Has anyone reported this to Southwark Environmental Health.
-
East Dulwich is a great place for kids. Also Peckham Rye is becoming much nicer, lots to do, better transport connections and slightly better prices. I would avoid living on a really busy road like EDG, plenty of houses on backstreets which will be better for families.

Weekend Construction on Dunstans Road

Do you have a party wall agreement, ours set out the working hours. In any case complain to the council as they shouldn't be working outside permitted hours. -
Specialist house insurance to cover renovations
alex_b replied to Eggybread's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Our insurer (John Lewis underwritten by RSA) continued to provide buildings cover for our place when we moved out during renovations, they also covered our contents in our temporary place for the duration. There was no extra charge for any of this. They did ask for copies of our builder's liability insurance, copy of the contract and asked some simple questions. The exclusions they put in place were as follows: "We do not provide cover for: Accidental Damage In respect to your building work the following terms will apply, whilst the work is ongoing. ? We are not providing Joint Insured status with the Contractor. ? Cover is restricted to the existing structure only. ? Loss or damage by storm is excluded whilst the property is not weatherproof. ? Loss or damage by theft, attempted theft, malicious persons or vandals is excluded unless there are signs of forcible or violent entry or exit at the property. ? Any damage caused as a result of the works is excluded. ? No cover is provided for unfixed materials The automatic policy exclusions detailed in the policy booklet, which usually come into force when the property has been unoccupied for 60 days in a row, will come into force immediately when the property becomes unoccupied due to building works ? Freezing water in fixed water or fixed heating systems ? Water escaping from washing machines, dishwashers, fixed water or fixed heating systems ? Oil escaping from a fixed heating system ? Theft & malicious damage" Our mortgage company were happy with this and so were we, the contractor's insurance would have covered most of the exclusions. -
Hop Burns and Black have opened "The Can Station" on Saturdays from 12-6pm at the Serious Pig on Blenheim Grove.

I spoke to them again tonight as I was getting intermittent connectivity and dial-up speeds. After wasting lots of time resetting equipment and blaming my computer they eventually admitted there is still a network issue that could take up to 72 hours to fix. They have credited by bill for yeaterday, today and the next three days because of the problem.

I'm still really slow (about 3 Mbps now) is everyone else back to normal?
-
Back up for me but still terribly slow (like <1Mbps) is everyone else back up to speed?
-
Down on Adys too I knew it was a network fault but they still wasted half an hour of my time having me switch things on and off and reset routers.

My neighbors park their vans that they use in the building trade on our street, we also occasionally have a burger van, ice cream van and other small commercial vehicles parked on our street. None of these are paying a special tax for the use of the road. Nor are the taxi and uber drivers who either live in our area or use our road as a waiting bay for local pickups. If the zipcar approach takes off then a) this means that sufficient residents are using this instead of owning cars/second cars reducing the numbers of cars in the area b) there will be no need for special car club bays freeing up space for general parking. The only downside is that Southwark lose some tax revenue but I think the benefits to the overall community outweigh these costs.

Obviously Zipcar are biased but they claim (http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/car-ownership-costs-london-drivers-more-than-3000-a-year-a3172511.html) a annual cost of ?3,436 which is a bit higher than other figures I've seen that place it nearer ?2,500. They also claim on average people in London use their car for 30 mins per day, I've seen similar global statistics that put average utilization for private cars at a little under an hour a day. Even at ?2500 a year, this would buy a little over an hour a day of round trip driving with zipcar or 23 minutes a day of one way driving. I think that once we're past the car seat phase we'll ditch our car and switch to car sharing (and hire cars for weekends away).

There was a thread a while back from a French au pair (http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,1810208,1810208#msg-1810208).

Southwark Plans for Camberwell Old & New Cemeteries.
alex_b replied to Penguin68's topic in The Lounge
I'm confused... Are they burying people on "a site that never had any burial at all" or are they "developing over ... 47,952" bodies. I am finding this thread strangely fascinating... -
Yes it was the bi-fold door company who we used. I would not recommend them. The doors themselves are great and now fitted correctly, but we had real issues with them. The first set of installers used a non-schuco drainage box which didn't drain, they then tried to fix it by simply gumming it up with more silicon which didn't resolve the problem. Finally the properly installed a genuine schuco drainage box and we've had no issues since. Luckily we were really delayed fitting the wooden floor so only the concrete got wet. They also cracked our roof light on two separate delivery attempts which wasn't great. On the other hand we used OM double glazing for our glass roof and the end panel (also schuco) and we couldn't be happier with their work. DM me if you want to pop by and take a look.

Advise on pram/pushchair system to fit a small boot
alex_b replied to cecyfly07's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The Bugaboo Bee is a good option. It folds pretty small but still has car seat adaptors, a cocoon for newborns and buggy board for the older kid. I only remember using the car seat adaptors for a few months but perhaps that's because we don't use our car that much. I found it much less tippy and easier to drive one handed than our McLaren, the capacity of the basket underneath is pretty good too. -
We used the travel place in Canary Wharf.

Proposed 10km new double yellow lines across Dulwich
alex_b replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
But it's a SHOULD not a MUST. It's obviously situational and my experience in Adys/Nutbrook (half of which got painted even though it wasn't in the consultation) is that it hasn't improved safety at the junction but has put a huge pressure on local parking. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
alex_b replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, the problem I have with CPZs is that in my experience they are poorly run and the inevitable outsourced provider aims at maximizing revenue rather than providing a good service to residents. In Twickenham and Windsor I experienced prolonged delays in issuing and renewing permits (leading to fines that then needed to be appealed) and expensive/cumbersome arrangements for visitor parking. I don't see any evidence that Southwark will somehow be more effective at managing this. -
Provided the Jubilee line is running properly it is still quicker to go Peckham Rye -> Canada Water/London Bridge -> Westminster/Green Park/Bond Street than going into Victoria and then onto the Victoria Line or District Line. I would really miss the choice though. I imagine for Denmark Hill and Nunhead it would mean a much bigger hit to services.

Carpet buying - any tips or tricks to save?
alex_b replied to poppet27's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We used Stephen Tozer, [email protected]. We found some carpet we liked from John Lewis and he did a great detective job to track down the manufacture and get us a much better price. He'll also fit carpet you source yourself although he seemed to be able to get it cheaper than we could. -
Hello! Primary school help please!
alex_b replied to JacquiAnnabelle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
For Shoreditch you might want to move to the Peckham Rye side of East Dulwich. It also has the benefit of being a bit cheaper, although it's been changing a lot in the last three years and both Bellenden Rd and the lower part of Rye Lane are getting much nicer. We're in Adys Rd which is a 10-15 minute walk to Peckham Rye station and then 20-ish minutes on the Overground to Shoreditch High St. Plenty of people in East and West Dulwich take the Southern trains one or two stops to Peckham Rye and then change to the Overground train there. The connections are on the same platform and timed 2-3 minutes apart which is good, but it is one more thing to go wrong especially with the strikes on Southern. Schools wise on this side of ED Belham is a small free school and will be moving into its permanent home in September. I believe Bellenden is also getting a new school building in the next year. I'd be interested in hearing from other parents about these schools as our son is just turning three so we don't have direct experience yet. -
That said a flat next had three offers on the first day and went for a good deal more than the asking price.

Shopping robot spotted on Lordship Lane
alex_b replied to Carrie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A lot of the posters on this thread are the type of people who demanded that cars had a bloke with a red flag walking in front of them. Why be so negative all of the time, sure they'll have teething trouble and won't be suitable for all purposes but focussing on the problems is just ridiculous. For instance the concern about traffic accidents, how many accidents occur at the moment due to delivery vans stopping in the middle of the road with their hazards on and cars trying to squeeze past or due to an inattentive driver at the end of a 12hr shift without breaks? Yes these things might cause new problems but they could also significantly reduce current problems.
