I miss Woolworths in Peckham too and the one in Camberwell, which is now a Peacocks. Also miss C&A which I'm sure was somewhere there on two floors, before Woolworths e.g. where Woolworths used to be?

Try Sunray Gardens just across the road in Southwark! They've been open today with lots of people around, even though some of the big trees were swaying badly at 7am this morning! Thanks for alerting us to Ruskin Park (very big but now the one o'clock has been closed for 2 years not much else) and Hornimans (was going to take mindees there tomorrow).

Agree with you Poppet. I also wandered up to LL around a year ago with my two teenage girls and was appalled at the lack of basic "please" and "thank yous" even though me and my girls said it when we had just bought something etc. etc. My girls asked me not to embarrass them but embarrass them I did! I've taught them the basic please and thank yous but every shop was the same with total lack of interest and communication.

Did you have a great 2nd or subsequent birth?
minder replied to reren's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Also, after being worried about another early birth as first was born 4 weeks early, second child was born on her due date and two and a half hours after first contraction. Third child was born a week early and another quick delivery. -
Did you have a great 2nd or subsequent birth?
minder replied to reren's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My third child (now 15) was born "within the caul" (as I was told at the time) and it was amazing to see. She was a lot harder to push out (midwife had to break the membranes halfway) than my first two births but was also born within a few hours of labour like my first two births. I was standing up, as had been at my second child's birth (hanging round husband's neck) and after having my first baby totally unprepared and 4 weeks early. He was born a few hours after my waters broke and I was strapped down to a monitor in King's. Not a pleasant experience and remember nearly passing out a few times with gasping too much gas and air! If my Mum, sister and husband had not been there I don't know how I would have got through it! Best wishes. -
Over in North Dulwich and there's a lot of attempted and actual burglaries going on during the day and night. Latest one a few weeks ago and the police don't seem to be doing much and are out of touch with what is going on in each area over the past couple of years.

We get these loud and crazy sound effects every Saturday and Sunday morning around 6am when there isn't any traffic! Shame they're not around during the day/afternoon when there's so many burglaries taking place in the area.

I would keep your 20 month old in the pushchair, even if they are screaming. A trike or scooter would be out of the question for me. Safety comes first.

Where to "hang around" during half term
minder replied to Monkey's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The Carnegie Library in Herne Hill Road have an arts and crafts session at 2pm next Wednesday 30th Oct. Sure it would be good for your 4 year old. -
What are the chances of reinstating a toddler nap!?
minder replied to jennyh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You might have to face the fact that at nearly 3 your daughter might not need a nap during the day. Try giving your daughter the bottle of milk after lunch if you feel it would affect her appetite but bring her lunchtime forward. She might manage a 'power nap' until the evening when the bottle of milk becomes the sleep association again. Every child is different but my three children all had a bottle of milk at night. My eldest (now 21) was the worst and had to have a bottle of it (and tea) until he was nearly 4. Still have photos of it hanging out of his mouth! All three have never had a filling by the way. -
So how are your little ones getting on at Reception?
minder replied to Otta's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Saffron, I'm also not sure about reception teachers giving homework, other than a book to take home to look at but they have to look at every individual child. The only legal requirement for reception teachers is to complete the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP) on each individual child at age 5. Give the teachers time to get to know the children and they usually have a parents evening soon. Under the EYFS and from Sept. 12, childminders and nurseries have to do a developmental check on a child age 2, so I can understand why schools have to keep an eye on things at age 4 otherwise Ofsted wouldn't be able to grade them accordingly. -
I think you and Loz did that successfully!

Idiots ignoring lights at East Dulwich station.
minder replied to malcolmchurch's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Kidkruger, the light was on green for pedestrians to cross. The bus stopped as the lights were red for oncoming traffic. I can't see how any driver would overtake a bus at these lights but I've experienced it myself so can understand. This was a pedestrian crossing with lights and everything. Imagine if it were a child going by the green man? What would happen then? This sort of thing happens everyday at normal zebra crossings. Only last week at 8.30am it took two attempts at me trying to cross at a normal zebra crossing in Red Post Hill before I went out into the road with hands up! This was with a double buggy! Driver was half asleep and didn't seem to know what was going on! -
When my daughter got her GCSE results The Charter were excellent in their communication and helped me to encourage her to pick Science as an A Level. She had the A star in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Daughter chose to go with History, Geography, Psychology and Biology to study at A Level. I respected her choice and she's happy with what she's doing now (a choice between Geography and Psychology) but she's already looking at Geography at university so you never know what happens! There may be million pound houses directly opposite the school but a 5 minute walk away on the Sunray Estate there are still over 100 Southwark Council properties and then a short walk away you have the Denmark Hill Estate.

Bawdy-nan, I think you're right about how you arrive at a point (whether a girl or boy) and think, hey, science just isn't for you. My now 17 year old girl achieved 9 A stars and 4 A's in her GCSEs at The Charter last year. This included A star Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Daughter wasn't really mathsy but still got an A. She also got an A star in Geography and since then this has been her favourite subject. ICT is something she's more able in than myself (as are most teenagers) other than me on the EDF! Mum and Dad both attended the local state comps (Kingsdale and William Penn, original site of The Charter in the middle/late 70s). Her older brother did just as well at The Charter (now in final year at King's) and youngest in Year 10 just the same. No extra tuition involved by the way!

East2 - just get your husband to take your 17 month old to the pool with him to have a splasharound as this will get your ds used to anything more formal.

nurseries near North Dulwich train stn
minder replied to newto Dulwich's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The German Kindergarten moved to Railton Road sometime over the summer. The Half Moon is very popular but might be a bit late now to get a space for Jan? Mustard Seed are quite selective in their intake, especially if you're just moving into the area. -
It would be good practice to record and let parents know of any bumps/accidents. What's ppl?

I agree with you uncleglen. The last time I went to the cinema with my youngest (nearly 15) I came away with a feeling that the adverts had more of an effect on me (i.e. worrying about drinking and betting adverts) rather than the film and that was a year or so ago! My three now only go to the cinema with their friends and who knows what they are watching in the breaks?

attentionseeker ALL nurseries/childminders are governed by Ofsted and can't operate unless given their URN (Unique Reference Number). If you have this then you can go online to the Ofsted website and get a feel for what's on offer. As a childminder, Southwark will only include you on their list if you have a vacancy, so not all Southwark childminders are included. If your baby/toddler is happy with a childminder then I would say keep them there until ready to start reception class.

I think the NCT group still meet on Friday mornings at St Faith's Church, which is a 10 minute walk from Dulwich Village. The Tuesday morning toddler group in St Barnabas closed last December but there has been a Boppin Tots class running there since April. It's 45 minutes of music, props, bubbles, etc. starting at 10.30am for babies/toddlers/young children. Fi is the lady that runs the class and she's very good. Fi is back in September.

EAST DULWICH FORUM APP - how long can we wait?
minder replied to hernehillisabel's topic in The Lounge
Not everybody uses an Iphone and not everybody knows what an app is? I read your post as EDF app which meant an appointment so I would have to disagree. -
Looks like a general spider to me but how big was it?

Hi Mlteenie - I think you summed it up in your sentence beginning "The lads are a civilised bunch". I worry about my boy and girls every time they go out but hope I've taught them the right thing.

Catchment area Woodwarde Road / Beauval Road
minder replied to Simonel100's topic in The Family Room Discussion
You will be bang in the middle for the catchment area for good (primary) schools. I'm sure you have an idea but Dulwich Village Infants, Dulwich Hamlets, Heber and Goodrich schools are nearby. Not sure about nearby nurseries but I'm sure you'll get some help on here.
