Proposed 10km new double yellow lines across Dulwich
alex_b replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
But it's a SHOULD not a MUST. It's obviously situational and my experience in Adys/Nutbrook (half of which got painted even though it wasn't in the consultation) is that it hasn't improved safety at the junction but has put a huge pressure on local parking. -
former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
alex_b replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, the problem I have with CPZs is that in my experience they are poorly run and the inevitable outsourced provider aims at maximizing revenue rather than providing a good service to residents. In Twickenham and Windsor I experienced prolonged delays in issuing and renewing permits (leading to fines that then needed to be appealed) and expensive/cumbersome arrangements for visitor parking. I don't see any evidence that Southwark will somehow be more effective at managing this. -
Provided the Jubilee line is running properly it is still quicker to go Peckham Rye -> Canada Water/London Bridge -> Westminster/Green Park/Bond Street than going into Victoria and then onto the Victoria Line or District Line. I would really miss the choice though. I imagine for Denmark Hill and Nunhead it would mean a much bigger hit to services.

Carpet buying - any tips or tricks to save?
alex_b replied to poppet27's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We used Stephen Tozer, [email protected]. We found some carpet we liked from John Lewis and he did a great detective job to track down the manufacture and get us a much better price. He'll also fit carpet you source yourself although he seemed to be able to get it cheaper than we could. -
Hello! Primary school help please!
alex_b replied to JacquiAnnabelle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
For Shoreditch you might want to move to the Peckham Rye side of East Dulwich. It also has the benefit of being a bit cheaper, although it's been changing a lot in the last three years and both Bellenden Rd and the lower part of Rye Lane are getting much nicer. We're in Adys Rd which is a 10-15 minute walk to Peckham Rye station and then 20-ish minutes on the Overground to Shoreditch High St. Plenty of people in East and West Dulwich take the Southern trains one or two stops to Peckham Rye and then change to the Overground train there. The connections are on the same platform and timed 2-3 minutes apart which is good, but it is one more thing to go wrong especially with the strikes on Southern. Schools wise on this side of ED Belham is a small free school and will be moving into its permanent home in September. I believe Bellenden is also getting a new school building in the next year. I'd be interested in hearing from other parents about these schools as our son is just turning three so we don't have direct experience yet. -
That said a flat next had three offers on the first day and went for a good deal more than the asking price.

Shopping robot spotted on Lordship Lane
alex_b replied to Carrie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
A lot of the posters on this thread are the type of people who demanded that cars had a bloke with a red flag walking in front of them. Why be so negative all of the time, sure they'll have teething trouble and won't be suitable for all purposes but focussing on the problems is just ridiculous. For instance the concern about traffic accidents, how many accidents occur at the moment due to delivery vans stopping in the middle of the road with their hazards on and cars trying to squeeze past or due to an inattentive driver at the end of a 12hr shift without breaks? Yes these things might cause new problems but they could also significantly reduce current problems. -

I saw this in Peckham Rye Park on Saturday morning. A terrified toddler (with some food) being chased around by a large-ish dog that was off lead and not under the owner's control. Eventually the owner ambled over and took control of her dog and seemed quite apologetic, but it could easily have wound up with an injured child. I don't see why parents should be constrained to concrete playgrounds if we want to avoid our children being chased or covered in dog mess.

best place to get passport photos for children

Snappy Snaps on Rye Lane is who I have used before for our toddler. They'll do the right size for foreign passports/visa too which is handy. -

Snappy Snaps on Rye Lane is good. -
We had a megaflow fitted as part of our loft conversion (1 bath and 2 shower rooms) we find it really good and it allows us to run multiple showers at once in the morning. The other benefit with a cylinder is that we have an immersion backup so we still have hot water if the boiler dies for any reason. My experience with combis is that although they theoretically can deliver the volume of hot water required, they are very dependent on incoming pressure and flow and often don't deliver on the promise.

I agree with first mate that the dog poo on pavements is a far greater irritant (especially with a pushchair on narrow pavements) than in the parks. It's strange that the council seem so disinterested in policing that and other existing rules.

Van Bookings at the Reuse and Recyling Centre
alex_b replied to fredatkinson's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Having an out of date address on a drivers licence carries a ?1000 penalty, so it's a good idea to get it updated. However, the guys checking paperwork at the RRC seem to only be interested in checking you have a Southwark postcode and always seem very reasonable. -
Snappy snaps on Rye Lane were really good with my son when he was that little.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

Thanks for trying James. It's really not a great website and has followed the general UK.gov approach of making very basic information easier to find and ensuring detailed information is impossible to access. -

James. There is a thread (http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,1809847) on the dangerous state of the toddler play structure in Goose Green playground. Could you raise this with officers please? Also what is going on with the council's website, the new 'stylish' design makes it almost impossible to find useful information if it isn't in the top five things the website designer thought I'd want to look for. For instance, I cannot for the life of me find a contact email (or webform) for the parks team to report the damaged play equipment. -
Any one with an eye for lighting/design - stuck for ideas...

We have three simple pendants from Urban Cottage Industries (http://www.urbancottageindustries.com/made-for-you/simple-pendant-lights) with big squirrel cage bulbs in them. They're each of slightly different lengths so they spiral down towards the table. Simple and really effective. -

It opened this week (card only and limited menu) and signs said a larger breakfast/lunch/dinner menu coming soon. I had a pastry and coffee this morning and it was really good. It only has bar stools/counters so probably wont be taking custom from Andersons & co but a great takeaway option.

For negatives I could never find a cost effective option for sending them out. I bought a Epson v500 negative scanner and although it's really really time consuming it is very effective. It has IR scratch and dust removal that seems to work pretty well. I have a little air puffer to clean the negatives before I scan them and a light box to weed out the out of focus photos of hedges and flowers that my gran used to take to use up a roll! I've done about 3000 35mm and medium format negatives (20+ years of family photos) and it was a year long project. I still have a thousand 110s/16mm to do which is a project for this year.

I think it depends where in ED you are. I'm near Goose Green and walk up to Peckham Rye. I can reliably do my front door to my office (in Marylebone) in 50 minutes which I don't find bad at all. Likewise I can get to the wharf in a little over 30 mins which is pretty good although the Jubilee line is crowded at Canada Water in the mornings. On weekends we mainly use buses (principally the 176) to get into town as they're more convenient than lugging a toddler up and down station stairs. If you're looking for other areas with decent-ish connections into the city or the wharf, the Forrest Hill or Crystal Palace are options and both have nice spots on their high streets. Otherwise you'll be paying the high prices of SW London and potentially putting up with Waterloo which has its own share of problems.

At that age we used a moba wrap, we moved onto a Tula with an infant insert when he was 6 months or so. I loved the Moba and thought out son felt really snug and secure in it. My wife never got the hang of it though.

It might be a little bit too old for her, but have you looked at the micro:bit (http://microbit.org/about/)? Cheap and mac compatible.
