  1. If it's from Berkshire Hunt wouldn't that make them a bark?;-)
  2. Thanks for the information Heath - always good to have a reminder to keep an eye out. Talk to your neighbours!
  3. They need to love words
  4. Saw the German film "The Lives of Others" the other night. Superb. Bleak, upsetting, poetic and cleverly subtle. About human strength - I love the way you slowly get the message that the Stasi officer is acually having a change of conscience.
  5. Good work, Mark. Can I badger you about this, in a low-key, non-urgent manner, of course.
  6. ...in a table that has Newcastle as the 19th best in Europe when they are not much better than 19th in the premiership! But then, look at chelsea down at no 24.;-)
  7. 29. My Rupert and Ophelia had to play in a park in which the dogs were not only unmuzzled but also off the leash. Edited because blooming BB can type (and think) much faster than me.
  8. Just something mellow for a Sunday evening - used to listen to a lot of Ted back in the 80s and 90s. Ted Hawkins - Green Eyed Girl
  9. Because the lights don't go red immediately - human nature!
  10. I think Ani is referring to The Lane cafe on LL - the one that's just been refurbed, The Drum is on NCR, - sort it out, PGC;-)

    Alcohol

The type of drinking people on here seem to be talking about is the beautifully poetic type of getting giggly-sloshed over an evening and ending up cuddling someone you shouldn't or whispering drink-witticisms into the night. It might be long-term health dangerous for that individual but it is jolly good fun all the same. Much more worrying is the type of drinking that gets people raging for a fight. I don't care if mellow people get quietly drunk but I do care that angry knobs get aggressive pissed. grrr..
  13. Dear jctg, So sorry to hear about your accident - hope you are on the mend and that you have no permanent damage. Best wishes. citizen
  14. *careful Kel, i've been sitting here in the dark for a week now all on my own* *enjoying the silence that is the Quiet Rooom* *supping a beer or two (jeysus, are those really all my bottles?)* *Just watch out for the "cultures" in the corners* *if you listen carefully you can hear the muffled sounds of the Forum up above.....* *still, if you must, open a blind or two* *then come and have a drink*
  15. Loz, you suggest my last post is a bit of skewed logic, and I guess it might be construed as such only that we are talking about emotional human beings here, not logical machines. The Highway code makes mention of vulnerable people like the old, disabled and young. These poeple may not cross the road using the higher powers of logic that you demand. It still stands that the onus is on the driver to be careful. Some of the posts on here suggest that it is the driver's right to drive in an unimpeded manner. Maybe - but it is also the drivers responsibility to drive with due care and attention, even if the pedestrian is acting illogically.
  16. I am all for everyone paying attention and being polite as they go about their business on the streets but the key thing here is outcome. Drivers can hurt, injure or kill a pedestrian who steps out in front of them. A driver will not be hurt, injured or killed if they hit a pedestrian. The onus is on drivers to be careful.
  17. These sections of the highway code seem to suggest a modicom of care is expected from drivers in regard of pedestrians. 204 The most vulnerable road users are pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders. It is particularly important to be aware of children, older and disabled people, and learner and inexperienced drivers and riders. Pedestrians 205 There is a risk of pedestrians, especially children, stepping unexpectedly into the road. You should drive with the safety of children in mind at a speed suitable for the conditions. 206 Drive carefully and slowly when in crowded shopping streets, Home Zones and Quiet Lanes (see Rule 218) or residential areas driving past bus and tram stops; pedestrians may emerge suddenly into the road passing parked vehicles, especially ice cream vans; children are more interested in ice cream than traffic and may run into the road unexpectedly needing to cross a pavement or cycle track; for example, to reach or leave a driveway. Give way to pedestrians and cyclists on the pavement reversing into a side road; look all around the vehicle and give way to any pedestrians who may be crossing the road turning at road junctions; give way to pedestrians who are already crossing the road into which you are turning the pavement is closed due to street repairs and pedestrians are directed to use the road approaching pedestrians on narrow rural roads without a footway or footpath. Always slow down and be prepared to stop if necessary, giving them plenty of room as you drive past I suggest you drive with patience and care. Give way to pedestrians!
