The document jumps from subject to subject with parts of it having no readily identifiable structure. Almost all commentaries I have seen make points about what is in the document without setting out the relevant page number, so they are of limited help in that regard. In at least one case I wanted to check the wording because an MP was on television making an obviously bogus point about certain wording, but it takes forever searching for the needle in the haystack just to check one point. Has anyone located any sort of contents or index (I was hoping some commentator might have produced one after the event)?

No. Frankly if anybody were to be as neurotic as that, they should see a doctor and get some medication for their condition.

Not taking the piss robbin, how does being in > the top 3% pay bracket not make one of the > "highest earners" in the country? Confused. I probably don't have a good answer for that Rendel! I suppose was viewing it from the perspective of a London income. If someone earns ?80k or ?125k in London in wealth terms it's not really comparable with someone making ?80k or ?125k in say Sunderland. Money doesn't go far down here and so simply applying a percentage measure on a nationwide basis isn't very informative or accurate. For example, if you live in Sunderland your mortgage for a similar house in London would be something like a quarter or less. If you live in London and pay 4 or 5 times as much each month as someone in Sunderland (on your biggest single outgoing), then in my eyes that renders average nationwide figures pretty meaningless.
  21. Muppets. As if earning 80k or even 125k in London would make someone one of the 'highest earners' in the country.
  22. Just as pampas grass is a 'code' for something else - if there's a pumpkin outside it means you are welcome to knock for goodies. If there's pampas grass as well as a pumpkin, you might want to carry on to the next pumpkin house (and if not, you can expect chocolates and sweets afterwards)!
  23. I'm sure that's true of Di2. I came within a whisker of electronic shifting on my last road bike, eventually deciding it would have to be on the next one (there's always a 'next one'!). I became a convert to road discs after a few perilous descents in the rain on my commute (and on longer runs) and now I'd never go back. For me they also feel safer and more stable and take less effort in the dry (the modulation is just better, I think). The fear of the turbo is what keeps me going out in the rain. The only glitch was I found my precious new bike wasn't allowed on the Etape because the UCI had temporarily banned them - not a good start! Anyway, sorry - off topic. Back on topic - personally apart from the summer months I'd stick with the Night Vision (red doesn't get shabby as quickly as yellow) but adjusting base layers to suit the temperature. Otherwise, if you keep a look out for the Aldi bike specials, their dirt cheap jackets/soft shells are actually quite presentable and great value.
  24. The problem with chocolate buttons is they tend to all get eaten before anybody shows up at the front door.
  25. a 5 year old Di2? I had you down as a traditionalist Rendel! Turns out you are an early adopter. I bet you have discs as well?
