Oh that's the "if I concentrate, or pretend to, on something so much that I don't see my dog do it's business and no one calls me out on it, I'll get away with having to pick up a dog turd and walking round with it" technique. Because as we all know it is pretty revolting having to carry a bag of dog turd around until you reach an even more revolting doggy do bin. Anyone who gets a dog should have to first pass a test of picking up a dog turd and walking with it until they reach a smelly doggy do bin, for however long that takes, and if they can't do this repeatedly and therefore fail the test then they shouldn't be allowed to have a dog!!! Offending dog owners are just yucky!

We get certain things free in the EU but it depends on what is provided by the government in the country you are in. Usually it's not the comprehensive, free at the point of delivery, care you get in the UK. I have had free care for a minor injury in a state hospital in France using an EH1C but received a bill for x-rays taken at the time with the bill sent to my home address in London a couple of months later. So as you say, still worth having insurance.

Charging for DNAs pops up every few years and is always dismissed as a bad idea. Better ways to ensure people attend are the text reminders and appointment confirmations etc that now exist. I don't actually see any problem with ensuring patients are entitled to NHS care via, for example, an NHS card. It is supposed to be for those paying appropriate tax, those in receipt of benefits or those from overseas who have registered to pay for their care. It's simple finance to check entitlement to care and could be done in advance of care via a patient's NHS number. But for some reason people see it as xenophobic even though the same people expect to pay for care or to pay for insurance when they travel abroad. They also fear any type of card which could be seen as data collecting despite many people leaving a very thorough ID and data trail with every social media post they make Certain emergency care is free to anyone and everyone anyway but for example, cancer care can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. We could say that anyone that comes here can have free care which is often what happens here by default as no administrator checks. Or we could say that those contributing or on benefits, are entitled to care and others are welcome but have to pay. Since most people here are entitled, it's more of a political and society mind shift than an administrative difficulty. It could be done but at the moment it is left to receptionists and other staff to randomly identify those who might need to talk to the appropriate administrator to assess entitlement or need for payment. We have to get beyond the idea that limiting entitlement to tax funded services to those appropriately contributing (or on benefits) is inherently xenophobic. If it makes financial sense then why not do what most other countries do and collect funds appropriately.

The day I was in the bank with a long queue, most people were not "old" but they still had transactions that could only be done at the counter of Barclays. You may not need to use the counter often but when you do need it, who wants to travel to one of the last remaining and therefore increasingly crowded branches just so Barclays can maintain their profits and dividends for the more wealthy in the population.

Would be interesting to know if the Barclays ATMs will also shut down in December. If they do then Savvygirl, make sure your PIN doesn't accidentally get locked as you'll be travelling a much longer way to an ATM to unlock it.

I'm very tech savvy and the only reason I go to the bank is to do one of the many things that can only be done at the counter. This was also the case for others in the queue as you can of course hear why they are there when they explain to the member of staff front of house. You're lucky you never have to go to a bank but there are many situations where it is necessary. Neither of the staff I encountered want their workplace to close and I cannot see how the number of people needing to use the counter can be accommodated in existing bank space elsewhere.

So today there are 6 people queuing for the ATMs inside, 9 people queuing for the counter, one ATM machine not working, one customer complaining that the ATM inside has not registered her deposit accurately, one person wanting to make a formal complaint and several people with mobility issues who I doubt would be able to travel to Brixton or Peckham without assistance. Not sure if Barclays are purposely making it so awful that we want to see the back of it. Personally I would like to see another front of house staff member and another on the counter.

Every time I go in to Barclays to use a service that can only be done at the counter, (because the machines don't have the capability) there is always a long queue of people also waiting for services that can only be done at the counter. The closure of the last bank in East Dulwich is an absolute scandal and, be in no doubt, is done to maximise bank profits. Many of these bank buildings remain empty for a long time as they are difficult and expensive to convert to other uses. The departing banks should be made to provide funds to regenerate the buildings they leave empty and unused.

Spare a thought for those of us whose flats are very dark and have branches tapping against our windows because the trees are only rarely pruned. There are also issues with tree roots of these young but already very large trees causing damage to water pipes and foundations. Although the plane trees are beautiful trees, I think it was a poorly thought out plan when they were originally planted. They still have a lot of growing to do and will need ongoing maintenance. I'm all for trees but the right tree in the right place is really important.

I think it's miserable for children to have to start a daily commute at such a young age when there are perfectly good schools in walking distance of home. Commuting is miserable enough as an adult but for children....well I wouldn't have liked to do it for 6 or 7 years.

I agree with Jenijenjen. I was reluctant to use the econsult service initially but, having used it, found that my issue was triaged and responded to by an appropriate person in an appropriate timescale...the next day for one issue and two weeks for a completely non urgent issue. There is the facility within the econsult to specify a particular staff member if you need to see the same person or request someone with a particular specialist interest. So I am now a convert to the econsult system. The only thing is that the time slot for a call is wide so you need to keep your phone near you for a half day.

Slightly dodgy ground suggesting religious schools instil higher values than non religious schools given the scandals exposed within various churches in recent years. People brought up in a secular education also hold good values and can appreciate the value of a belief in something. It is sad that we don't seem willing, due to cost, to just make the most of the reduction in class sizes and use the opportunity to have improved teacher pupil ratios and improve the education provided. Thirty children in a mixed ability class is still alot to cope with when some children have additional learning needs. We could embrace the falling class sizes for the teaching and learning opportunity this could offer but we would have to pay more tax so I guess we'll close schools instead
