  1. I'm still really slow (about 3 Mbps now) is everyone else back to normal?
  2. Back up for me but still terribly slow (like <1Mbps) is everyone else back up to speed?
  3. Down on Adys too I knew it was a network fault but they still wasted half an hour of my time having me switch things on and off and reset routers.

My neighbors park their vans that they use in the building trade on our street, we also occasionally have a burger van, ice cream van and other small commercial vehicles parked on our street. None of these are paying a special tax for the use of the road. Nor are the taxi and uber drivers who either live in our area or use our road as a waiting bay for local pickups. If the zipcar approach takes off then a) this means that sufficient residents are using this instead of owning cars/second cars reducing the numbers of cars in the area b) there will be no need for special car club bays freeing up space for general parking. The only downside is that Southwark lose some tax revenue but I think the benefits to the overall community outweigh these costs.
  5. Obviously Zipcar are biased but they claim (http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/car-ownership-costs-london-drivers-more-than-3000-a-year-a3172511.html) a annual cost of ?3,436 which is a bit higher than other figures I've seen that place it nearer ?2,500. They also claim on average people in London use their car for 30 mins per day, I've seen similar global statistics that put average utilization for private cars at a little under an hour a day. Even at ?2500 a year, this would buy a little over an hour a day of round trip driving with zipcar or 23 minutes a day of one way driving. I think that once we're past the car seat phase we'll ditch our car and switch to car sharing (and hire cars for weekends away).
  6. There was a thread a while back from a French au pair (http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,1810208,1810208#msg-1810208).
  7. I'm confused... Are they burying people on "a site that never had any burial at all" or are they "developing over ... 47,952" bodies. I am finding this thread strangely fascinating...
  8. Yes it was the bi-fold door company who we used. I would not recommend them. The doors themselves are great and now fitted correctly, but we had real issues with them. The first set of installers used a non-schuco drainage box which didn't drain, they then tried to fix it by simply gumming it up with more silicon which didn't resolve the problem. Finally the properly installed a genuine schuco drainage box and we've had no issues since. Luckily we were really delayed fitting the wooden floor so only the concrete got wet. They also cracked our roof light on two separate delivery attempts which wasn't great. On the other hand we used OM double glazing for our glass roof and the end panel (also schuco) and we couldn't be happier with their work. DM me if you want to pop by and take a look.
  9. The Bugaboo Bee is a good option. It folds pretty small but still has car seat adaptors, a cocoon for newborns and buggy board for the older kid. I only remember using the car seat adaptors for a few months but perhaps that's because we don't use our car that much. I found it much less tippy and easier to drive one handed than our McLaren, the capacity of the basket underneath is pretty good too.
  10. We used the travel place in Canary Wharf.
  11. Depending on your location in Dulwich and your final destination in London, then the overground at Peckham Rye can be quicker because of the padding of train times into LB in the morning.
  12. But it's a SHOULD not a MUST. It's obviously situational and my experience in Adys/Nutbrook (half of which got painted even though it wasn't in the consultation) is that it hasn't improved safety at the junction but has put a huge pressure on local parking.
  13. James, the problem I have with CPZs is that in my experience they are poorly run and the inevitable outsourced provider aims at maximizing revenue rather than providing a good service to residents. In Twickenham and Windsor I experienced prolonged delays in issuing and renewing permits (leading to fines that then needed to be appealed) and expensive/cumbersome arrangements for visitor parking. I don't see any evidence that Southwark will somehow be more effective at managing this.
  14. Provided the Jubilee line is running properly it is still quicker to go Peckham Rye -> Canada Water/London Bridge -> Westminster/Green Park/Bond Street than going into Victoria and then onto the Victoria Line or District Line. I would really miss the choice though. I imagine for Denmark Hill and Nunhead it would mean a much bigger hit to services.
  15. We have schucco bifolds which look great and work really well. The people who fitted them were complete idiots though and screwed up the drainage on the first two attempts! Is there a reason to go for sliding rather than folding or French doors?
  16. We used Stephen Tozer, stephentozer@outlook.com. We found some carpet we liked from John Lewis and he did a great detective job to track down the manufacture and get us a much better price. He'll also fit carpet you source yourself although he seemed to be able to get it cheaper than we could.
  17. For Shoreditch you might want to move to the Peckham Rye side of East Dulwich. It also has the benefit of being a bit cheaper, although it's been changing a lot in the last three years and both Bellenden Rd and the lower part of Rye Lane are getting much nicer. We're in Adys Rd which is a 10-15 minute walk to Peckham Rye station and then 20-ish minutes on the Overground to Shoreditch High St. Plenty of people in East and West Dulwich take the Southern trains one or two stops to Peckham Rye and then change to the Overground train there. The connections are on the same platform and timed 2-3 minutes apart which is good, but it is one more thing to go wrong especially with the strikes on Southern. Schools wise on this side of ED Belham is a small free school and will be moving into its permanent home in September. I believe Bellenden is also getting a new school building in the next year. I'd be interested in hearing from other parents about these schools as our son is just turning three so we don't have direct experience yet.
  18. That said a flat next had three offers on the first day and went for a good deal more than the asking price.
  19. A lot of the posters on this thread are the type of people who demanded that cars had a bloke with a red flag walking in front of them. Why be so negative all of the time, sure they'll have teething trouble and won't be suitable for all purposes but focussing on the problems is just ridiculous. For instance the concern about traffic accidents, how many accidents occur at the moment due to delivery vans stopping in the middle of the road with their hazards on and cars trying to squeeze past or due to an inattentive driver at the end of a 12hr shift without breaks? Yes these things might cause new problems but they could also significantly reduce current problems.

I saw this in Peckham Rye Park on Saturday morning. A terrified toddler (with some food) being chased around by a large-ish dog that was off lead and not under the owner's control. Eventually the owner ambled over and took control of her dog and seemed quite apologetic, but it could easily have wound up with an injured child. I don't see why parents should be constrained to concrete playgrounds if we want to avoid our children being chased or covered in dog mess.
  21. Snappy Snaps on Rye Lane is who I have used before for our toddler. They'll do the right size for foreign passports/visa too which is handy.
  22. Snappy Snaps on Rye Lane is good.

    Megaflow system

We had a megaflow fitted as part of our loft conversion (1 bath and 2 shower rooms) we find it really good and it allows us to run multiple showers at once in the morning. The other benefit with a cylinder is that we have an immersion backup so we still have hot water if the boiler dies for any reason. My experience with combis is that although they theoretically can deliver the volume of hot water required, they are very dependent on incoming pressure and flow and often don't deliver on the promise.
  24. I agree with first mate that the dog poo on pavements is a far greater irritant (especially with a pushchair on narrow pavements) than in the parks. It's strange that the council seem so disinterested in policing that and other existing rules.
  25. Having an out of date address on a drivers licence carries a ?1000 penalty, so it's a good idea to get it updated. However, the guys checking paperwork at the RRC seem to only be interested in checking you have a Southwark postcode and always seem very reasonable.
