  1. I dont think they need tv's-they need decent libraries and a caring adult ( hopefully the same one most of the time) at home out of school hours. Sorry thats not very pc, but im my limited expereince children have a tv to keep them quiet/out of adults way, but not a single book in the house.
  2. i thought most schools have a pta second hand clothes cupboard? i have always given my outgrown stuff to them- and acquired sometimes too.
  3. i think the deadline is the give away- i dont think they ever expected you to say yes.
  4. aha! Thanks for POI. I wondered why Jay Rayner was on the train already when i got on at Farringdon.
  5. does anyone remember pans people's dance routine to Lonely Boy? awesome.
  6. i think crystal palace farm is well gone- now a horticutural college. there is a great maze there. brockwell park 1 o'clock club??
  7. in my experience, some people have to have another half, always. They line up the next one, to try and make sure there are right, before dumping the current one. One of my best freinds did this with the 4 men she married/ lived with. Every single time she met the other one, decided if he was better than the current model, and then dumped the old one. Some people aren't so dependent on having to have another half. My brother is the former- when he told me he was moving out to " have some time to himself" I said" so who is she?" he was pretty shocked ( It was the next door neighbour). Just depends.
  8. surely all those Guardian journalists that get off the train at Farringdon must big this up???
  9. if you ever watch location location it is a good way to see how people can offer. if you are in a good position - chain free, mortgage available, then yes try 10% off. but i know a house very close to me which is on at 20% more than its worth, so really you have to do your research. Some vendors are greedy and will fly a kite to begin with to see if they get an uninformed purchaser. at the end of the day ,if you are applying for a mortgage then the valuer will probabaly pick up if its overpriced. but scrutanise the land registry sale prices- mouseprices web site etc. Good luck.
  10. its called Streatham and Marlborough cricket club
  11. i saw a lovelyhouse where the walls were white and then there were lots of picture frames painted on the walls so the little girl and friends could all put paintings in the "frames", but she told me they had stuck pictures in the frames to begin with.
  12. A jam kettle is a huge pan for making jam in- but might also contain a lot of chocolate and crisps ;)
  13. i would welcome any ones ideas on where to hide food in your house that a teenager will not find. if i buy anything nice they seek it out like heat detecting missiles. even in the shoe cleaning box or the jam kettle. any one with better ideas??
  14. we have have to drink it all undiluted then - to be on the safe side..
  15. i think it is the shortest posiible walking route, but rememeber that proirity goes to siblings and other needy groups. 3 years ago we were too far away at 1.5 km. however I notice children walk past my house every day who fall into the other 2 categories.
  16. of course you can always look it up in a book if you are over a certain age...
  17. i just need to point out that Charter got 66% grade A * to C inc English and Maths compared to 82.07% at Graveney. Charter is not really East Dulwich, more Dulwich Village, and your friend would have to be careful that she was close enough to the school. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Charter, but its results are not as good as Graveney- partly because some of its intake is selective. I only mentioned Graveney because you stressed that your friends children were academic.
  18. if you include english, maths, science and a modern langauge (all the things an acadmeic would rate), then charter will fall behind graveney. The charter is very good at getting everyone up on the number of gcse's but it is different gcse's for differnt people, where as graveney still push the more academic subjects- imo.
  19. Graveney is a far more academic school than charter. Not better necessariy but far better results.
  20. i'll join you at the end of the day if you cant find any morning people- although i am at the jog so you can still speak school...
  21. the hippies came to the isles of scillies in the mid to late sixties- it was SO exciting- i was a child at the time- it was like an alien invasion- they had long hair and ate the flowers, played guiars and harmonicas and slept on the beach- they only stayed a week i think , but it was SO exciting if you lived on the isles of scillies!!I rememeber we went to look at them - but did not get too close- it was like goign to see a beached up whale or similar- best to to get too close or engage in converation unless they spoke to you first.
  22. i would steer them more to getting onto the very tight Graveney area.
  23. you could leaflet your road with similar size / style houses.
  24. i think its the before 7am thats the killer .my body is not ready for any exercise that early in the day...is the park open then anyway??
  25. of course any bucket would do,who has got room for all this paraphenalia? i found a washing up bowl was better for the first few weeks as the babys head/neck is so weak.
